1 Now the Reubenites and Gadites had a very large number of livestock. Noticing that the land of Jazer and of Gilead was grazing country,	1 Les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad avaient de grands troupeaux, très importants. Or ils virent quele pays de Yazèr et le pays de Galaad étaient une région propice à l'élevage.
2 they came to Moses and the priest Eleazar and to the princes of the community and said,	2 Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben vinrent donc trouver Moïse, Eléazar le prêtre et les princes dela communauté, et leur dirent:
3 "The region of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Baal-meon,	3 "Atarot, Dibôn, Yazèr, Nimra, Heshbôn, Eléalé, Sebam, Nebo et Meôn,
4 which the LORD has laid low before the community of Israel, is grazing country. Now, since your servants have livestock,"	4 ce pays que Yahvé a conquis devant la communauté d'Israël, ce pays est propice à l'élevage, ettes serviteurs élèvent du bétail."
5 they continued, "if we find favor with you, let this land be given to your servants as their property. Do not make us cross the Jordan."	5 Ils dirent: "Si nous avons trouvé grâce à tes yeux, que ce pays soit donné en propriété à tesserviteurs; ne nous fais pas passer le Jourdain."
6 But Moses answered the Gadites and Reubenites: "Are your kinsmen, then, to engage in war, while you remain here?	6 Moïse répondit aux fils de Gad et aux fils de Ruben: "Vos frères iraient au combat et vousresteriez ici?
7 Why do you wish to discourage the Israelites from crossing to the land the LORD has given them?	7 Pourquoi découragez-vous les Israélites de passer dans le pays que Yahvé leur a donné?
8 That is just what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to reconnoiter the land.	8 Ainsi firent vos pères quand je les envoyai de Cadès-Barné voir le pays.
9 They went up to the Wadi Eshcol and reconnoitered the land, then so discouraged the Israelites that they would not enter the land the LORD had given them.	9 Ils montèrent jusqu'au val d'Eshkol, ils virent le pays, puis ils découragèrent les Israélites, desorte qu'ils n'allèrent pas au pays que Yahvé leur avait donné.
10 At that time the wrath of the LORD flared up, and he swore,	10 Aussi la colère de Yahvé s'enflamma-t-elle ce jour-là, et il fit ce serment:
11 'Because they have not followed me unreservedly, none of these men of twenty years or more who have come up from Egypt shall ever see this country I promised under oath to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob,	11 Si jamais ces hommes, qui sont sortis d'Egypte et qui ont l'âge de vingt ans au moins, voient lepays que j'ai promis par serment à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob..., car ils ne m'ont pas suivi sans défaillance,
12 except the Kenizzite Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun, who have followed the LORD unreservedly.'	12 sauf Caleb, fils de Yephunné le Qenizzite, et Josué, fils de Nûn: eux certes ont suivi Yahvé sansdéfaillance!
13 So in his anger with the Israelites the LORD made them wander in the desert forty years, until the whole generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD had died out.	13 La colère de Yahvé s'enflamma contre Israël et il les fit errer 40 ans dans le désert, jusqu'à ceque disparût tout entière cette génération qui avait fait ce qui déplaît à Yahvé.
14 And now here you are, a brood of sinners, rising up in your fathers' place to add still more to the LORD'S blazing wrath against the Israelites.	14 Et voici que vous vous levez à la place de vos pères comme le surgeon d'une souche depécheurs, pour attiser encore l'ardeur de la colère de Yahvé contre Israël!
15 If you turn away from following him, he will make them stay still longer in the desert, and so you will bring about the ruin of this whole nation."	15 Si vous vous détournez de lui, il fera durer encore le séjour au désert, et vous aurez causé laperte de tout ce peuple."
16 But they were insistent with him: "We wish only to build sheepfolds here for our flocks, and towns for our families;	16 Ils s'approchèrent de Moïse et lui dirent: "Nous voudrions construire ici des parcs à moutonspour nos troupeaux et des villes pour nos petits enfants.
17 but we ourselves will march as troops in the van of the Israelites, until we have led them to their destination. Meanwhile our families can remain here in the fortified towns, safe from attack by the natives.	17 Mais nous-mêmes, nous prendrons les armes à la tête des Israélites, jusqu'à ce que nous ayonspu les conduire au lieu qui leur est destiné; ce sont nos petits enfants qui resteront dans les villes fortes, à l'abrides habitants du pays.
18 We will not return to our homes until every one of the Israelites has taken possession of his heritage,	18 Nous ne rentrerons pas chez nous avant que chacun des Israélites n'ait pris possession de sonhéritage.
19 and will not claim any heritage with them once we cross the Jordan, so long as we receive a heritage for ourselves on this eastern side of the Jordan."	19 Car nous ne posséderons pas d'héritage avec eux sur l'autre rive du Jourdain ni plus loin,puisque notre héritage nous sera échu au-delà du Jourdain, à l'orient."
20 Moses said to them in reply: "If you keep your word to march as troops in the LORD'S vanguard	20 Moïse leur dit: "Si vous mettez ces paroles en pratique, si vous êtes prêts au combat devantYahvé
21 and to cross the Jordan in full force before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out of his way	21 et si tous ceux d'entre vous qui portent les armes passent le Jourdain devant Yahvé, jusqu'à cequ'il ait chassé devant lui tous ses ennemis,
22 and the land is subdued before him, then you may return here, quit of every obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this region shall be your possession before the LORD.	22 alors, quand le pays aura été soumis à Yahvé, vous pourrez vous en retourner; vous serez quittesenvers Yahvé et envers Israël, et ce pays-ci sera votre propriété devant Yahvé.
23 But if you do not do this, you will sin against the LORD, and you can be sure that you will not escape the consequences of your sin.	23 Mais si vous n'agissez pas ainsi, vous pécherez contre Yahvé, et sachez que votre péché voustrouvera.
24 Build the towns, then, for your families, and the folds for your flocks, but also fulfill your express promise."	24 Construisez donc des villes pour vos enfants et des parcs pour votre petit bétail; mais ce quevous avez promis, faites-le."
25 The Gadites and Reubenites answered Moses, "Your servants will do as you command, my lord.	25 Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben dirent à Moïse: "Tes serviteurs feront ce que Monseigneur aprescrit.
26 While our wives and children, our herds and other livestock remain in the towns of Gilead,	26 Nos enfants, nos femmes, nos troupeaux, et tout notre bétail sont là, dans les villes de Galaad,
27 all your servants will go across as armed troops to battle before the LORD, just as your lordship says."	27 mais tes serviteurs, tous ceux qui sont armés pour la campagne, passeront, devant Yahvé, pourcombattre comme l'a dit Monseigneur."
28 Moses, therefore, gave this order in their regard to the priest Eleazar, to Joshua, son of Nun, and to the heads of the ancestral tribes of the Israelites:	28 Alors Moïse donna des ordres à leur sujet à Eléazar le prêtre, à Josué, fils de Nûn, et aux chefsde familles des tribus d'Israël.
29 "If all the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you as combat troops before the LORD, you shall give them Gilead as their property when the land has been subdued before you.	29 Moïse leur dit: "Si les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben, tous ceux qui portent les armes, passentavec vous le Jourdain pour combattre devant Yahvé, quand le pays vous aura été soumis vous leur donnerez enpropriété le pays de Galaad.
30 But if they will not go across with you as combat troops before the LORD, you shall bring their wives and children and livestock across before you into Canaan, and they shall have their property with you in the land of Canaan."	30 Mais s'ils ne passent pas en armes avec vous, c'est au pays de Canaan qu'ils recevront au milieude vous leur propriété."
31 To this the Gadites and Reubenites replied, "We will do what the LORD has commanded us, your servants.	31 Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben répondirent: "Ce que Yahvé a dit à tes serviteurs, nous leferons.
32 We ourselves will go across into the land of Canaan as troops before the LORD, but we will retain our hereditary property on this side of the Jordan."	32 Nous, nous passerons en armes devant Yahvé en terre de Canaan; toi, mets-nous en possessionde notre héritage au-delà du Jourdain."
33 So Moses gave them (the Gadites and Reubenites, as well as half the tribe of Manasseh, son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og, king of Bashan,) the land with its towns and the districts that surrounded them.	33 Moïse leur donna -- aux fils de Gad, aux fils de Ruben et à la demi-tribu de Manassé, fils deJoseph -- le royaume de Sihôn, roi des Amorites, le royaume d'Og, roi du Bashân, le pays avec les villescomprises dans son territoire, les villes-frontières du pays.
34 The Gadites rebuilt the fortified towns of Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,	34 Les fils de Gad construisirent Dibôn, Atarot et Aroër,
35 Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,	35 Atrot-Shophân, Yazèr, Yogboha,
36 Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, and they built sheepfolds.	36 Bet-Nimra, Bet-Harân, villes fortes, et des parcs pour le petit bétail.
37 The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,	37 Les fils de Ruben construisirent Heshbôn, Eléalé, Qiryatayim,
38 Nebo, Baal-meon (names to be changed!), and Sibmah. These towns, which they rebuilt, they called by their old names.	38 Nebo, Baal-Meôn (dont les noms furent changés), Sibma. Ils donnèrent des noms aux villesqu'ils avaient construites.
39 The descendants of Machir, son of Manasseh, invaded Gilead and captured it, driving out the Amorites who were there.	39 Les fils de Makir, fils de Manassé, partirent en Galaad. Ils le conquirent et chassèrent lesAmorites qui s'y trouvaient.
40 (Moses gave Gilead to Machir, son of Manasseh, and he settled there.)	40 Moïse donna Galaad à Makir, fils de Manassé, qui s'y établit.
41 Jair, a Manassehite clan, campaigned against the tent villages, captured them and called them Havvoth-jair.	41 Yaïr, fils de Manassé, alla s'emparer de leurs douars et les appela Douars de Yaïr.
42 Nobah also campaigned against Kenath, captured it with its dependencies and called it Nobah after his own name.	42 Nobah alla s'emparer de Qenat et des villes de son ressort, et l'appela de son propre nom,Nobah.
