New American Bible La Biblia
For all men were by nature foolish who were in ignorance of God, and who from the good things seen did not succeed in knowing him who is, and from studying the works did not discern the artisan;1 Son necios por naturaleza todos los hombres que han ignorado a Dios | y no han sido capaces de conocer al que es a partir de los bienes visibles, | ni de reconocer al artífice fijándose en sus obras,
But either fire, or wind, or the swift air, or the circuit of the stars, or the mighty water, or the luminaries of heaven, the governors of the world, they considered gods.2 sino que tuvieron por dioses al fuego, al viento, al aire ligero, | a la bóveda estrellada, al agua impetuosa | y a los luceros del cielo, regidores del mundo.
Now if out of joy in their beauty they thought them gods, let them know how far more excellent is the Lord than these; for the original source of beauty fashioned them.3 Si, cautivados por su hermosura, los creyeron dioses, | sepan cuánto los aventaja su Señor, | pues los creó el mismo autor de la belleza.
Or if they were struck by their might and energy, let them from these things realize how much more powerful is he who made them.4 Y si los asombró su poder y energía, | calculen cuánto más poderoso es quien los hizo,
For from the greatness and the beauty of created things their original author, by analogy, is seen.5 pues por la grandeza y hermosura de las criaturas | se descubre por analogía a su creador.
But yet, for these the blame is less; For they indeed have gone astray perhaps, though they seek God and wish to find him.6 Con todo, estos merecen un reproche menor, | pues a lo mejor andan extraviados, | buscando a Dios y queriéndolo encontrar.
For they search busily among his works, but are distracted by what they see, because the things seen are fair.7 Dan vueltas a sus obras, las investigan | y quedan seducidos por su apariencia, porque es hermoso lo que ven.
But again, not even these are pardonable.8 Pero ni siquiera estos son excusables,
For if they so far succeeded in knowledge that they could speculate about the world, how did they not more quickly find its LORD?9 porque, si fueron capaces de saber tanto | que pudieron escudriñar el universo, | ¿cómo no encontraron antes a su Señor?
But doomed are they, and in dead things are their hopes, who termed gods things made by human hands: Gold and silver, the product of art, and likenesses of beasts, or useless stone, the work of an ancient hand.10 Son, pues, unos infelices, con la esperanza puesta en cosas sin vida, | los que llamaron dioses a obras hechas por manos humanas: | oro y plata labrados con arte, representaciones de animales | o una piedra inútil, esculpida hace mucho tiempo.
A carpenter may saw out a suitable tree and skillfully scrape off all its bark, And deftly plying his art, produce something fit for daily use,11 Pongamos por ejemplo a un leñador: | tala un árbol de fácil manejo, | lo descorteza hábilmente y, trabajando con destreza, | fabrica un objeto útil para usos comunes.
and use up the refuse from his handiwork in preparing his food, and have his fill;12 Con los desechos de su trabajo | se prepara una comida que le deja satisfecho;
Then the good-for-nothing refuse from these remnants, crooked wood grown full of knots, he takes and carves to occupy his spare time. This wood he models with listless skill, and patterns it on the image of a man13 y con el último desecho que para nada sirve, | un palo torcido y lleno de nudos, | lo coge y lo talla en sus ratos de ocio; | y con destreza reposada lo modela | hasta sacar una imagen humana
or makes it resemble some worthless beast. When he has daubed it with red and crimsoned its surface with red stain, and daubed over every blemish in it,14 o la figura de cualquier vil animal. | Lo embadurna de minio, pinta su cuerpo de rojo | y recubre todos sus defectos.
He makes a fitting shrine for it and puts it on the wall, fastening it with a nail.15 Luego le prepara una hornacina digna | y lo coloca en la pared asegurándolo con clavos.
Thus lest it fall down he provides for it, knowing that it cannot help itself; for, truly, it is an image and needs help.16 Para que no se le caiga, toma sus precauciones, | sabiendo que no puede valerse por sí mismo, | pues es una imagen y necesita ayuda.
But when he prays about his goods or marriage or children, he is not ashamed to address the thing without a soul. And for vigor he invokes the powerless;17 Sin embargo, le reza por su hacienda, bodas e hijos, | sin avergonzarse de hablar con un ser inanimado; | pide la salud a quien está enfermo,
and for life he entreats the dead; And for aid he beseeches the wholly incompetent, and about travel, something that cannot even walk.18 ruega por la vida a un muerto, | solicita ayuda al más torpe | y un viaje feliz al que ni siquiera puede andar;
And for profit in business and success with his hands he asks facility of a thing with hands completely inert.19 y para las ganancias, las empresas y el éxito de sus tareas, | pide ayuda al que menos puede dársela.
