1 "These are the rules you shall lay before them.	1 Queste sono le norme che tu esporrai loro.
2 When you purchase a Hebrew slave, he is to serve you for six years, but in the seventh year he shall be given his freedom without cost.	2 Quando tu avrai acquistato uno schiavo ebreo, egli ti servirà per sei anni e nel settimo potrà andarsene libero, senza riscatto.
3 If he comes into service alone, he shall leave alone; if he comes with a wife, his wife shall leave with him.	3 Se è venuto solo, solo se ne andrà; se era coniugato, sua moglie se ne andrà con lui.
4 But if his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall remain the master's property and the man shall leave alone.	4 Se il suo padrone gli ha dato moglie e questa gli ha partorito figli o figlie, la donna e i suoi figli saranno proprietà del padrone, ed egli se ne andrà solo.
5 If, however, the slave declares, 'I am devoted to my master and my wife and children; I will not go free,'	5 Ma se lo schiavo dice: “Io sono affezionato al mio padrone, a mia moglie, ai miei figli, non voglio andarmene libero”,
6 his master shall bring him to God and there, at the door or doorpost, he shall pierce his ear with an awl, thus keeping him as his slave forever.	6 allora il suo padrone lo condurrà davanti a Dio, lo farà accostare al battente o allo stipite della porta e gli forerà l’orecchio con la lesina, e quello resterà suo schiavo per sempre.
7 "When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go free as male slaves do.	7 Quando un uomo venderà la figlia come schiava, ella non se ne andrà come se ne vanno gli schiavi.
8 But if her master, who had destined her for himself, dislikes her, he shall let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to a foreigner, since he has broken faith with her.	8 Se lei non piace al padrone, che perciò non la destina a sé in moglie, la farà riscattare. In ogni caso egli non può venderla a gente straniera, agendo con frode verso di lei.
9 If he destines her for his son, he shall treat her like a daughter.	9 Se egli la vuol destinare in moglie al proprio figlio, si comporterà nei suoi riguardi secondo il diritto delle figlie.
10 If he takes another wife, he shall not withhold her food, her clothing, or her conjugal rights.	10 Se egli prende in moglie un’altra, non diminuirà alla prima il nutrimento, il vestiario, la coabitazione.
11 If he does not grant her these three things, she shall be given her freedom absolutely, without cost to her.	11 Se egli non le fornisce queste tre cose, lei potrà andarsene, senza che sia pagato il prezzo del riscatto.
12 "Whoever strikes a man a mortal blow must be put to death.	12 Colui che colpisce un uomo causandone la morte, sarà messo a morte.
13 He, however, who did not hunt a man down, but caused his death by an act of God, may flee to a place which I will set apart for this purpose.	13 Se però non ha teso insidia, ma Dio glielo ha fatto incontrare, io ti fisserò un luogo dove potrà rifugiarsi.
14 But when a man kills another after maliciously scheming to do so, you must take him even from my altar and put him to death.	14 Ma se un uomo aveva premeditato di uccidere il suo prossimo con inganno, allora lo strapperai anche dal mio altare, perché sia messo a morte.
15 Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death.	15 Colui che percuote suo padre o sua madre, sarà messo a morte.
16 "A kidnaper, whether he sells his victim or still has him when caught, shall be put to death.	16 Colui che rapisce un uomo, sia che lo venda sia che lo si trovi ancora in mano sua, sarà messo a morte.
17 "Whoever curses his father or mother shall be put to death.	17 Colui che maledice suo padre o sua madre, sarà messo a morte.
18 "When men quarrel and one strikes the other with a stone or with his fist, not mortally, but enough to put him in bed,	18 Quando alcuni uomini litigano e uno colpisce il suo prossimo con una pietra o con il pugno e questi non muore, ma deve mettersi a letto,
19 the one who struck the blow shall be acquitted, provided the other can get up and walk around with the help of his staff. Still, he must compensate him for his enforced idleness and provide for his complete cure.	19 se poi si alza ed esce con il bastone, chi lo ha colpito sarà ritenuto innocente, ma dovrà pagare il riposo forzato e assicurargli le cure.
20 "When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished.	20 Quando un uomo colpisce con il bastone il suo schiavo o la sua schiava e gli muore sotto le sue mani, si deve fare vendetta.
21 If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property.	21 Ma se sopravvive un giorno o due, non sarà vendicato, perché è suo denaro.
22 "When men have a fight and hurt a pregnant woman, so that she suffers a miscarriage, but no further injury, the guilty one shall be fined as much as the woman's husband demands of him, and he shall pay in the presence of the judges.	22 Quando alcuni uomini litigano e urtano una donna incinta, così da farla abortire, se non vi è altra disgrazia, si esigerà un’ammenda, secondo quanto imporrà il marito della donna, e il colpevole pagherà attraverso un arbitrato.
23 But if injury ensues, you shall give life for life,	23 Ma se segue una disgrazia, allora pagherai vita per vita:
24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,	24 occhio per occhio, dente per dente, mano per mano, piede per piede,
25 burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.	25 bruciatura per bruciatura, ferita per ferita, livido per livido.
26 "When a man strikes his male or female slave in the eye and destroys the use of the eye, he shall let the slave go free in compensation for the eye.	26 Quando un uomo colpisce l’occhio del suo schiavo o della sua schiava e lo acceca, darà loro la libertà in compenso dell’occhio.
27 If he knocks out a tooth of his male or female slave, he shall let the slave go free in compensation for the tooth.	27 Se fa cadere il dente del suo schiavo o della sua schiava, darà loro la libertà in compenso del dente.
28 "When an ox gores a man or a woman to death, the ox must be stoned; its flesh may not be eaten. The owner of the ox, however, shall go unpunished.	28 Quando un bue cozza con le corna contro un uomo o una donna e ne segue la morte, il bue sarà lapidato e non se ne mangerà la carne. Però il proprietario del bue è innocente.
29 But if an ox was previously in the habit of goring people and its owner, though warned, would not keep it in; should it then kill a man or a woman, not only must the ox be stoned, but its owner also must be put to death.	29 Ma se il bue era solito cozzare con le corna già prima e il padrone era stato avvisato e non lo aveva custodito, se ha causato la morte di un uomo o di una donna, il bue sarà lapidato e anche il suo padrone dev’essere messo a morte.
30 If, however, a fine is imposed on him, he must pay in ransom for his life whatever amount is imposed on him.	30 Se invece gli viene imposto un risarcimento, egli pagherà il riscatto della propria vita, secondo quanto gli verrà imposto.
31 This law applies if it is a boy or a girl that the ox gores.	31 Se cozza con le corna contro un figlio o se cozza contro una figlia, si procederà nella stessa maniera.
32 But if it is a male or a female slave that it gores, he must pay the owner of the slave thirty shekels of silver, and the ox must be stoned.	32 Se il bue colpisce con le corna uno schiavo o una schiava, si darà al suo padrone del denaro, trenta sicli, e il bue sarà lapidato.
33 "When a man uncovers or digs a cistern and does not cover it over again, should an ox or an ass fall into it,	33 Quando un uomo lascia una cisterna aperta oppure quando un uomo scava una cisterna e non la copre, se vi cade un bue o un asino,
34 the owner of the cistern must make good by restoring the value of the animal to its owner; the dead animal, however, he may keep.	34 il proprietario della cisterna deve dare l’indennizzo: verserà il denaro al padrone della bestia e l’animale morto gli apparterrà.
35 "When one man's ox hurts another's ox so badly that it dies, they shall sell the live ox and divide this money as well as the dead animal equally between them.	35 Quando il bue di un tale cozza contro il bue del suo prossimo e ne causa la morte, essi venderanno il bue vivo e se ne divideranno il prezzo; si divideranno anche la bestia morta.
36 But if it was known that the ox was previously in the habit of goring and its owner would not keep it in, he must make full restitution, an ox for an ox; but the dead animal he may keep. (v 37) "When a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters or sells it, he shall restore five oxen for the one ox, and four sheep for the one sheep.	36 Ma se è notorio che il bue era solito cozzare già prima e il suo padrone non lo ha custodito, egli dovrà dare come indennizzo bue per bue e la bestia morta gli apparterrà.
	37 Quando un uomo ruba un bue o un montone e poi lo sgozza o lo vende, darà come indennizzo cinque capi di grosso bestiame per il bue e quattro capi di bestiame minuto per il montone.
