1 You will find in the records, not only that Jeremiah the prophet ordered the deportees to take some of the aforementioned fire with them,	1 Se encuentra en los documentos que el profeta Jeremías mandó a los deportados recoger fuego, como queda dicho;
2 but also that the prophet, in giving them the law, admonished them not to forget the commandments of the Lord or be led astray in their thoughts, when seeing the gold and silver idols and their ornaments.	2 y que el profeta, después de darles la ley, les ordenó que no se olvidaran de los preceptos del Señor ni se desviaran en sus pensamientos al ver ídolos de oro y plata, revestidos de gala.
3 With other similar words he urged them not to let the law depart from their hearts.	3 Entre otros consejos, les exhortaba a no alejar de su corazón la ley.
4 The same document also tells how the prophet, following a divine revelation, ordered that the tent and the ark should accompany him and how he went off to the mountain which Moses climbed to see God's inheritance.	4 Se decía también en el escrito cómo el profeta, avisado por un oráculo, mandó llevar consigo la Tienda y el Arca; y que salió hacia el monte donde Moisés había subido para contemplar la heredad de Dios.
5 When Jeremiah arrived there, he found a room in a cave in which he put the tent, the ark, and the altar of incense; then he blocked up the entrance.	5 Y cuando Jeremías llegó, encontró una estancia en forma de cueva; metió allí la Tienda, el Arca y el Altar del incienso, y tapó la entrada.
6 Some of those who followed him came up intending to mark the path, but they could not find it.	6 Algunos de sus acompañantes volvieron para marcar el camino, pero no pudieron encontrarlo.
7 When Jeremiah heard of this, he reproved them: "The place is to remain unknown until God gathers his people together again and shows them mercy.	7 En cuanto Jeremías lo supo, les reprendió diciéndoles: «Este lugar quedará desconocido hasta que Dios reúna a la comunidad del pueblo y se vuelva propicio.
8 Then the Lord will disclose these things, and the glory of the Lord will be seen in the cloud, just as it appeared in the time of Moses and when Solomon prayed that the Place might be gloriously sanctified."	8 Entonces el Señor mostrará todo esto y se verá la Gloria del Señor y la Nube, como aparecía en tiempo de Moisés, y cuando Salomón rogó que el lugar fuera solemnemente consagrado».
9 It is also related how Solomon in his wisdom offered a sacrifice at the dedication and the completion of the temple.	9 Se contaba también cómo Salomón, dotado de sabiduría, ofreció el sacrificio de dedicación cuando se inauguró el templo.
10 Just as Moses prayed to the Lord and fire descended from the sky and consumed the sacrifices, so Solomon also prayed and fire came down and burned up the holocausts.	10 Lo mismo que Moisés oró al Señor y bajó fuego del cielo que devoró los sacrificios, así también oró Salomón y bajó fuego que consumió los holocaustos.
11 Moses had said, "Because it had not been eaten, the sin offering was burned up."	11 Moisés había dicho: «La víctima por el pecado ha sido consumida por no haber sido comida».
12 Solomon also celebrated the feast in the same way for eight days.	12 Salomón celebró igualmente los ocho días de fiesta.
13 Besides these things, it is also told in the records and in Nehemiah's Memoirs how he collected the books about the kings, the writings of the prophets and of David, and the royal letters about sacred offerings.	13 Estos mismos relatos se contenían también en los archivos y en las memorias del tiempo de Nehemías; y cómo este, para fundar una biblioteca, reunió los libros referentes a los reyes y a los profetas, los de David y las cartas de los reyes acerca de las ofrendas.
14 In like manner Judas also collected for us the books that had been scattered because of the war, and we now have them in our possession.	14 De igual modo Judas reunió todos los libros dispersos a causa de la guerra que hemos padecido, y ahora los tenemos a mano.
15 If you need them, send messengers to get them for you.	15 Por tanto, si tenéis necesidad de ellos, enviadnos a alguien que os los lleve.
16 As we are about to celebrate the feast of the purification of the temple, we are writing to you requesting you also to please celebrate the feast.	16 A punto ya de celebrar la fiesta de la Purificación, os escribimos para que tengáis a bien celebrar estos días.
17 It is God who has saved all his people and has restored to all of them their heritage, the kingdom, the priesthood, and the sacred rites,	17 El Dios que ha salvado a todo su pueblo y que a todos ha devuelto la heredad, el reino, el sacerdocio y el santuario,
18 as he promised through the law. We trust in God, that he will soon have mercy on us and gather us together from everywhere under the heavens to his holy Place, for he has rescued us from great perils and has purified his Place.	18 como había prometido por la ley, el mismo Dios, así esperamos, se apiadará pronto de nosotros y nos reunirá en el lugar santo desde todas las regiones bajo el cielo; pues nos ha librado de grandes males y ha purificado el lugar.
19 This is the story of Judas Maccabeus and his brothers, of the purification of the great temple, the dedication of the altar,	19 la historia de Judas Macabeo y de sus hermanos, la Purificación del templo más importante, la dedicación del altar,
20 the campaigns against Antiochus Epiphanes and his son Eupator,	20 las guerras contra Antíoco Epífanes y su hijo Eupátor,
21 and of the heavenly manifestations accorded to the heroes who fought bravely for Judaism, so that, few as they were, they seized the whole land, put to flight the barbarian hordes,	21 y las manifestaciones celestiales a los bravos combatientes en favor del judaísmo; de suerte que, aun siendo pocos, saquearon toda la región, ahuyentaron a las hordas bárbaras,

24 In view of the flood of statistics, and the difficulties encountered by those who wish to plunge into historical narratives where the material is abundant,	24 Porque, al considerar la cantidad de números y la dificultad que la amplitud de la materia plantea a quienes deseen sumergirse en los relatos de la historia,
25 we have aimed to please those who prefer simple reading, as well as to make it easy for the studious who wish to commit things to memory, and to be helpful to all.	25 hemos procurado hacerlos atractivos a los que quieren leer, accesibles a los que gustan retener lo leído en la memoria, y útiles a cualquiera que los leyere.
26 For us who have taken upon ourselves the labor of making this digest, the task, far from being easy, is one of sweat and of sleepless nights,	26 Para nosotros, que nos hemos encargado de la fatigosa labor de este resumen, no ha sido fácil la tarea, sino de sudores y desvelos;
27 just as the preparation of a festive banquet is no light matter for one who thus seeks to give enjoyment to others. Similarly, to win the gratitude of many we will gladly endure these inconveniences,	27 como tampoco le resulta cómodo el trabajo a quien prepara un banquete y tiene que atender al gusto ajeno. Sin embargo, esperando la gratitud de muchos, soportamos con gusto esta fatiga,
28 while we leave the responsibility for exact details to the original author, and confine our efforts to giving only a summary outline.	28 dejando al historiador la tarea de precisar cada suceso, mientras nosotros nos esforzamos por seguir las normas propias de un resumen.
29 As the architect of a new house must give his attention to the whole structure, while the man who undertakes the decoration and the frescoes has only to concern himself with what is needed for ornamentation, so I think it is with us.	29 Pues así como al arquitecto de una casa nueva corresponde la preocupación por la estructura entera; y, en cambio, al decorador y pintor, el cuidado por la ornamentación, lo mismo puede decirse en nuestro caso;
30 To enter into questions and examine them thoroughly from all sides is the task of the professional historian;	30 profundizar, contrastar las cuestiones y examinar al detalle corresponde a quien compone la historia;
31 but the man who is making an adaptation should be allowed to aim at brevity of expression and to omit detailed treatment of the matter.	31 pero al divulgador le compete una exposición concisa, renunciando al tratamiento exhaustivo.
32 Here, then, we shall begin our account without further ado; it would be nonsense to write a long preface to a story and then abbreviate the story itself.	32 Comencemos, pues, desde ahora el relato, tras abundar tanto en los preliminares; pues sería absurdo alargar el prólogo y abreviar la historia.
