For the leader; according to Mahalath. A maskil of David. | 1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. |
Fools say in their hearts, "There is no God." Their deeds are loathsome and corrupt; not one does what is right. | 2 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. |
God looks down from heaven upon the human race, To see if even one is wise, if even one seeks God. | 3 Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. |
All have gone astray; all alike are perverse. Not one does what is right, not even one. | 4 Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread: they have not called upon God. |
Will these evildoers never learn? They devour my people as they devour bread; they do not call upon God. | 5 There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath despised them. |
They have good reason to fear, though now they do not fear. For God will certainly scatter the bones of the godless. They will surely be put to shame, for God has rejected them. | 6 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! When God bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad. |
Oh, that from Zion might come the deliverance of Israel, That Jacob may rejoice and Israel be glad when God restores the people! |
