1 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, went on an expedition against all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.	1 El año decimocuarto del rey Ezequías, Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, marchó contra todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá y se apoderó de ellas.
2 From Lachish the king of Assyria sent his commander with a great army to King Hezekiah in Jerusalem. When he stopped at the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway of the fuller's field,	2 El rey de Asiria envió desde Laquis al copero mayor con un fuerte destacamento a Jerusalén, donde se hallaba el rey Ezequías. El copero mayor se detuvo junto al canal de la Alberca Superior, en el camino del Campo del Batanero.
3 there came out to him the master of the palace, Eliakim, son of Hilkiah, and Shebna the scribe, and the herald Joah, son of Asaph.	3 Salieron a recibirlo Eliaquín, hijo de Jilquías, mayordomo de palacio, el secretario Sobná y el canciller Joaj, hijo de Asaf.
4 The commander said to them, "Tell King Hezekiah: Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, 'On what do you base this confidence of yours?	4 El copero mayor les dijo: «Decid a Ezequías: Así habla el Gran Rey, el rey de Asiria: ¿En qué fundas tu confianza?
5 Do you think mere words substitute for strategy and might in war? On whom, then, do you rely, that you rebel against me?	5 Has pensado que la estrategia y valentía militares son cuestión de palabras. Pero, ¿en quién confías para haberte rebelado contra mí?
6 This Egypt, the staff on which you rely, is in fact a broken reed which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it. That is what Pharaoh, king of Egypt, is to all who rely on him.	6 Has confiado en el apoyo de Egipto, esa caña quebrada, que penetra y traspasa la mano de quien se apoya en ella. Eso es faraón, rey de Egipto, para todos los que en él confían.
7 But if you say to me: "We rely on the LORD, our God," is not he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, commanding Judah and Jerusalem to worship before this altar?'	7 Y si me replicas: “Nosotros confiamos en el Señor, nuestro Dios”, ¿no es ese el dios cuyos santuarios y altares retiró Ezequías, el cual dio a Judá y a Jerusalén esta orden: “Rendiréis culto solo ante este altar”?
8 "Now, make a wager with my lord the king of Assyria: 'I will give you two thousand horses, if you can put riders on them.'	8 Haz, pues, una apuesta con mi señor, el rey de Asiria: te daré dos mil caballos, si eres capaz de agenciarte jinetes para ellos.
9 How then can you repulse even one of the least servants of my lord? And yet you rely on Egypt for chariots and horsemen!	9 ¿Cómo podrías rechazar ni siquiera a un solo oficial de los siervos de mi señor, aunque fuera el más insignificante? ¡Tú confías en Egipto para disponer de carros y caballería!
10 'Was it without the LORD'S will that I have come up to destroy this land? The LORD said to me, "Go up and destroy that land!"'"	10 ¿Crees que he marchado contra este país para destruirlo sin contar con el Señor? Es el Señor quien me ha dicho: “Marcha contra esta tierra y destrúyela”».
11 Then Eliakim and Shebna and Joah said to the commander, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic; we understand it. Do not speak to us in Judean within earshot of the people who are on the wall."	11 Eliaquín, Sobná y Joaj dijeron al copero mayor: «Por favor, háblanos en arameo, que lo entendemos; no nos hables en hebreo en presencia de la gente que está en la muralla».
12 But the commander replied, "Was it to you and your master that my lord sent me to speak these words? Was it not rather to the men sitting on the wall, who, with you, will have to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?"	12 El copero mayor respondió: «¿Es a tu señor y a vosotros a quienes me envía mi señor para que os diga estas cosas? No; a quienes me envía es precisamente a los hombres que se asoman en la muralla. Son ellos quienes habrán de comer sus excrementos y beber su orina con vosotros».
13 Then the commander stepped forward and cried out in a loud voice in Judean, "Listen to the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.	13 Entonces el copero mayor se puso en pie y gritó a toda voz en hebreo: «Escuchad la palabra del Gran Rey, rey de Asiria.
14 Thus says the king: 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, since he cannot deliver you.	14 Esto dice el rey: No os engañe Ezequías, que no podrá libraros de mi mano.
15 Let not Hezekiah induce you to rely on the LORD, saying, "The LORD will surely save us; this city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria."'	15 Que Ezequías no os haga confiar en el Señor diciendo: “El Señor nos librará y esta ciudad no caerá jamás en manos del rey de Asiria”.
16 Do not listen to Hezekiah, for the king of Assyria says: 'Make peace with me and surrender! Then each of you will eat of his own vine and of his own fig tree, and drink the water of his own cistern,	16 No hagáis caso a Ezequías, porque así habla el rey de Asiria: “Rendíos y haced la paz conmigo. Cada uno podrá comer de su viña y de su higuera, y beber agua de su cisterna,
17 until I come to take you to a land like your own, a land of grain and wine, of bread and vineyards.	17 hasta que yo llegue y os conduzca a una tierra como la vuestra, tierra de trigo y vino, de pan y de viñas.
18 Do not let Hezekiah seduce you by saying, "The LORD will save us." Has any of the gods of the nations ever rescued his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?	18 Que no os engañe Ezequías cuando dice: ‘El Señor nos librará’. ¿Es que los dioses de las otras naciones han podido librar sus territorios de la mano del rey de Asiria?
19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Where are the gods of Samaria? Have they saved Samaria from my hand?	19 ¿Dónde están los dioses de Jamat y de Arpad? ¿Dónde están los dioses de Sefarvaín? ¿Han librado a Samaría de mi mano?
20 Which of all the gods of these lands ever rescued his land from my hand? Will the LORD then save Jerusalem from my hand?'"	20 ¿Quién, de entre todos los dioses de esas naciones, ha librado su territorio de mi poder, como para que pueda el Señor librar a Jerusalén de mi mano?”».
21 But they remained silent and did not answer him one word, for the king had ordered them not to answer him.	21 Ellos callaban y no le respondieron ni una palabra, pues el rey había ordenado: «No le respondáis».
22 Then the master of the palace, Eliakim, son of Hilkiah, Shebna the scribe, and the herald Joah, son of Asaph, came to Hezekiah with their garments torn, and reported to him what the commander had said.	22 Eliaquín, hijo de Jilquías, mayordomo de palacio, el secretario Sobná y Joaj, hijo de Asaf, se presentaron ante Ezequías con las vestiduras rasgadas, para comunicarle el mensaje pronunciado por el copero mayor.
