1 The oracle which Habakkuk the prophet received in vision.	1 Oracolo ricevuto in visione dal profeta Abacuc.
2 How long, O LORD? I cry for help but you do not listen! I cry out to you, "Violence!" but you do not intervene.	2 Fino a quando, Signore, implorerò aiuto e non ascolti, a te alzerò il grido: «Violenza!» e non salvi?
3 Why do you let me see ruin; why must I look at misery? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and clamorous discord.	3 Perché mi fai vedere l’iniquità e resti spettatore dell’oppressione? Ho davanti a me rapina e violenza e ci sono liti e si muovono contese.
4 This is why the law is benumbed, and judgment is never rendered: Because the wicked circumvent the just; this is why judgment comes forth perverted.	4 Non ha più forza la legge né mai si afferma il diritto. Il malvagio infatti raggira il giusto e il diritto ne esce stravolto.
5 Look over the nations and see, and be utterly amazed! For a work is being done in your days that you would not have believed, were it told.	5 «Guardate fra le nazioni e osservate, resterete stupiti e sbalorditi: c’è chi compirà ai vostri giorni una cosa che a raccontarla non sarebbe creduta.
6 For see, I am raising up Chaldea, that bitter and unruly people, That marches the breadth of the land to take dwellings not his own.	6 Ecco, io faccio sorgere i Caldei, popolo feroce e impetuoso, che percorre ampie regioni per occupare dimore non sue.
7 Terrible and dreadful is he, from himself derive his law and his majesty.	7 È feroce e terribile, da lui sgorgano il suo diritto e la sua grandezza.
8 Swifter than leopards are his horses, and keener than wolves at evening. His horses prance, his horsemen come from afar: They fly like the eagle hastening to devour;	8 Più veloci dei leopardi sono i suoi cavalli, più agili dei lupi di sera. Balzano i suoi cavalieri, sono venuti da lontano, volano come aquila che piomba per divorare.
9 each comes for the rapine, Their combined onset is that of a stormwind that heaps up captives like sand.	9 Tutti, il volto teso in avanti, avanzano per conquistare. E con violenza ammassano i prigionieri come la sabbia.
10 He scoffs at kings, and princes are his laughingstock; He laughs at any fortress, heaps up a ramp, and conquers it.	10 Si fa beffe dei re, e dei capi se ne ride; si fa gioco di ogni fortezza: l’assedia e la conquista.
11 Then he veers like the wind and is gone-- this culprit who makes his own strength his god!	11 Poi muta corso come il vento e passa oltre: si fa un dio della propria forza!».
12 Are you not from eternity, O LORD, my holy God, immortal? O LORD you have marked him for judgment, O Rock , you have readied him for punishment!	12 Non sei tu fin da principio, Signore, il mio Dio, il mio Santo? Noi non moriremo! Signore, tu lo hai scelto per far giustizia, l’hai reso forte, o Roccia, per punire.
13 Too pure are your eyes to look upon evil, and the sight of misery you cannot endure. Why, then, do you gaze on the faithless in silence while the wicked man devours one more just than himself?	13 Tu dagli occhi così puri che non puoi vedere il male e non puoi guardare l’oppressione, perché, vedendo i perfidi, taci, mentre il malvagio ingoia chi è più giusto di lui?
14 You have made man like the fish of the sea, like creeping things without a ruler.	14 Tu tratti gli uomini come pesci del mare, come animali che strisciano e non hanno padrone.
15 He brings them all up with his hook, he hauls them away with his net, He gathers them in his seine; and so he rejoices and exults.	15 Egli li prende tutti all’amo, li pesca a strascico, li raccoglie nella rete, e contento ne gode.
16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net, and burns incense to his seine; For thanks to them his portion is generous, and his repast sumptuous.	16 Perciò offre sacrifici alle sue sciàbiche e brucia incenso alle sue reti, perché, grazie a loro, la sua parte è abbondante e il suo cibo succulento.
17 Shall he, then, keep on brandishing his sword to slay peoples without mercy?	17 Continuerà dunque a sguainare la spada e a massacrare le nazioni senza pietà?
