Jeremiah 42

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Then all the army leaders, Johanan, son of Kareah, Azariah, son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, high and low, approached the prophet Jeremiah	1 Alors tous les officiers, notamment Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, et Azarya, fils de Hoshaya, ainsi quetout le peuple, petits et grands, vinrent
2 and said, "Grant our petition; pray for us to the LORD, your God, for all this remnant. We are now few who once were many, as you well see.	2 dire au prophète Jérémie: "Que notre supplication puisse te toucher! Intercède auprès de Yahvé tonDieu en notre faveur et en faveur de tout ce reste -- car nous sommes restés bien peu du nombre que nous étions,comme tu le vois de tes propres yeux --
3 Let the LORD, your God, show us what way we should take and what we should do."	3 pour que Yahvé ton Dieu nous indique quelle voie nous devons suivre et ce que nous devonsfaire."
4 Very well! the prophet Jeremiah answered them: I will pray to the LORD, your God, as you desire; whatever the LORD answers you, I will tell you; I will withhold nothing from you.	4 Le prophète Jérémie leur répondit: "J'entends. Je vais intercéder auprès de Yahvé votre Dieu selonvotre demande; et toute parole que Yahvé vous répondra, je vous la ferai savoir, sans vous en rien cacher."
5 And they said to Jeremiah, "May the LORD be our witness: we will truly and faithfully follow all the instructions the LORD, your God, will send us.	5 De leur côté, ils dirent à Jérémie: "Que Yahvé soit témoin contre nous, véridique et fidèle, si nousn'agissons pas exactement selon la parole que Yahvé ton Dieu t'aura envoyée pour nous.
6 Whether it is pleasant or difficult, we will obey the command of the LORD, our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well with us for obeying the command of the LORD, our God."	6 Que ce soit agréable ou désagréable, nous obéirons à la voix de Yahvé notre Dieu, auprès de quinous te députons: ainsi serons-nous heureux pour avoir obéi à la voix de Yahvé notre Dieu."
7 Ten days passed before the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah.	7 Au bout de dix jours, la parole de Yahvé fut adressée à Jérémie.
8 Then he called Johanan, son of Kareah, his army leaders, and all the people, high and low,	8 Alors il convoqua Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, et tous les officiers qui étaient auprès de lui, ainsi quetout le peuple, petits et grands.
9 and said to them: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to offer your prayer:	9 Il leur dit: "Ainsi parle Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, auprès de qui vous m'avez député pour luiprésenter votre supplication.
10 If you remain quietly in this land I will build you up, and not tear you down; I will plant you, not uproot you; for I regret the evil I have done you.	10 Si vraiment vous restez dans ce pays, je vous bâtirai et ne vous démolirai plus, je vous planteraiet ne vous arracherai plus. Car je me repentirai du mal que je vous ai fait.
11 Do not fear the king of Babylon, before whom you are now afraid; do not fear him, says the LORD, for I am with you to save you, to rescue you from his power.	11 Ne craignez pas le roi de Babylone devant qui vous êtes tout craintifs. Ne le craignez pas -- oraclede Yahvé -- car je suis avec vous pour vous sauver et vous délivrer de sa main.
12 I will grant you mercy, so that he will be sorry for you and let you return to your land.	12 Je vous ferai prendre en pitié, pour qu'il vous prenne en pitié et vous laisse revenir sur votre sol.
13 But if you disobey the voice of the LORD, your God, and decide not to remain in this land,	13 Mais si vous dites: Nous ne resterons pas dans ce pays, désobéissant ainsi à la voix de Yahvévotre Dieu,
14 saying, "No, we will go to Egypt, where we will see no more of war, hear the trumpet alarm no longer, nor hunger for bread; there we will live";	14 si vous dites: Non! C'est au pays d'Egypte que nous irons; là nous ne verrons plus la guerre, nousn'entendrons plus l'appel du cor et ne manquerons plus de pain; c'est là que nous voulons demeurer,
15 then listen to the word of the LORD, remnant of Judah: Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: If you are determined to go to Egypt, when you arrive there to stay,	15 eh bien! en ce cas, reste de Juda, écoutez la parole de Yahvé: Ainsi parle Yahvé Sabaot, le Dieud'Israël. Si vous êtes résolus à aller en Egypte et que vous y entriez pour y séjourner,
16 the sword you fear shall reach you in the land of Egypt; the hunger you dread shall cling to you no less in Egypt, and there you shall die.	16 l'épée que vous redoutez, elle vous atteindra là, en terre d'Egypte; et la famine qui vous inquiète,elle s'attachera à vos pas, là en Egypte: c'est là que vous mourrez!
17 All those men who determine to go to Egypt to stay, shall die by the sword, famine, and pestilence; not one shall survive or escape the evil that I will bring upon them.	17 Et tous les hommes résolus à aller en Egypte pour y séjourner y mourront par l'épée, la famine etla peste: pas un seul survivant ni rescapé n'échappera au malheur que je vais leur amener.
18 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Just as my furious anger was poured out upon the citizens of Jerusalem, so shall my anger be poured out on you when you reach Egypt. You shall become an example of malediction and horror, a curse and a reproach, and you shall never see this place again.	18 Oui, ainsi parle Yahvé Sabaot, le Dieu d'Israël. Comme se sont déversées ma colère et ma fureursur les habitants de Jérusalem, ainsi ma fureur se déversera sur vous, si vous vous rendez en Egypte. Vous serezobjet d'exécration, de stupéfaction, de malédiction et de raillerie, et vous ne reverrez plus ces lieux.
19 It is the LORD who has spoken to you, remnant of Judah; do not go to Egypt! You can never say that I did not warn you this day.	19 Reste de Juda, Yahvé vous a déclaré: N'allez pas en Egypte! Sachez bien qu'aujourd'hui, je vousai avertis solennellement.
20 At the cost of your lives you have deceived me, sending me to the LORD, your God, saying, "Pray for us to the LORD, our God; make known to us all that the LORD, our God, shall say, and we will do it."	20 Vous vous êtes égarés vous-mêmes quand vous m'avez député auprès de Yahvé votre Dieu endisant: Intercède pour nous auprès de Yahvé notre Dieu, et tout ce qu'aura ordonné Yahvé notre Dieu, annonce-le nous pour que nous l'exécutions.
21 Today I proclaim his message, but you obey the voice of the LORD, your God, in nothing that he has commissioned me to make known to you.	21 Et aujourd'hui, je vous l'annonce mais vous n'obéissez à la voix de Yahvé votre Dieu en rien dece qu'il m'envoie vous dire.
22 Have no doubt of this, you shall die by the sword, famine, and pestilence in the place where you wish to go and settle.	22 Sachez donc bien que vous mourrez par l'épée, la famine et la peste au lieu où vous avez désirévous rendre pour y séjourner."
