1 Be not hasty in your utterance and let not your heart be quick to make a promise in God's presence. God is in heaven and you are on earth; therefore let your words be few.	1 Non essere precipitoso con la bocca e il tuo cuore non si affretti a proferire parole davanti a Dio, perché Dio è in cielo e tu sei sulla terra; perciò siano poche le tue parole.
2 For nightmares come with many cares, and a fool's utterance with many words.	2 Infatti dalle molte preoccupazioni vengono i sogni, e dalle molte chiacchiere il discorso dello stolto.
3 When you make a vow to God, delay not its fulfillment. For God has no pleasure in fools; fulfill what you have vowed.	3 Quando hai fatto un voto a Dio, non tardare a soddisfarlo, perché a lui non piace il comportamento degli stolti: adempi quello che hai promesso.
4 You had better not make a vow than make it and not fulfill it.	4 È meglio non fare voti che farli e poi non mantenerli.
5 Let not your utterances make you guilty, and say not before his representative, "It was a mistake," lest God be angered by such words and destroy the works of your hands.	5 Non permettere alla tua bocca di renderti colpevole e davanti al suo messaggero non dire che è stata una inavvertenza, perché Dio non abbia ad adirarsi per le tue parole e distrugga l’opera delle tue mani.
6 Rather, fear God!	6 Poiché dai molti sogni provengono molte illusioni e tante parole. Tu, dunque, temi Dio!
7 If you see oppression of the poor, and violation of rights and justice in the realm, do not be shocked by the fact, for the high official has another higher than he watching him and above these are others higher still--.	7 Se nella provincia vedi il povero oppresso e il diritto e la giustizia calpestati, non ti meravigliare di questo, poiché sopra un’autorità veglia un’altra superiore e sopra di loro un’altra ancora più alta.
8 Yet an advantage for a country in every respect is a king for the arable land.	8 In ogni caso, la terra è a profitto di tutti, ma è il re a servirsi della campagna.
9 The covetous man is never satisfied with money, and the lover of wealth reaps no fruit from it; so this too is vanity.	9 Chi ama il denaro non è mai sazio di denaro e chi ama la ricchezza non ha mai entrate sufficienti. Anche questo è vanità.
10 Where there are great riches, there are also many to devour them. Of what use are they to the owner except to feast his eyes upon?	10 Con il crescere delle ricchezze aumentano i profittatori e quale soddisfazione ne riceve il padrone se non di vederle con gli occhi?
11 Sleep is sweet to the laboring man, whether he eats little or much, but the rich man's abundance allows him no sleep.	11 Dolce è il sonno del lavoratore, poco o molto che mangi; ma la sazietà del ricco non lo lascia dormire.
12 This is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: riches kept by their owner to his hurt.	12 Un altro brutto guaio ho visto sotto il sole: ricchezze custodite dal padrone a suo danno.
13 Should the riches be lost through some misfortune, he may have a son when he is without means.	13 Se ne vanno in fumo queste ricchezze per un cattivo affare e il figlio che gli è nato non ha nulla nelle mani.
14 As he came forth from his mother's womb, so again shall he depart, naked as he came, having nothing from his labor that he can carry in his hand.	14 Come è uscito dal grembo di sua madre, nudo ancora se ne andrà come era venuto, e dalle sue fatiche non ricaverà nulla da portare con sé.
15 This too is a grievous evil, that he goes just as he came. What then does it profit him to toil for wind?	15 Anche questo è un brutto guaio: che se ne vada proprio come è venuto. Quale profitto ricava dall’avere gettato le sue fatiche al vento?
16 All the days of his life are passed in gloom and sorrow, under great vexation, sickness and wrath.	16 Tutti i giorni della sua vita li ha passati nell’oscurità, fra molti fastidi, malanni e crucci.
17 Here is what I recognize as good: it is well for a man to eat and drink and enjoy all the fruits of his labor under the sun during the limited days of the life which God gives him; for this is his lot.	17 Ecco quello che io ritengo buono e bello per l’uomo: è meglio mangiare e bere e godere dei beni per ogni fatica sopportata sotto il sole, nei pochi giorni di vita che Dio gli dà, perché questa è la sua parte.
18 Any man to whom God gives riches and property, and grants power to partake of them, so that he receives his lot and finds joy in the fruits of his toil, has a gift from God.	18 Inoltre ad ogni uomo, al quale Dio concede ricchezze e beni, egli dà facoltà di mangiarne, prendere la sua parte e godere della sua fatica: anche questo è dono di Dio.
19 For he will hardly dwell on the shortness of his life, because God lets him busy himself with the joy of his heart.	19 Egli infatti non penserà troppo ai giorni della sua vita, poiché Dio lo occupa con la gioia del suo cuore.
