1 It was reported to Holofernes, commander-in-chief of the Assyrian army, that the Israelites were ready for battle, and had blocked the mountain passes, fortified the summits of all the higher peaks, and placed roadblocks in the plains.	1 Essendo stato annunziato a Oloferne, capo dell'esercito degli Assiri, che i figli d'Israele si preparavano a resistere, e avevan chiusi i passi delle montagne,
2 In great anger he summoned all the rulers of the Moabites, the generals of the Ammonites, and all the satraps of the seacoast	2 montò su tutte le furie, e, infiammato di grande ira, chiamò i principi di Moab, e i capi d'Ammon,
3 and said to them: "Now tell me, you Canaanites, what sort of people is this that dwells in the mountains? Which cities do they inhabit? How large is their army? In what does their power and strength consist? Who has set himself up as their king and the leader of their army?	3 e disse loro: « Ditemi che popolo è questo che occupa le montagne, quali siano le loro città, e quante e di che importanza; qual sia la loro forza, il loro numero, e chi sia il capo del loro esercito,
4 Why have they refused to come out to meet me along with all the other inhabitants of the West?"	4 e come mai, fra tutti i popoli d'oriente, questi ci han disprezzato e non ci sono venuti incontro per accoglierci in pace? »
5 Then Achior, the leader of all the Ammonites said to him: "My lord, hear this account from your servant; I will tell you the truth about this people that lives near you (that inhabits this mountain region); no lie shall escape your servant's lips.	5 Allora Achior, capo di tutti i tigli d'Ammon, rispose e disse: « Se tu signor mio, ti degnerai di ascoltarmi, io in tua presenza dirò la verità riguardo a questo popolo che abita le montagne, e dalla mia bocca non uscirà una parola falsa.
6 "These people are descendants of the Chaldeans.	6 Questo popolo è della razza dei Caldei
7 They formerly dwelt in Mesopotamia, for they did not wish to follow the gods of their forefathers who were born in the land of the Chaldeans.	7 e da principio abitò nella Mesopotamia. Ma non volendo seguire gli dèi dei loro padri, che erano nella terra dei Caldei,
8 Since they abandoned the way of their ancestors, and acknowledged with divine worship the God of heaven, their forefathers expelled them from the presence of their gods. So they fled to Mesopotamia and dwelt there a long time.	8 ne abbandonarono le cerimonie che rendevan culto a molti dèi,
9 Their God bade them leave their abode and proceed to the land of Canaan. Here they settled, and grew very rich in gold, silver, and a great abundance of livestock.	9 e adorarono il solo Dio del cielo, il quale ordinò loro di partire di là e di andare a stare in Caran. Quando la farne oppresse tutta la regione, scesero in Egitto, ove, nello spazio di quattrocento anni si moltiplicarono in modo che il loro esercito non poteva più numerarsi .
10 Later, when famine had gripped the whole land of Canaan, they went down into Egypt. They stayed there as long as they found sustenance, and grew into such a great multitude that the number of their race could not be counted.	10 Or siccome il re d'Egitto li opprimeva, forzandoli a fabbricar le sue città con fango e mattoni, essi alzarono le grida al loro Signore, che percosse tutta la terra d'Egitto, con diverse piaghe.
11 The king of Egypt, however, rose up against them, shrewdly forced them to labor at brickmaking, oppressed and enslaved them.	11 Cessati i flagelli, gli Egiziani, che li avevano cacciati, vollero di nuovo richiamarli a servire.
12 But they cried to their God, and he struck the land of Egypt with plagues for which there was no remedy. When the Egyptians expelled them,	12 Ad essi che fuggivano il Dio del cielo aperse il mare in modo che da un lato all'altro le acque divennero solide come un muro, ed essi passarono a piede asciutto, camminando sul fondo del mare;
13 God dried up the Red Sea before them,	13 mentre, nello stesso luogo, l'innumerevole esercito degli Egiziani che l'inseguiva fu così coperto dalle acque da non rimanerne neppure uno per raccontare ai posteri l'accaduto,
14 and led them along the route to Sinai and Kadesh-barnea. First they drove out all the inhabitants of the desert;	14 usciti dal Mare Rosso, occuparono i deserti del monte Sinai, nei quali mai potè abitare l'uomo, nè riposare il figlio dell'uomo.
15 then they settled in the land of the Amorites, destroyed all the Heshbonites by main force, crossed the Jordan, and took possession of the whole mountain region.	15 Ma le fontane amare divennero dolci e potabili per essi che per quarantanni ebbero il vitto dal cielo.
16 They expelled the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Shechemites, and all the Gergesites; and they lived in these mountains a long time.	16 Dovunque entrarono, senz'arco, nè freccia, nè scudo, nè spada, il loro Dio combattè per essi e vinse;
17 "As long as the Israelites did not sin in the sight of their God, they prospered, for their God, who hates wickedness, was with them.	17 e nessuno potè insultare questo popolo, se non quando egli s'allontanò dal culto del Signore Dio suo.
18 But when they deviated from the way he prescribed for them, they were ground down steadily, more and more, by frequent wars, and finally taken as captives into foreign lands. The temple of their God was razed to the ground, and their cities were occupied by their enemies.	18 Però, tutte le volte che adorarono altro dio oltre il loro proprio, furono abbandonati al saccheggio, alla spada, all'ignominia;
19 But now that they have returned to their God, they have come back from the Dispersion wherein they were scattered, and have repossessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and have settled again in the mountain region which was unoccupied.	19 ma tutte le volte che si pentirono d'avere abbandonato il culto del loro Dio, il Dio del cielo diede loro la forza di resistere.
20 "So now, my lord and master, if these people are at fault, and are sinning against their God, and if we verify this offense of theirs, then we shall be able to go up and conquer them.	20 Giunsero a debellare i re Cananei, i Gebusei, i Ferezei, gli Etei, gli Evei, gli Amorrei, e tutti i potenti d'Esebon e presero possesso delle loro terre e delle loro città.
21 But if they are not a guilty nation, then your lordship should keep his distance; otherwise their Lord and God will shield them, and we shall become the laughing stock of the whole world."	21 Finchè non peccavano nel cospetto del loro Dio, andava loro bene, perchè il loro Dio odia l'iniquità.
22 Now when Achior had concluded his recommendation, all the people standing round about the tent murmured; and the officers of Holofernes and all the inhabitants of the seacoast and of Moab alike said he should be cut to pieces.	22 infatti nel passato, avendo abbandonata la via data loro a seguire da Dio, furono sterminati in battaglia da molti popoli e moltissimi di essi furono menati schiavi in terra straniera;
23 "We are not afraid of the Israelites," they said, "for they are a powerless people, incapable of a strong defense.	23 ma poco fa, essendo ritornati al Signore loro Dio, si sono riuniti dopo la dispersione, e sono saliti su tutte queste montagne, e posseggono di nuovo Gerusalemme dov'è il loro santuario.
24 Let us therefore attack them; your great army, Lord Holofernes, will swallow them up."	24 Or dunque, signor mio, procura di sapere se son rei di qualche iniquità dinanzi al loro Dio: allora assaliamoli, chè il loro Dio te li darà nelle mani, e saran soggiogati dal peso della tua forza;
	25 ma se questo popolo non ha offeso il suo Dio, non potremo resistergli, perchè il loro Dio li difenderà, e noi diventeremo lo scherno di tutta la terra ».
	26 Appena Achior ebbe finito di dire queste cose, tutti i grandi d'Oloferne, in preda alla collera, pensavano di ucciderlo, e dicevansi l'un l'altro:
	27 « Chi è costui, il quale osa dire che i figli d'Israele possono resistere al re Nabucodonosor e ai suoi eserciti, essi che sono uomini senz'armi, senza forza, senza perizia nell'arte della guerra?
	28 Or per far conoscere ad Achior quanto s'inganna, saliamo sulle montagne, e, fatti prigionieri i più forti dei loro, con essi passeremo a fìl di spada anche lui,
	29 affinchè ogni nazione sappia che Nabucodonosor è il dio della terra e non ve n'è altro fuori di lui ».
