1 Be not hasty in your utterance and let not your heart be quick to make a promise in God's presence. God is in heaven and you are on earth; therefore let your words be few.	1 Non essere avventato nel parlare e il tuo cuore non abbia furia di proferir parole davanti a Dio. Dio è nel cielo e tu sei sulla terra, perciò sian pochi i tuoi discorsi.
2 For nightmares come with many cares, and a fool's utterance with many words.	2 Dai molti affanni vengono i sogni e nei molti discorsi si trova la stoltezza.
3 When you make a vow to God, delay not its fulfillment. For God has no pleasure in fools; fulfill what you have vowed.	3 Se hai fatto a Dio qualche voto, non ritardarne l'adempimento, perchè a lui dispiace la bugiarda e stolta promessa. Tu mantieni quanto hai promesso con voto;
4 You had better not make a vow than make it and not fulfill it.	4 perchè è molto meglio non far voti, che, fatto il voto, non adempire quanto si è promesso.
5 Let not your utterances make you guilty, and say not before his representative, "It was a mistake," lest God be angered by such words and destroy the works of your hands.	5 Non permettere alla tua bocca di renderti colpevole, e non dire dinanzi all'angelo: « Non ci fu avvertenza », chè Dio, sdegnato per le tue parole, non distrugga tutte le opere delle tue mani.
6 Rather, fear God!	6 Dove ci sono molti sogni, vi son moltissime vanità e chiacchiere senza numero; ma tu temi Dio.
7 If you see oppression of the poor, and violation of rights and justice in the realm, do not be shocked by the fact, for the high official has another higher than he watching him and above these are others higher still--.	7 Se vedrai oppressi i miserabili e violato il diritto e la giustizia a rovescio nel paese, non ti meravigliare di ciò, perchè chi sta in alto ci ha un altro più alto di lui, e sopra questi ve ne sono altri ancora più in alto,
8 Yet an advantage for a country in every respect is a king for the arable land.	8 e di più v'è il re che comanda a tutta la terra a lui soggetta.
9 The covetous man is never satisfied with money, and the lover of wealth reaps no fruit from it; so this too is vanity.	9 L'avaro non sarà mai sazio di danaro, e chi ama le ricchezze non ne caverà alcun frutto. Anche questo è vanità.
10 Where there are great riches, there are also many to devour them. Of what use are they to the owner except to feast his eyes upon?	10 Dove son molte ricchezze, vi sono anche molti a mangiarle, e che utile ne ha il padrone, oltre quello di starle a guardare coi propri occhi?
11 Sleep is sweet to the laboring man, whether he eats little or much, but the rich man's abundance allows him no sleep.	11 Dolce è il sonno del lavoratore, poco o molto ch'ei mangi; ma la sazietà non lascia dormire il ricco.
12 This is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: riches kept by their owner to his hurt.	12 C'è anche un altro disgraziatissimo guaio che io ho visto sotto il sole: le ricchezze accumulate a rovina del loro padrone.
13 Should the riches be lost through some misfortune, he may have a son when he is without means.	13 Se ne vanno in fumo per terribile sventura; egli ha messo al mondo un figlio che sarà in estrema miseria;
14 As he came forth from his mother's womb, so again shall he depart, naked as he came, having nothing from his labor that he can carry in his hand.	14 come nudo è uscito dal seno della madre, così nudo vi ritornerà, e di tutte le sue fatiche non porterà seco niente.
15 This too is a grievous evil, that he goes just as he came. What then does it profit him to toil for wind?	15 Miseria certo degna di compassione! Come venne, così partirà. E che gli giova l'essersi affaticato per del vento?
16 All the days of his life are passed in gloom and sorrow, under great vexation, sickness and wrath.	16 Per tutti i giorni della sua vita egli mangiò tra le tenebre, tra molti affanni, nell'angustia, nella tristezza.
17 Here is what I recognize as good: it is well for a man to eat and drink and enjoy all the fruits of his labor under the sun during the limited days of the life which God gives him; for this is his lot.	17 Quindi mi sembra bene che uno mangi e beva e goda con gioia i frutti della sua fatica, che ha sopportata sotto il sole per tutti i giorni della sua vita, assegnatigli da Dio. E questa è la sua sorte.
18 Any man to whom God gives riches and property, and grants power to partake of them, so that he receives his lot and finds joy in the fruits of his toil, has a gift from God.	18 Or quando Dio dà a un uomo ricchezze e beni, gli dà anche facoltà di mangiarne, di goderne la sua parte, di gioire del frutto del suo lavoro: questo è dono di Dio.
19 For he will hardly dwell on the shortness of his life, because God lets him busy himself with the joy of his heart.	19 Allora egli non si ricorderà troppo dei giorni della sua vita, perchè Dio gl'inonda il cuore di gioia.
