In the second year of his reign, King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream which left his spirit no rest and robbed him of his sleep.1 El año segundo de su reinado, Nabucodonosor tuvo un sueño; su espíritu se sobresaltó y no podía dormir.
So he ordered that the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and Chaldeans be summoned to interpret the dream for him. When they came and presented themselves to the king,2 El rey mandó llamar a los magos, astrólogos, agoreros y adivinos para que le explicaran su sueño. Vinieron y se presentaron ante el rey.
he said to them, "I had a dream which will allow my spirit no rest until I know what it means."3 Este les dijo: —He tenido un sueño y mi espíritu está sobresaltado hasta que logre entenderlo.
The Chaldeans answered the king (Aramaic): "O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream and we will give its meaning."4 Los adivinos dijeron al rey en arameo: —¡Viva el rey eternamente!
The king answered the Chaldeans, "This is what I have decided: unless you tell me the dream and its meaning, you shall be cut to pieces and your houses destroyed.5 Respondió el rey y dijo a los adivinos:—El veredicto que he pronunciado es firme. Si no me decís el sueño y su interpretación, os cortarán los miembros del cuerpo y vuestras casas serán reducidas a escombros.
But if you tell me the dream and its meaning, you shall receive from me gifts and presents and great honors. Now tell me the dream and its meaning."6 Pero si exponéis el sueño y su interpretación, recibiréis de mí dones, regalos y gran honor. Por tanto, decidme el sueño y su interpretación.
Again they answered, "Let the king tell his servants the dream and we will give its meaning."7 De nuevo dijeron: —Cuente el rey el sueño a sus siervos y expondremos su interpretación.
But the king replied: "I know for certain that you are bargaining for time, since you know what I have decided.8 Contestó el rey:—Verdaderamente me doy cuenta de que queréis ganar tiempo, pues habéis visto que el veredicto que he pronunciado es firme.
If you do not tell me the dream, there can be but one decree for you. You have framed a false and deceitful interpretation to present me with till the crisis is past. Tell me the dream, therefore, that I may be sure that you can also give its correct interpretation."9 Ahora bien, si no me decís el sueño es porque habéis tomado vuestra decisión: os habéis puesto de acuerdo para decirme algo falso y engañoso mientras va pasando el tiempo. Por tanto, decidme el sueño y sabré que me exponéis su interpretación.
The Chaldeans answered the king: "There is not a man on earth who can do what you ask, O king; never has any king, however great and mighty, asked such a thing of any magician, enchanter, or Chaldean.10 Los adivinos replicaron al rey: —No hay hombre en la tierra que pueda resolver lo que pide el rey; por ello ningún monarca, aun siendo grande y poderoso, hizo una petición semejante a ningún mago, astrólogo o adivino.
What you demand, O king, is too difficult; there is no one who can tell it to the king except the gods who do not dwell among men."11 La petición que hace el rey es tan difícil que no hay nadie que pueda responderla al rey, a no ser los dioses cuya morada no está con los mortales.
At this the king became violently angry and ordered all the wise men of Babylon to be put to death.12 Ante esto, el rey se encolerizó y se enfureció muchísimo, y mandó exterminar a todos los sabios de Babilonia.
When the decree was issued that the wise men should be slain, Daniel and his companions were also sought out.13 Se publicó el decreto de que fueran ejecutados los sabios, y buscaron a Daniel y a sus compañeros para matarlos.
Then Daniel prudently took counsel with Arioch, the captain of the king's guard, who had set out to kill the wise men of Babylon:14 Entonces Daniel se dirigió con sabiduría y prudencia a Arioc, jefe de la guardia real, que había salido a matar a los sabios de Babilonia,
"O officer of the king," he asked, "what is the reason for this harsh order from the king?" When Arioch told him,15 y preguntó a Arioc, a quien el rey había puesto al mando: —¿Por qué un decreto tan severo de parte del rey? Inmediatamente Arioc informó del asunto a Daniel.
Daniel went and asked for time from the king, that he might give him the interpretation.16 Daniel fue y pidió al rey que le diera algún tiempo y él le expondría la interpretación del sueño.
Daniel went home and informed his companions Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,17 Después Daniel marchó a su casa y expuso el asunto a sus compañeros Ananías, Misael y Azarías,
that they might implore the mercy of the God of heaven in regard to this mystery, so that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.18 a fin de que implorasen misericordia al Dios del cielo sobre aquel secreto, para que no pereciesen Daniel y sus compañeros con los demás sabios de Babilonia.
During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision, and he blessed the God of heaven:19 Entonces, en una visión nocturna, se le reveló el secreto a Daniel, y Daniel bendijo al Dios del cielo.
"Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and power are his.20 Daniel alzó la voz y dijo: «Bendito sea el nombre de Dios | por los siglos de los siglos, | pues suyos son la sabiduría y el poder.
He causes the changes of the times and seasons, makes kings and unmakes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who understand.21 Él hace cambiar los tiempos y las estaciones, | y quita y pone a los reyes, | da la sabiduría a los sabios | y la inteligencia a los inteligentes.
He reveals deep and hidden things and knows what is in the darkness, for the light dwells with him.22 Él revela lo profundo y lo oculto, | y conoce lo que hay en las tinieblas; | la luz habita junto a él.
To you, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, because you have given me wisdom and power. Now you have shown me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the king's dream."23 A ti, Dios de mis padres, yo te doy gracias y alabo, | porque me has otorgado sabiduría y fortaleza, | y ahora me has revelado lo que hemos pedido, | me has hecho saber el asunto del rey».
So Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, "Do not put the wise men of Babylon to death. Bring me before the king, and I will tell him the interpretation of the dream."
"I have found a man among the Judean captives who can give the interpretation to the king."25 Inmediatamente Arioc introdujo a Daniel ante el rey y habló de este modo: —He encontrado un hombre de los deportados de Judá que expondrá al rey la interpretación del sueño.
The king asked Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, "Can you tell me the dream that I had, and its meaning?"26 El rey preguntó a Daniel, cuyo nombre era Baltasar: —¿De modo que eres capaz de contarme el sueño que he visto y de exponerme su interpretación?
In the king's presence Daniel made this reply: "The mystery about which the king has inquired, the wise men, enchanters, magicians, and astrologers could not explain to the king.27 Dirigiéndose al rey, Daniel contestó: —El secreto del que habla su majestad no lo pueden explicar al rey ni sabios, ni astrólogos, ni magos, ni adivinos,
But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what is to happen in days to come; this was the dream you saw as you lay in bed.28 pero hay un Dios en el cielo que revela los secretos y que ha anunciado al rey Nabucodonosor lo que sucederá al final de los tiempos.
To you in your bed there came thoughts about what should happen in the future, and he who reveals mysteries showed you what is to be.29 «Tú, oh rey, mientras estabas en tu lecho, te pusiste a pensar en lo que iba a suceder más tarde, y el que revela los secretos te comunicó lo que va a suceder.
To me also this mystery has been revealed; not that I am wiser than any other living person, but in order that its meaning may be made known to the king, that you may understand the thoughts in your own mind.30 En cuanto a mí, se me ha revelado este secreto, no porque tenga una sabiduría superior a la de todos los vivientes, sino para que exponga su interpretación al rey, de modo que puedas entender lo que tenías en la mente».
"In your vision, O king, you saw a statue, very large and exceedingly bright, terrifying in appearance as it stood before you.31 «Tú, oh rey, estabas mirando y apareció una gran estatua. Era una estatua enorme y su brillo extraordinario resplandecía ante ti, y su aspecto era terrible.
The head of the statue was pure gold, its chest and arms were silver, its belly and thighs bronze,32 Aquella estatua tenía la cabeza de oro fino, el pecho y los brazos de plata, el vientre y los muslos de bronce,
the legs iron, its feet partly iron and partly tile.33 las piernas de hierro, y los pies de hierro mezclado con barro.
While you looked at the statue, a stone which was hewn from a mountain without a hand being put to it, struck its iron and tile feet, breaking them in pieces.34 Mientras estabas mirando, una piedra se desprendió sin intervención humana, chocó con los pies de hierro y barro de la estatua, y los hizo pedazos.
The iron, tile, bronze, silver, and gold all crumbled at once, fine as the chaff on the threshing floor in summer, and the wind blew them away without leaving a trace.
"This was the dream; the interpretation we shall also give in the king's presence.36 «Este era el sueño; ahora explicaremos al rey su sentido:
You, O king, are the king of kings; to you the God of heaven has given dominion and strength, power and glory;37 Tú, ¡oh rey, rey de reyes!, a quien el Dios del cielo ha entregado el reino y el poder, y el dominio y la gloria,
men, wild beasts, and birds of the air, wherever they may dwell, he has handed over to you, making you ruler over them all; you are the head of gold.38 y a quien ha dado todos los territorios habitados por hombres, bestias del campo y aves del cielo, para que reines sobre todos ellos, tú eres la cabeza de oro.
Another kingdom shall take your place, inferior to yours, then a third kingdom, of bronze, which shall rule over the whole earth.39 Te sucederá otro reino menos poderoso; después, un tercer reino de bronce, que dominará a todo el orbe.
There shall be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron; it shall break in pieces and subdue all these others, just as iron breaks in pieces and crushes everything else.40 Vendrá después un cuarto reino, fuerte como el hierro; como el hierro destroza y machaca todo, así destrozará y triturará a todos.
The feet and toes you saw, partly of potter's tile and partly of iron, mean that it shall be a divided kingdom, but yet have some of the hardness of iron. As you saw the iron mixed with clay tile,41 Los pies y los dedos que viste, de hierro mezclado con barro de alfarero, representan un reino dividido, aunque conservará algo del vigor del hierro, porque viste hierro mezclado con arcilla.
and the toes partly iron and partly tile, the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile.42 Los dedos de los pies, de hierro y barro, son un reino a la vez poderoso y débil.
The iron mixed with clay tile means that they shall seal their alliances by intermarriage, but they shall not stay united, any more than iron mixes with clay.43 Como viste el hierro mezclado con la arcilla, así se mezclarán los linajes, pero no llegarán a fundirse uno con otro, lo mismo que no se puede fundir el hierro con el barro.
In the lifetime of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed or delivered up to another people; rather, it shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and put an end to them, and it shall stand forever.44 Durante ese reinado, el Dios del cielo suscitará un reino que nunca será destruido, ni su dominio pasará a otro pueblo, sino que destruirá y acabará con todos los demás reinos, y él durará por siempre.
That is the meaning of the stone you saw hewn from the mountain without a hand being put to it, which broke in pieces the tile, iron, bronze, silver, and gold.
Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell down and worshiped Daniel and ordered sacrifice and incense offered to him.46 Entonces el rey Nabucodonosor se postró rostro en tierra rindiendo homenaje a Daniel y mandó que le ofrecieran sacrificios y oblaciones.
To Daniel the king said, "Truly your God is the God of gods and Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries; that is why you were able to reveal this mystery."47 El rey dijo a Daniel: —Sin duda que vuestro Dios es Dios de dioses y Señor de reyes; él revela los secretos, puesto que tú fuiste capaz de explicar este secreto.
He advanced Daniel to a high post, gave him many generous presents, made him ruler of the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon.48 El rey exaltó a Daniel, le dio muchos y espléndidos regalos y le hizo gobernador de toda la provincia de Babilonia y jefe supremo sobre todos los sabios de Babilonia.
At Daniel's request the king made Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego administrators of the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the king's court.49 Daniel pidió al rey que pusiera a Sidrac, Misac y Abdénago en la administración de la provincia de Babilonia, mientras que Daniel permaneció en la corte del rey.
