1 It was reported to Holofernes, commander-in-chief of the Assyrian army, that the Israelites were ready for battle, and had blocked the mountain passes, fortified the summits of all the higher peaks, and placed roadblocks in the plains.	1 Intanto fu riferito a Oloferne, comandante in capo dell'esercito assiro, che gl'Israeliti si preparavano alla guerra e che avevano sbarrato i passi montani, fortificato tutte le sommità degli alti monti e posto barriere nelle pianure.
2 In great anger he summoned all the rulers of the Moabites, the generals of the Ammonites, and all the satraps of the seacoast	2 Allora, montato in gran furore, egli convocò tutti i capi di Moab, i generali di Ammon e tutti i satrapi del litorale,
3 and said to them: "Now tell me, you Canaanites, what sort of people is this that dwells in the mountains? Which cities do they inhabit? How large is their army? In what does their power and strength consist? Who has set himself up as their king and the leader of their army?	3 e disse loro: "Spiegatemi un po', o uomini di Canaan, chi è questo popolo che risiede nella regione montuosa? Quali sono le città che abita? Qual è l'importanza del suo esercito? Dove risiede la loro potenza e la loro forza? Chi si è messo alla loro testa come re e comanda il loro esercito?
4 Why have they refused to come out to meet me along with all the other inhabitants of the West?"	4 Perché, a differenza di tutti gli abitanti dell'Occidente, essi hanno rifiutato di venirmi incontro?".
5 Then Achior, the leader of all the Ammonites said to him: "My lord, hear this account from your servant; I will tell you the truth about this people that lives near you (that inhabits this mountain region); no lie shall escape your servant's lips.	5 Allora Achior, capo di tutti gli Ammoniti, gli rispose: "Ascolti, ti prego, il mio signore una parola dalla bocca del tuo servo; io ti riferirò la verità a proposito di questo popolo che abita questa regione montuosa, vicino al luogo dove risiedi; non uscirà menzogna dalla bocca del tuo servo.
6 "These people are descendants of the Chaldeans.	6 Questo popolo discende dai Caldei;
7 They formerly dwelt in Mesopotamia, for they did not wish to follow the gods of their forefathers who were born in the land of the Chaldeans.	7 dapprima andarono ad abitare nella Mesopotamia, perché non vollero seguire gli dèi dei loro padri che si trovavano nel paese dei Caldei.
8 Since they abandoned the way of their ancestors, and acknowledged with divine worship the God of heaven, their forefathers expelled them from the presence of their gods. So they fled to Mesopotamia and dwelt there a long time.	8 Abbandonata la religione dei loro padri, adorarono il Dio del cielo, il Dio che essi avevano riconosciuto. Cacciati dal cospetto dei loro dèi, essi si rifugiarono nella Mesopotamia, dove soggiornarono per lungo tempo.
9 Their God bade them leave their abode and proceed to the land of Canaan. Here they settled, and grew very rich in gold, silver, and a great abundance of livestock.	9 Ma il loro Dio comandò loro di uscire da quella dimora e di recarsi nel paese di Canaan. Qui si stabilirono e si arricchirono di oro, di argento e di moltissimo bestiame.
10 Later, when famine had gripped the whole land of Canaan, they went down into Egypt. They stayed there as long as they found sustenance, and grew into such a great multitude that the number of their race could not be counted.	10 Poi discesero in Egitto, perché la fame s'era estesa a tutto il paese di Canaan, e ivi dimorarono, finché ebbero di che nutrirsi. Là divennero pure una grande moltitudine e la loro stirpe era innumerevole.
11 The king of Egypt, however, rose up against them, shrewdly forced them to labor at brickmaking, oppressed and enslaved them.	11 Ma il re d'Egitto si levò contro di loro e li sfruttò, costringendoli a fabbricare mattoni. Li umiliarono e li resero schiavi.
12 But they cried to their God, and he struck the land of Egypt with plagues for which there was no remedy. When the Egyptians expelled them,	12 Essi gridarono al loro Dio, che percosse tutto il paese d'Egitto con piaghe alle quali non c'era rimedio; perciò gli Egiziani li cacciarono dal loro cospetto.
13 God dried up the Red Sea before them,	13 Davanti a loro Dio prosciugò il Mar Rosso
14 and led them along the route to Sinai and Kadesh-barnea. First they drove out all the inhabitants of the desert;	14 e li diresse per il cammino del Sinai e di Cadesbarne; poi, cacciati tutti gli abitanti del deserto,
15 then they settled in the land of the Amorites, destroyed all the Heshbonites by main force, crossed the Jordan, and took possession of the whole mountain region.	15 si stabilirono nel territorio degli Amorrei e con la loro potenza sterminarono tutti gli abitanti di Esebon; quindi passarono il Giordano e s'impossessarono di tutta la regione montuosa,
16 They expelled the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Shechemites, and all the Gergesites; and they lived in these mountains a long time.	16 scacciando davanti a loro il Cananeo, il Perizzita, il Gebuseo, il Sichemita e tutti i Gergesei, e abitarono ivi per molto tempo.
17 "As long as the Israelites did not sin in the sight of their God, they prospered, for their God, who hates wickedness, was with them.	17 Difatti, finché non peccarono contro il loro Dio, godettero prosperità, perché hanno con loro un Dio che odia l'iniquità.
18 But when they deviated from the way he prescribed for them, they were ground down steadily, more and more, by frequent wars, and finally taken as captives into foreign lands. The temple of their God was razed to the ground, and their cities were occupied by their enemies.	18 Invece quando si allontanarono dalla via che aveva loro assegnato, soffrirono tremende distruzioni nelle loro guerre, furono condotti prigionieri in terra straniera, il tempio del loro Dio fu raso al suolo e le loro città furono conquistate dagli avversari.
19 But now that they have returned to their God, they have come back from the Dispersion wherein they were scattered, and have repossessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and have settled again in the mountain region which was unoccupied.	19 Ma ora, essendosi convertiti al loro Dio, hanno fatto ritorno dai luoghi dov'erano stati dispersi, hanno rioccupato Gerusalemme dove si trova il loro santuario e si sono ristabiliti nella regione montuosa, che era deserta.
20 "So now, my lord and master, if these people are at fault, and are sinning against their God, and if we verify this offense of theirs, then we shall be able to go up and conquer them.	20 Ed ora, sovrano signore, se in questo popolo ci fosse qualche colpa per aver essi peccato contro il loro Dio, accertiamoci se c'è tra loro questo scandalo, e poi avanziamo e attacchiamoli;
21 But if they are not a guilty nation, then your lordship should keep his distance; otherwise their Lord and God will shield them, and we shall become the laughing stock of the whole world."	21 ma se tra la loro gente non c'è nessuna trasgressione, il mio signore passi oltre, affinché non avvenga che il loro Signore e il loro Dio si faccia scudo sopra di loro e noi diventiamo oggetto di scherno al cospetto di tutta la terra".
22 Now when Achior had concluded his recommendation, all the people standing round about the tent murmured; and the officers of Holofernes and all the inhabitants of the seacoast and of Moab alike said he should be cut to pieces.	22 Quando Achior finì di dire queste parole, tutta la gente che circondava la tenda e stava dintorno si mise a mormorare e gli ufficiali di Oloferne e tutti gli abitanti del litorale e di Moab proponevano di farlo a pezzi.
23 "We are not afraid of the Israelites," they said, "for they are a powerless people, incapable of a strong defense.	23 "Non dobbiamo aver paura degl'Israeliti; è un popolo, infatti, che non possiede né esercito né forza per un valido schieramento.
24 Let us therefore attack them; your great army, Lord Holofernes, will swallow them up."	24 Perciò avanziamo ed essi saranno un facile boccone per tutto il tuo esercito, o sovrano Oloferne".
