Sirach 32

1 If you are chosen to preside at dinner, be not puffed up, but with the guests be as one of themselves; Take care of them first before you sit down;	1 Se ti hanno fatto capotavola, non esaltarti. Compòrtati con gli altri come uno di loro. Pensa a loro e poi mettiti a tavola;
2 when you have fulfilled your duty, then take your place, To share in their joy and win praise for your hospitality.	2 quando avrai compiuto il tuo dovere, accòmodati per far festa con loro e ricevere complimenti per le tue buone maniere.
3 Being older, you may talk; that is only your right, but temper your wisdom, not to disturb the singing.	3 Parla, o anziano, poiché ti si addice, ma con saggezza, e non disturbare la musica.
4 When wine is present, do not pour out discourse, and flaunt not your wisdom at the wrong time.	4 Quando c’è un’esecuzione non effonderti in chiacchiere, e non fare il sapiente fuori tempo.
5 Like a seal of carnelian in a setting of gold is a concert when wine is served.	5 Sigillo di rubino su ornamento d’oro è un concerto musicale in un banchetto.
6 Like a gold mounting with an emerald seal is string music with delicious wine.	6 Sigillo di smeraldo in una guarnizione d’oro è la melodia dei canti unita alla dolcezza del vino.
7 Young man, speak only when necessary, when they have asked you more than once;	7 Parla, o giovane, se c’è bisogno di te, non più di due volte se sei interrogato.
8 Be brief, but say much in those few words, be like the wise man, taciturn.	8 Compendia il tuo discorso, molte cose in poche parole; compòrtati come uno che sa e che tace a un tempo.
9 When among your elders be not forward, and with officials be not too insistent.	9 Fra i grandi non mostrarti presuntuoso, e dove vi sono anziani, non ciarlare troppo.
10 Like the lightning that flashes before a storm is the esteem that shines on modesty.	10 Prima del tuono viene la folgore, prima dell’uomo modesto viene la grazia.
11 When it is time to leave, tarry not; be off for home! There take your ease,	11 All’ora stabilita àlzati e non restare per ultimo, corri a casa e non indugiare.
12 And there enjoy doing as you wish, but without sin or words of pride.	12 Là divèrtiti e fa’ quello che ti piace, ma non peccare con parole arroganti.
13 Above all, give praise to your Creator, who showers his favors upon you.	13 Per tutto ciò benedici chi ti ha creato, chi ti colma dei suoi benefici.
14 He who would find God must accept discipline; he who seeks him obtains his request.	14 Chi teme il Signore ne accetta l’istruzione, chi lo ricerca di buon mattino trova il suo favore.
15 He who studies the law masters it, but the hypocrite finds it a trap.	15 Chi scruta la legge viene appagato, ma l’ipocrita vi trova motivo di scandalo.
16 His judgment is sound who fears the LORD; out of obscurity he draws forth a clear plan.	16 Quelli che temono il Signore sanno giudicare, i loro giudizi brillano come luce.
17 The sinner turns aside reproof and distorts the law to suit his purpose.	17 Il peccatore non accetta critiche e trova scuse a suo piacere.
18 The thoughtful man will not neglect direction; the proud and insolent man is deterred by nothing.	18 Chi è saggio non trascura la riflessione, l’empio e il superbo non provano alcun timore.
19 Do nothing without counsel, and then you need have no regrets.	19 Non fare nulla senza consiglio, non ti pentirai di averlo fatto.
20 Go not on a way that is set with snares, and let not the same thing trip you twice.	20 Non camminare in una via piena di ostacoli e non inciamperai in luoghi pietrosi.
21 Be not too sure even of smooth roads,	21 Non fidarti di una via senza inciampi,
22 be careful on all your paths.	22 guàrdati anche dai tuoi figli.
23 Whatever you do, be on your guard, for in this way you will keep the commandments.	23 In tutto ciò che fai abbi fiducia in te stesso, perché anche questo è osservare i comandamenti.
24 He who keeps the law preserves himself; and he who trusts in the LORD shall not be put to shame.	24 Chi crede alla legge è attento ai comandamenti, chi confida nel Signore non subirà alcun danno.
