1 The LORD said to Moses,	1 Jahvè parlò a Mosè:
2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."	2 «Manda uomini a esplorare la terra di Canaan che io sto per dare ai figli di Israele. Ne manderai uno per ogni tribù, tutti i loro principi».
3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;	3 Dietro il comando di Jahvè, Mosè li mandò dal deserto di Paran. Tutti questi uomini erano i principi di Israele.
4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;	4 Questi sono i loro nomi: Shammua figlio di Zaccur per la tribù di Ruben;
5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;	5 Shafat figlio Khori per la tribù di Simeone;

16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.	16 Questi sono i nomi degli uomini che Mosè mandò a esplorare la terra. Mosè diede a Osea il nome di Giosuè.
17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,	17 Mosè li mandò a esplorare la terra di Canaan dicendo: «Salite, allora, attraverso il Negheb, poi salite la montagna
18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?	18 e osservate come è la terra e come è il popolo che la abita: se è forte è debole, se è poco numeroso o in grande numero,
19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?	19 come è la terra in cui abita: se è buona o cattiva; come sono le città in cui abita, se in accampamenti o in città fortificate;
20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.	20 come è il terreno: se fertile o magro, se vi sono alberi o no. Dimostratevi coraggiosi e portate frutti della terra». Era l'epoca delle prime uve.
21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.	21 Salirono ed esplorarono la terra dal deserto di Sin fino a Rekhob in direzione di Hamat.
22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)	22 Salirono attraverso il Negheb e giunsero a Hebron dove si trovavano Akhiman, Sheshai e Talmai, discendenti di Anak — Hebron fu edificata sette anni prima di Zoan in Egitto. —
23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.	23 Giunsero fino alla valle di Eshchol e qui tagliarono un tralcio con un grappolo di uva che portarono in due su una stanga con melegrane e fichi.
24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.	24 Questo luogo fu chiamato valle di Eshchol a causa del grappolo che i figli di Israele vi tagliarono.
25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,	25 Al termine di quaranta giorni, ritornarono dall’esplorazione della terra.
26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.	26 Giunti al deserto di Paran, a Kadesh, andarono da Mosè, da Aronne e da tutta la comunità dei figli di Israele. A loro e a tutta la comunità riferirono e mostrarono i frutti della terra.
27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.	27 Narrarono: «Siamo andati nella terra dove ci hai mandato. Veramente in essa scorre latte e miele e questi sono i suoi frutti.
28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.	28 Però il popolo che abita la terra è potente, le città sono fortificate e molto grandi e vi abbiamo visto perfino i discendenti di Anak.
29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."	29 L’Amalecita abita la terra del Negheb; l’Hittita, l’Hivveo, il Gebuseo e l’Amorreo abitano la montagna; il Cananeo abita la costa del mare e le rive del Giordano».
30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."	30 Chaleb allora quietò il mormorio del popolo contro Mosè e disse: «Dobbiamo salire e prenderne possesso. Certo, ne siamo capaci».
31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."	31 Ma gli uomini che erano stati con lui dissero: «Non possiamo salire verso quel popolo perché è più forte di noi».
32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,	32 E iniziarono a diffondere tra i figli di Israele cattive notizie sulla terra che avevano esplorato: «La terra che, esplorando, abbiamo attraversato è una terra che divora i suoi abitanti. 33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."	33 Vi abbiamo visto i giganti, figli di Anak, discendenti dei giganti. A noi pareva di essere come locuste e tali dovevamo sembrare anche a loro».
