1 It was reported to Holofernes, commander-in-chief of the Assyrian army, that the Israelites were ready for battle, and had blocked the mountain passes, fortified the summits of all the higher peaks, and placed roadblocks in the plains.	1 Se dio aviso a Holofernes, jefe supremo del ejército asirio, de que los israelitas se habían preparado para la guerra, que habían cerrado los pasos de las montañas, fortificado todas las alturas de los montes elevados y puesto obstáculos en las llanuras.
2 In great anger he summoned all the rulers of the Moabites, the generals of the Ammonites, and all the satraps of the seacoast	2 Esto le irritó sobremanera, y mandó llamar a todos los jefes de Moab, a los generales de Ammón y a todos los sátrapas del litoral,
3 and said to them: "Now tell me, you Canaanites, what sort of people is this that dwells in the mountains? Which cities do they inhabit? How large is their army? In what does their power and strength consist? Who has set himself up as their king and the leader of their army?	3 les dijo: «Hijos de Canaán, hacedme saber quién es este pueblo establecido en la montaña, qué ciudades habita, cuál es la importancia de su ejército y en qué estriba su poder y su fuerza, qué rey está a su frente y manda a sus soldados,
4 Why have they refused to come out to meet me along with all the other inhabitants of the West?"	4 y por qué, a diferencia de todos los demás pueblos de occidente, han desdeñado salir a recibirme».
5 Then Achior, the leader of all the Ammonites said to him: "My lord, hear this account from your servant; I will tell you the truth about this people that lives near you (that inhabits this mountain region); no lie shall escape your servant's lips.	5 Entonces Ajior, general de todos los ammonitas, le dijo: «Escuche mi señor las palabras de la boca de tu siervo y te diré la verdad sobre este pueblo que habita esta montaña junto a la que te encuentras. No saldrá mentira de la boca de tu siervo.
6 "These people are descendants of the Chaldeans.	6 Este pueblo desciende de los caldeos.
7 They formerly dwelt in Mesopotamia, for they did not wish to follow the gods of their forefathers who were born in the land of the Chaldeans.	7 Al principio se fueron a residir a Mesopotamia, porque no quisieron seguir a los dioses de sus padres, que vivían en Caldea.
8 Since they abandoned the way of their ancestors, and acknowledged with divine worship the God of heaven, their forefathers expelled them from the presence of their gods. So they fled to Mesopotamia and dwelt there a long time.	8 Se apartaron del camino de sus padres y adoraron al Dios del Cielo, al Dios que habían reconocido. Por eso les arrojaron de la presencia de sus dioses y ellos se refugiaron en Mesopotamia, donde residieron por mucho tiempo.
9 Their God bade them leave their abode and proceed to the land of Canaan. Here they settled, and grew very rich in gold, silver, and a great abundance of livestock.	9 Su Dios les ordenó salir de su casa y marchar a la tierra de Canaán; se establecieron en ella y fueron colmados de oro, de plata y de gran cantidad de ganado.
10 Later, when famine had gripped the whole land of Canaan, they went down into Egypt. They stayed there as long as they found sustenance, and grew into such a great multitude that the number of their race could not be counted.	10 Bajaron después a Egipto, porque el hambre se extendió sobre la superficie de la tierra de Canaán, y permanecieron allí mientras tuvieron alimentos. Allí se hicieron muy numerosos, de modo que no se podía contar a los de su raza.
11 The king of Egypt, however, rose up against them, shrewdly forced them to labor at brickmaking, oppressed and enslaved them.	11 Pero el rey de Egipto se alzó contra ellos y los engañó con el trabajo de los ladrillos, los humilló y los redujo a esclavitud.
12 But they cried to their God, and he struck the land of Egypt with plagues for which there was no remedy. When the Egyptians expelled them,	12 Clamaron a su Dios, que castigó la tierra de Egipto con plagas incurables. Los egipcios, entonces, los arrojaron lejos de sí.
13 God dried up the Red Sea before them,	13 Dios secó a su paso el mar Rojo,
14 and led them along the route to Sinai and Kadesh-barnea. First they drove out all the inhabitants of the desert;	14 y los condujo por el camino del Sinaí y Cadés Barnea. Arrojaron a todos los moradores del desierto,
15 then they settled in the land of the Amorites, destroyed all the Heshbonites by main force, crossed the Jordan, and took possession of the whole mountain region.	15 se establecieron en el país de los amorreos y aniquilaron por la fuerza a todos los jesbonitas. Pasaron el Jordán y se apoderaron de toda la montaña,
16 They expelled the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Shechemites, and all the Gergesites; and they lived in these mountains a long time.	16 expulsaron ante ellos al cananeo, al perizita, al jebuseo, a los siquemitas y a todos los guirgasitas, y habitaron allí por mucho tiempo.
17 "As long as the Israelites did not sin in the sight of their God, they prospered, for their God, who hates wickedness, was with them.	17 Mientras no pecaron contra su Dios vivieron en prosperidad, porque está en medio de ellos un Dios que odia la iniquidad.
18 But when they deviated from the way he prescribed for them, they were ground down steadily, more and more, by frequent wars, and finally taken as captives into foreign lands. The temple of their God was razed to the ground, and their cities were occupied by their enemies.	18 Pero cuando se apartaron del camino que les había impuesto, fueron duramente aniquilados por múltiples guerras, y deportados a tierra extraña; el Templo de su Dios fue arrasado y sus ciudades cayeron en poder de sus adversarios.
19 But now that they have returned to their God, they have come back from the Dispersion wherein they were scattered, and have repossessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and have settled again in the mountain region which was unoccupied.	19 Pero ahora, habiéndose convertido a su Dios, han vuelto de los diversos lugares en que habían sido dispersados, han tomado posesión de Jerusalén, donde se encuentra su santuario, y se han estabecido en la montaña que había quedado desierta.
20 "So now, my lord and master, if these people are at fault, and are sinning against their God, and if we verify this offense of theirs, then we shall be able to go up and conquer them.	20 Así pues, dueño y señor, si hay algún extravío en este pueblo, si han pecado contra su Dios, y vemos que hay en ellos alguna causa de ruina, subamos y ataquémoslos.
21 But if they are not a guilty nation, then your lordship should keep his distance; otherwise their Lord and God will shield them, and we shall become the laughing stock of the whole world."	21 Pero si no hay iniquidad en esa gente, que mi señor se detenga, no sea que su Dios y Señor les proteja con su escudo y nos hagamos nosotros la irrisión de toda la tierra».
22 Now when Achior had concluded his recommendation, all the people standing round about the tent murmured; and the officers of Holofernes and all the inhabitants of the seacoast and of Moab alike said he should be cut to pieces.	22 En acabando de decir Ajior todas estas palabras, se alzó un murmullo entre toda la gente que estaba en torno de la tienda, y los magnates de Holofernes y los habitantes de la costa y de Moab hablaron de despedazarle.
23 "We are not afraid of the Israelites," they said, "for they are a powerless people, incapable of a strong defense.	23 «¡No tememos a los israelitas! No son gente que tenga fuerza ni vigor para un encuentro violento.
24 Let us therefore attack them; your great army, Lord Holofernes, will swallow them up."	24 ¡Subamos y serán un bocado para todo tu ejército, señor, Holofernes!»
