1 If you are chosen to preside at dinner, be not puffed up, but with the guests be as one of themselves; Take care of them first before you sit down;	1 - T'han fatto capo [del convito]? Non metter superbia: sii tra loro come uno di loro.
2 when you have fulfilled your duty, then take your place, To share in their joy and win praise for your hospitality.	2 Datti pensiero di loro e poi siediti: e sbrigato tutto quello che devi, [allora] mettiti a tavola;
3 Being older, you may talk; that is only your right, but temper your wisdom, not to disturb the singing.	3 affinchè tu abbia a rallegrarti a cagione loro, e per ornamento di grazia riceva la corona, e ottenga l'onoranza de' convitati.
4 When wine is present, do not pour out discourse, and flaunt not your wisdom at the wrong time.	4 Parla, o anziano, - poiché a te si conviene la prima parola -
5 Like a seal of carnelian in a setting of gold is a concert when wine is served.	5 con esatta dottrina, ma non impedir la musica.
6 Like a gold mounting with an emerald seal is string music with delicious wine.	6 Quando non ti si ascolta, non effonderti in discorsi, e non voler fuor di tempo far pompa della tua sapienza.
7 Young man, speak only when necessary, when they have asked you more than once;	7 Una gemma di carbonchio in castone d'oro, tal è un concerto di musica in un simposio.
8 Be brief, but say much in those few words, be like the wise man, taciturn.	8 Come un sigillo di smeraldo in legatura d'oro, così la melodia della musica [accompagnata] al dolce e moderato vino.
9 When among your elders be not forward, and with officials be not too insistent.	9 Ascolta in silenzio, e con la tua modestia ti guadagnerai la buona grazia.
10 Like the lightning that flashes before a storm is the esteem that shines on modesty.	10 Parla, o giovane, in causa propria, appena:
11 When it is time to leave, tarry not; be off for home! There take your ease,	11 se due volte sei interrogato, sia sommaria la tua risposta.
12 And there enjoy doing as you wish, but without sin or words of pride.	12 In molte cose fa' come se non sapessi, e ascolta, tacendo insieme e cercando [d'imparare].
13 Above all, give praise to your Creator, who showers his favors upon you.	13 In mezzo ai grandi non far il presuntuoso [trattandoli alla pari], e dove son vecchi, non parlar molto.
14 He who would find God must accept discipline; he who seeks him obtains his request.	14 Alla grandine va innanzi il lampo, e dinanzi alla modestia incede il favore: e con la tua modestia ti guadagnerai la buona grazia.
15 He who studies the law masters it, but the hypocrite finds it a trap.	15 E quand'è ora d'alzarti [di tavola], non ti gingillare, ma corri tra i primi a casa tua. E là distraiti, là scherza,
16 His judgment is sound who fears the LORD; out of obscurity he draws forth a clear plan.	16 e fa' quel che ti salta per il capo, ma senza peccati e parole insolenti.
17 The sinner turns aside reproof and distorts the law to suit his purpose.	17 E dopo tutto questo benedici il Signore che t'ha creato, e t'inebria di tutti i suoi beni.
18 The thoughtful man will not neglect direction; the proud and insolent man is deterred by nothing.	18 Chi teme il Signore, accoglie la sua dottrina, e chi di buon mattino lo cerca, trova la benedizione.
19 Do nothing without counsel, and then you need have no regrets.	19 Chi cerca la legge, n'avrà soddisfazione piena; chi fa l'ipocrita, ci troverà un'occasione di caduta.
20 Go not on a way that is set with snares, and let not the same thing trip you twice.	20 Quei che temono il Signore troveranno il retto giudizio, e come luce faran risplendere giuste sentenze.
21 Be not too sure even of smooth roads,	21 L'uomo peccatore sfugge la correzione, e trova un'interpretazione conforme alle proprie voglie.
22 be careful on all your paths.	22 L'uomo prudente non disprezza un parere; l'uomo alieno [da prudenza] e il superbo non teme nulla.
23 Whatever you do, be on your guard, for in this way you will keep the commandments.	23 Anche dopo d'aver agito, è seco stesso perplesso, e dalle sue [folli] imprese è accusato.
24 He who keeps the law preserves himself; and he who trusts in the LORD shall not be put to shame.	24 Figliuolo, non far nulla senza riflessione, e dopo il fatto non avrai a pentirti.
	25 Non andar per strada rovinosa, e non inciamperai ne' sassi; non t'affidare a una strada inesplorata, per non creare inciampo a te stesso.
	26 Guardati anche da' propri figliuoli, e sta' attento verso la tua gente di casa.
	27 In tutto quello che fai abbi fiducia nell'anima tua, perchè in questo sta l'osservanza de' comandamenti.
	28 Chi ha fiducia in Dio sta attento al comandamenti, e chi in lui confida, non avrà danno.
