1 After King Astyages was laid with his fathers, Cyrus the Persian succeeded to his kingdom.	1 65 (Volgata 14, 1) Il re Astiage fu deposto accanto ai suoi padri e Ciro il Persiano raccolse il regno di lui.
2 Daniel was the king's favorite and was held in higher esteem than any of the friends of the king.	2 Ora, Daniele viveva accanto al re ed era stimato più di tutti i suoi amici.
3 The Babylonians had an idol called Bel, and every day they provided for it six barrels of fine flour, forty sheep, and six measures of wine.	3 Allora i Babilonesi avevano un idolo, chiamato Bel, e ogni giorno consumavano per esso dodici artabe di fior di farina, quaranta pecore e sei metrete di vino.

5 When the king asked him, "Why do you not adore Bel?" Daniel replied, "Because I worship not idols made with hands, but only the living God who made heaven and earth and has dominion over all mankind."	5 Ora, gli disse il re: «Perché non adori Bel?» Egli rispose: «Perché non venero idoli fatti dalle mani, ma il Dio vivo che ha creato il cielo e la terra e ha il dominio su ogni vivente».

7 Daniel began to laugh. "Do not be deceived, O king," he said; "it is only clay inside and bronze outside; it has never taken any food or drink."	7 Daniele, ridendo, replicò: «Non illuderti, o re. Questo, infatti, dentro è argilla e fuori è bronzo e non ha mai né mangiato né bevuto».
8 Enraged, the king called his priests and said to them, "Unless you tell me who it is that consumes these provisions, you shall die.	8 Allora il re, adirato, convocò i sacerdoti di quello e disse loro: «Se non mi dite chi mangia questa spesa, morirete; se dimostrate che Bel mangia quelle cose, morirà Daniele, perché ha. bestemmiato contro Bel».
9 But if you can show that Bel consumes them, Daniel shall die for blaspheming Bel." Daniel said to the king, "Let it be as you say!"	9 Allora Daniele disse al re: «Si faccia secondo la tua parola». I sacerdoti erano settanta, senza contare le mogli e i figli.
10 There were seventy priests of Bel, besides their wives and children. When the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel,	10 Il re poi andò con Daniele al tempio di Bel.
11 the priests of Bel said, "See, we are going to leave. Do you, O king, set out the food and prepare the wine; then shut the door and seal it with your ring.	11 Dissero i sacerdoti di Bel: «Ecco, noi ci allontaniamo: tu, o re, presenta i cibi e, mescolato il vino, lascialo, chiudi la porta e sigilla con il tuo anello; se, venuto di buon mattino, non troverai tutto mangiato da Bel, moriremo noi; in caso contrario, morirà Daniele che mentisce contro di noi».
12 If you do not find that Bel has eaten it all when you return in the morning, we are to die; otherwise Daniel shall die for his lies against us."	12 Questi si illudevano perché avevano praticato sotto l’altare un ingresso nascosto attraverso il quale entravano tutti i giorni e facevano scomparire tutto.
13 They were not perturbed, because under the table they had made a secret entrance through which they always came in to consume the food.	13 Appena quelli uscirono, il re presentò i cibi a Bel.
14 After they departed the king set the food before Bel, while Daniel ordered his servants to bring some ashes, which they scattered through the whole temple; the king alone was present. Then they went outside, sealed the closed door with the king's ring, and departed.	14 Ma Daniele diede ordini ai suoi servitori ed essi portarono cenere e la setacciarono per tutto il tempio, alla presenza del solo re. 20 "I see the footprints of men, women, and children!" said the king.	20 Il re rispose: «Vedo impronte di uomini, di donne e di fanciulli».
21 The angry king arrested the priests, their wives, and their children. They showed him the secret door by which they used to enter to consume what was on the table.	21 Allora il re, adirato, fece riunire i sacerdoti con le mogli e i figli: gli furono mostrate le porte segrete per le quali essi entravano e consumavano quanto era sull’altare.
22 He put them to death, and handed Bel over to Daniel, who destroyed it and its temple.	22 Il re allora li fece uccidere e consegnò Bel a Daniele, che distrusse quello e il suo tempio.
23 There was a great dragon which the Babylonians worshiped.	23 C'era poi un grande serpente venerato dai Babilonesi.
24 "Look!" said the king to Daniel, "you cannot deny that this is a living god, so adore it."	24 Il re disse a Daniele: «Non puoi affermare che questo non sia un dio vivo, adoralo dunque!»
25 But Daniel answered, "I adore the Lord, my God, for he is the living God.	25 Daniele rispose: «Adorerò il Signore mio Dio, poiché Lui è il Dio vero. Tu poi, o re, accordami il permesso e io ucciderò il serpente senza spada e bastone».
26 Give me permission, O king, and I will kill this dragon without sword or club." "I give you permission," the king said.	26 Il re rispose: «Ti è concesso».
27 Then Daniel took some pitch, fat, and hair; these he boiled together and made into cakes. He put them into the mouth of the dragon, and when the dragon ate them, he burst asunder. "This," he said, "is what you worshiped."	27 Allora Daniele prese pece, sego e peli, li fece bollire insieme, ne impastò focacce e le gettò nella bocca del serpente; il serpente, ingoiatele, scoppiò. Allora egli disse: «Guardate l’oggetto della vostra venerazione!»
28 When the Babylonians heard this, they were angry and turned against the king. "The king has become a Jew," they said; "he has destroyed Bel, killed the dragon, and put the priests to death."	28 Quando i Babilonesi lo seppero, si sdegnarono grandemente e si ribellarono al re dicendo: «Un Giudeo è divenuto il re, ha abbattuto Bel, ha ucciso il serpente e fatto trucidare i sacerdoti!»
29 They went to the king and demanded: "Hand Daniel over to us, or we will kill you and your family."	29 Venuti presso il re, dissero: «Consegnaci Daniele, altrimenti uccideremo te e la tua famiglia».
30 When he saw himself threatened with violence, the king was forced to hand Daniel over to them.	30 Allora il re si rese conto che ne era costretto e sdegnato, consegnò loro Daniele.
31 They threw Daniel into a lions' den, where he remained six days.	31 Quelli lo gettarono nella fossa dei leoni, dove rimase sei giorni.
32 In the den were seven lions, and two carcasses and two sheep had been given to them daily. But now they were given nothing, so that they would devour Daniel.	32 Nella fossa erano sette leoni e ogni giorno si davano a essi due corpi e due pecore che allora non furono loro dati perché divorassero Daniele.
33 In Judea there was a prophet, Habakkuk; he mixed some bread in a bowl with the stew he had boiled, and was going to bring it to the reapers in the field,	33 Ora C'era nella Giudea Abacuc il profeta. 35 But Habakkuk answered, "Babylon, sir, I have never seen, and I do not know the den!"	35 Ma Abacuc rispose: «Non ho mai visto Babilonia e ignoro la fossa dei leoni».
36 The angel of the Lord seized him by the crown of his head and carried him by the hair; with the speed of the wind, he set him down in Babylon above the den.	36 Allora l’angelo del Signore afferrò la testa di Îui e, sollevatolo per la chioma, lo depose a Babilonia, sopra la fossa, nell’impetuosità del suo soffio.
37 "Daniel, Daniel," cried Habakkuk, "take the lunch God has sent you."	37 Abacuc gridò: «Daniele, Daniele, prendi il pasto che Dio ti ha mandato!»
38 "You have remembered me, O God," said Daniel; "you have not forsaken those who love you."	38 Daniele esclamò: «Dio, ti sei ricordato di me e non hai abbandonato coloro che ti amano».
39 While Daniel began to eat, the angel of the Lord at once brought Habakkuk back to his own place.	39 E Daniele, levatosi, mangiò. L’angelo del Signore riportò all’istante Abacuc al suo posto.
40 On the seventh day the king came to mourn for Daniel. As he came to the den and looked in, there was Daniel, sitting there!	40 Quindi, il settimo giorno, il re venne a piangere Daniele; giunse alla fossa e guardò dentro: ed ecco Daniele era seduto.
41 The king cried aloud, "You are great, O Lord, the God of Daniel, and there is no other besides you!"	41 Gridando a grande voce, il re disse: «Sei grande, o Signore, Dio di Daniele e non c’è altro dio all’infuori di te».
42 Daniel he took out, but those who had tried to destroy him he threw into the den, and they were devoured in a moment before his eyes.	42 Lo fece uscire e gettò nella fossa i colpevoli della rovina di lui, i quali furono divorati all’istante in sua presenza.
	43 Allora disse il re: «Tutti coloro che abitano su tutta la terra temano il Dio di Daniele, poiché egli è il salvatore che fa prodigi e miracoli sulla terra, che ha liberato Daniele dalla fossa dei leoni»
