NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 For all men were by nature foolish who were in ignorance of God, and who from the good things seen did not succeed in knowing him who is, and from studying the works did not discern the artisan;	1 L’incapacité naturelle des humains se révèle dans leur ignorance de Dieu. Tout ce qu’ils admirent de valable ne les a pas amenés à connaître Celui-qui-est. Ils en sont restés aux œuvres et n’ont pas reconnu l’Artisan!
2 But either fire, or wind, or the swift air, or the circuit of the stars, or the mighty water, or the luminaries of heaven, the governors of the world, they considered gods.	2 Ils ont regardé comme des dieux gouverneurs du monde, aussi bien le feu que le vent, l’air léger, le firmament étoilé, l’eau impétueuse ou les luminaires du ciel.
3 Now if out of joy in their beauty they thought them gods, let them know how far more excellent is the Lord than these; for the original source of beauty fashioned them.	3 Fascinés par tant de beauté, ils les ont considérés comme des dieux; mais alors, n’auraient-ils pas dû savoir que leur souverain est plus grand encore? Car ce ne sont que les créatures de celui qui fait apparaître la beauté.
4 Or if they were struck by their might and energy, let them from these things realize how much more powerful is he who made them.	4 S’ils ont été impressionnés par leur force et leur activité, ils doivent comprendre que leur Créateur est encore plus puissant.
5 For from the greatness and the beauty of created things their original author, by analogy, is seen.	5 Car la grandeur et la beauté des créatures donnent quelque idée de celui qui leur a donné l’être.
6 But yet, for these the blame is less; For they indeed have gone astray perhaps, though they seek God and wish to find him.	6 Mais sans doute il ne faudrait pas trop blâmer ces gens-là: peut-être se sont-ils égarés alors qu’ils cherchaient Dieu et voulaient le trouver.
7 For they search busily among his works, but are distracted by what they see, because the things seen are fair.	7 Ils étudiaient les créatures qui les entouraient, et ce qu’ils voyaient était si beau qu’ils en sont restés à l’extérieur.
8 But again, not even these are pardonable.	8 Pourtant, même ainsi, ils ne sont pas excusables:
9 For if they so far succeeded in knowledge that they could speculate about the world, how did they not more quickly find its LORD?	9 s’ils ont été capables de scruter l’univers, comment n’ont-ils pas découvert d’abord celui qui en est le Maître?
10 But doomed are they, and in dead things are their hopes, who termed gods things made by human hands: Gold and silver, the product of art, and likenesses of beasts, or useless stone, the work of an ancient hand.	10 Combien plus à plaindre sont ceux qui mettent leur confiance en des choses mortes, et qui donnent le nom de dieux à ce qui est sorti de mains humaines: or, argent ciselé, figures d’animaux, et jusqu’à la pierre inutilisable qu’un beau jour quelqu’un a sculptée!
11 A carpenter may saw out a suitable tree and skillfully scrape off all its bark, And deftly plying his art, produce something fit for daily use,	11 Voici par exemple un bûcheron: il scie un arbre facile à transporter, il en racle soigneusement toute l’écorce, puis il le débite avec adresse et en fait un meuble quelconque d’usage courant.
12 and use up the refuse from his handiwork in preparing his food, and have his fill;	12 Les déchets de son travail, il les emploie pour cuire son repas et ainsi refaire ses forces.
13 Then the good-for-nothing refuse from these remnants, crooked wood grown full of knots, he takes and carves to occupy his spare time. This wood he models with listless skill, and patterns it on the image of a man	13 Parmi le peu de bois qui lui reste et qui n’est bon à rien, il aperçoit un morceau tordu et plein de nœuds; il le prend et le sculpte à ses moments perdus; il y met tout son art et lui donne forme humaine,
14 or makes it resemble some worthless beast. When he has daubed it with red and crimsoned its surface with red stain, and daubed over every blemish in it,	14 à moins qu’il ne représente un vulgaire animal. Il y met de la peinture rouge après avoir passé l’enduit pour recouvrir tous les défauts.
15 He makes a fitting shrine for it and puts it on the wall, fastening it with a nail.	15 Puis il lui prépare sur le mur une niche à sa taille, et il le fixe au mur avec des clous de fer.
16 Thus lest it fall down he provides for it, knowing that it cannot help itself; for, truly, it is an image and needs help.	16 Il a pris ses précautions pour qu’il ne tombe pas, car il sait bien que son dieu est incapable de s’aider lui-même: il faut l’aider car il n’est rien de plus qu’une image.
17 But when he prays about his goods or marriage or children, he is not ashamed to address the thing without a soul. And for vigor he invokes the powerless;	17 Et malgré cela, qu’il s’agisse de ses affaires, de son mariage ou de ses enfants, il ne rougit pas d’adresser la parole à cette chose sans vie. Pour sa santé, il invoque un objet sans force;
18 and for life he entreats the dead; And for aid he beseeches the wholly incompetent, and about travel, something that cannot even walk.	18 pour vivre, il rend hommage à ce qui ne vit pas; pour se faire aider il s’adresse à ce bois impuissant; avant un voyage, il invoque celui qui ne sait pas marcher!
19 And for profit in business and success with his hands he asks facility of a thing with hands completely inert.	19 Pour son gain, pour son travail, pour son art, il recourt à une statue dont les mains n’ont pas la moindre habileté.
