1 Then Zophar the Naamathite spoke and said:	1 Da antwortete Zofar von Naama und sprach:
2 and because of this I am disturbed. So now my thoughts provide me with an answer, and from my understanding a spirit gives me a reply.	2 Darum drängt mich meine Erregung zur Antwort und deswegen stürmt es in mir.
3 A rebuke which puts me to shame I hear,	3 Schmähende Rüge muss ich hören, doch der Geist meiner Einsicht lässt mich entgegnen.
4 Do you not know this from olden time, since man was placed upon the earth,	4 Weißt du das nicht von Urzeit her, seit Gott Menschen auf die Erde gesetzt hat:
5 That the triumph of the wicked is short and the joy of the impious but for a moment?	5 dass kurz nur währt der Frevler Jubel, einen Augenblick nur des Ruchlosen Freude?
6 Though his pride mount up to the heavens and his head reach to the clouds,	6 Steigt auch sein Übermut zum Himmel und rührt sein Kopf bis ans Gewölk,
7 Yet he perishes forever like the fuel of his fire, and the onlookers say, "Where is he?"	7 wie sein Kot vergeht er doch für immer; die ihn gesehen haben, werden fragen: Wo ist er?
8 Like a dream he takes flight and is not found again; he fades away like a vision of the night.	8 Wie ein Traum verfliegt er und ist nicht mehr zu finden, wird weggescheucht wie ein Gesicht der Nacht.
9 The eye which saw him does so no more; nor shall his dwelling again behold him.	9 Das Auge, das ihn sah, erblickt ihn nicht wieder, seine Stätte schaut ihn nie mehr.
10 and his hands shall yield up his riches.	10 Seine Söhne müssen bei Armen betteln, ihre Hände geben seine Habe zurück.
11 Though his frame is full of youthful vigor, this shall lie with him in the dust.	11 Strotzen von Jugendkraft auch seine Glieder, sie betten sich doch mit ihm in den Staub.
12 Though wickedness is sweet in his mouth, and he hides it under his tongue,	12 Schmeckt süß das Böse in seinem Mund, birgt er es unter seiner Zunge,
13 Though he retains it and will not let it go but keeps it still within his mouth,	13 spart er es auf und will nicht von ihm lassen, hält er es auch tief in seinem Gaumen fest,
14 Yet in his stomach the food shall turn; it shall be venom of asps inside him.	14 in seinem Innern verwandelt sich die Speise, sie wird in seinem Leib ihm zu Natterngift.
15 The riches he swallowed he shall disgorge; God shall compel his belly to disown them.	15 Das Gut, das er verschlungen hat, speit er aus; aus seinem Leib treibt Gott es heraus.
16 The poison of asps he shall drink in; the viper's fangs shall slay him.	16 Das Gift von Nattern saugt er ein, es tötet ihn der Viper Zunge.
17 He shall see no streams of oil, no torrents of honey or milk.	17 Nicht darf er Bäche von Öl schauen, nicht Flüsse, die von Milch und Honig fließen.
18 Restoring his gains, he shall not enjoy them; though his wealth increases, he shall not rejoice.	18 Zurückgeben muss er seinen Gewinn, genießen darf er ihn nicht, darf sich nicht freuen am ertauschten Gut.
19 Because he has oppressed the poor, and stolen a patrimony he had not built up,	19 Denn Arme schlug er nieder, ließ sie liegen, raubte das Haus, das er nicht gebaut.
20 Though he has known no quiet in his greed, his treasures shall not save him.	20 Denn kein Genug kennt er in seinem Bauch, drum entkommt er nicht mit seinen Schätzen.
21 Therefore his prosperity shall not endure,	21 Nichts entgeht seinem Fraß, darum hält sein Glück auch nicht stand.
22 When he abounds to overflowing, he shall be brought into straits, and nought shall be left of his goods.	22 Trotz vollen Überflusses kommt er in Not, die ganze Wucht des Elends fällt ihn an.
23 God shall send against him the fury of his wrath and rain down his missiles of war upon him.	23 Und so geschieht es: Um des Frevlers Bauch zu füllen, lässt Gott auf ihn die Gluten seines Zornes los, lässt auf ihn regnen seine Schläge.
24 Should he escape the iron weapon, the bow of bronze shall pierce him through;	24 Flieht er vor dem Eisenpanzer, durchbohrt ihn der Bogen aus Bronze.
25 The dart shall come out of his back; terrors shall fall upon him.	25 In den Rücken fährt ihm Gottes Geschoss, ein Blitz in seine Galle. Schrecken gehen über ihn hin.
26 Complete darkness is in store for him; the fire which shall consume him needs not to be fanned.	26 Nur finsteres Unheil ist für ihn aufbewahrt, Feuer, von niemand entfacht, verzehrt ihn, frisst noch den letzten Mann in seinem Zelt.
27 The heavens shall reveal his guilt, and the earth shall rise up against him.	27 Der Himmel enthüllt seine Schuld, die Erde bäumt sich gegen ihn auf.
28 The flood shall sweep away his house with the waters that run off in the day of God's anger.	28 Die Flut wälzt sein Haus hinweg, Wasserströme am Tag seines Zorns.
29 This is the portion of a wicked man, and the heritage appointed him by God.	29 Das ist des Frevlers Anteil von Gott, das Erbe, das Gott ihm zuspricht.
