NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
The LORD then told Moses, "Say to Aaron: Stretch out your hand and your staff over the streams and canals and pools, to make frogs overrun the land of Egypt."1 Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen: “ Dic ad Aaron: Extende ma num tuam cum baculo tuo super fluvios, super rivos ac paludes et educ ranas super terram Aegypti ”.
Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt.2 Et extendit Aaron manum super aquas Aegypti, et ascenderunt ranae operueruntque terram Aegypti.
But the magicians did the same by their magic arts. They, too, made frogs overrun the land of Egypt.3 Fecerunt autem et malefici per incantationes suas similiter eduxeruntque ranas super terram Aegypti.
Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Pray the LORD to remove the frogs from me and my subjects, and I will let the people go to offer sacrifice to the LORD."4 Vocavit autem pharao Moysen et Aaron et dixit: “ Orate Dominum, ut auferat ranas a me et a populo meo, et dimittam populum, ut sacrificet Domino ”.
Moses answered Pharaoh, "Do me the favor of appointing the time when I am to pray for you and your servants and your subjects, that the frogs may be taken away from you and your houses and be left only in the river."5 Dixitque Moyses ad pharaonem: “ Constitue mihi, quando deprecer pro te et pro servis et pro populo tuo, ut abigantur ranae a te et a domo tua et tantum in flumine remaneant ”.
"Tomorrow," said Pharaoh. Then Moses replied, "It shall be as you have said, so that you may learn that there is none like the LORD, our God.6 Qui respondit: “ Cras ”. At ille: “ Iuxta verbum, inquit, tuum faciam, ut scias quoniam non est sicut Dominus Deus noster.
The frogs shall leave you and your houses, your servants and your subjects; only in the river shall they be left."7 Et recedent ranae a te et a domo tua et a servis tuis et a populo tuo; tantum in flumine remanebunt ”.
After Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh's presence, Moses implored the LORD to fulfill the promise he had made to Pharaoh about the frogs;8 Egressique sunt Moyses et Aaron a pharaone; et clamavit Moyses ad Dominum pro sponsione ranarum, quam condixerat pharaoni.
and the LORD did as Moses had asked. The frogs in the houses and courtyards and fields died off.9 Fecitque Dominus iuxta verbum Moysi, et mortuae sunt ranae de domibus et de villis et de agris;
Heaps and heaps of them were gathered up, and there was a stench in the land.10 congregaveruntque eas in immensos aggeres, et computruit terra.
But when Pharaoh saw that there was a respite, he became obdurate and would not listen to them, just as the LORD had foretold.11 Videns autem pharao quod data esset requies, ingravavit cor suum et non audivit eos, sicut dixerat Dominus.
Thereupon the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron to stretch out his staff and strike the dust of the earth, that it may be turned into gnats throughout the land of Egypt."12 Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen: “ Loquere ad Aaron: Extende virgam tuam et percute pulverem terrae, et sint scinifes in universa terra Aegypti ”.
They did so. Aaron stretched out his hand, and with his staff he struck the dust of the earth, and gnats came upon man and beast. The dust of the earth was turned into gnats throughout the land of Egypt.13 Feceruntque ita; et extendit Aaron manum virgam tenens percussitque pulverem terrae. Et facti sunt scinifes in hominibus et in iumentis; omnis pulvis terrae versus est in scinifes per totam terram Aegypti.
Though the magicians tried to bring forth gnats by their magic arts, they could not do so. As the gnats infested man and beast,14 Feceruntque similiter malefici incantationibus suis, ut educerent scinifes; et non potuerunt. Erantque scinifes tam in hominibus quam in iumentis;
the magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." Yet Pharaoh remained obstinate and would not listen to them, just as the LORD had foretold.15 et dixerunt malefici ad pharaonem: “ Digitus Dei est hic ”. Induratumque est cor pharaonis et non audivit eos, sicut praeceperat Dominus.
Again the LORD told Moses, "Early tomorrow morning present yourself to Pharaoh when he goes forth to the water, and say to him: Thus says the LORD: Let my people go to worship me.16 Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen: “ Consurge diluculo et sta coram pharaone. Egredietur enim ad aquas, et dices ad eum: Haec dicit Dominus: Dimitte populum meum, ut sacrificet mihi.
If you will not let my people go, I warn you, I will loose swarms of flies upon you and your servants and your subjects and your houses. The houses of the Egyptians and the very ground on which they stand shall be filled with swarms of flies.17 Quod si non dimiseris eum, ecce ego immittam in te et in servos tuos et in populum tuum et in domos tuas omne genus muscarum; et implebuntur domus Aegyptiorum muscis et etiam humus, in qua fuerint.
But on that day I will make an exception of the land of Goshen: there shall be no flies where my people dwell, that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.18 Et segregabo in die illa terram Gessen, in qua populus meus est, ut non sint ibi muscae, et scias quoniam ego Dominus in medio terrae;
I will make this distinction between my people and your people. This sign shall take place tomorrow."19 ponamque divi sionem inter populum meum et populum tuum; cras erit signum istud ”.
This the LORD did. Thick swarms of flies entered the house of Pharaoh and the houses of his servants; throughout Egypt the land was infested with flies.20 Fecitque Dominus ita; et venit musca gravissima in domos pharaonis et servorum eius et in omnem terram Aegypti, corruptaque est terra ab huiuscemodi muscis.
Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said to them, "Go and offer sacrifice to your God in this land."21 Vocavitque pharao Moysen et Aaron et ait eis: “ Ite, sacrificate Deo vestro in terra ”.
But Moses replied, "It is not right to do so, for the sacrifices we offer to the LORD, our God, are an abomination to the Egyptians. If before their very eyes we offer sacrifices which are an abomination to them, will not the Egyptians stone us?22 Et ait Moyses: “ Non potest ita fieri: abominationes enim Aegyptiorum immolabimus Domino Deo nostro; quod si mactaverimus ea, quae colunt Aegyptii, coram eis, lapidibus nos obruent.
We must go a three days' journey in the desert to offer sacrifice to the LORD, our God, as he commands us."23 Viam trium dierum pergemus in solitudinem et sacrificabimus Domino Deo nostro, sicut praecepit nobis ”.
"Well, then," said Pharaoh, "I will let you go to offer sacrifice to the LORD, your God, in the desert, provided that you do not go too far away and that you pray for me."24 Dixitque pharao: “ Ego dimittam vos, ut sacrificetis Domino Deo vestro in deserto, verumtamen longius ne abeatis; rogate pro me ”.
Moses answered, "As soon as I leave your presence I will pray to the LORD that the flies may depart tomorrow from Pharaoh and his servants and his subjects. Pharaoh, however, must not play false again by refusing to let the people go to offer sacrifice to the LORD."25 Et ait Moyses: “ Egressus a te, orabo Dominum, et recedet musca a pharaone et a servis suis et a populo eius cras; verumtamen noli ultra fallere, ut non dimittas populum sacrificare Domino ”.
When Moses left Pharaoh's presence, he prayed to the LORD;26 Egressusque Moyses a pharaone oravit Dominum;
and the LORD did as Moses had asked. He removed the flies from Pharaoh and his servants and subjects. Not one remained.27 qui fecit iuxta verbum illius et abstulit muscas a pharaone et a servis suis et a populo eius; non superfuit ne una quidem.
But once more Pharaoh became obdurate and would not let the people go.28 Et ingravatum est cor pharaonis, ita ut ne hac quidem vice dimitteret populum.
