1 It was reported to Holofernes, commander-in-chief of the Assyrian army, that the Israelites were ready for battle, and had blocked the mountain passes, fortified the summits of all the higher peaks, and placed roadblocks in the plains.	1 - Fu dunque narrato ad Oloferne capo dell'esercito assiro, come i figli d'Israele si fossero preparati alla resistenza, ed avessero sbarrato i passi dei monti.
2 In great anger he summoned all the rulers of the Moabites, the generals of the Ammonites, and all the satraps of the seacoast	2 Allora, entrato in gran furore ed in ira grandissima, chiamò tutt'i principi de' Moabiti ed i capi degli Ammoniti,
3 and said to them: "Now tell me, you Canaanites, what sort of people is this that dwells in the mountains? Which cities do they inhabit? How large is their army? In what does their power and strength consist? Who has set himself up as their king and the leader of their army?	3 e disse loro: « Ditemi che popolo è questo che ha occupato i passi montani; quali e quante sono le loro città; quale è il loro valore, quale il loro numero, e chi è il capo delle loro milizie;
4 Why have they refused to come out to meet me along with all the other inhabitants of the West?"	4 e perchè, a differenza di tutti quelli che abitano ad oriente, questi ci hanno disprezzato, e non son venuti incontro a noi per riceverci pacificamente ».
5 Then Achior, the leader of all the Ammonites said to him: "My lord, hear this account from your servant; I will tell you the truth about this people that lives near you (that inhabits this mountain region); no lie shall escape your servant's lips.	5 Allora Achior, capo di tutti gli Ammoniti, rispose, e disse: « Se ti degnerai d'ascoltarmi, signor mio, io dirò innanzi a te la verità a riguardo di questo popolo che abita sui monti, e non uscirà parola falsa dalla mia bocca.
6 "These people are descendants of the Chaldeans.	6 Questo popolo è della razza de' Caldei.
7 They formerly dwelt in Mesopotamia, for they did not wish to follow the gods of their forefathers who were born in the land of the Chaldeans.	7 Esso abitò prima nella Mesopotamia, perchè non volcvnn seguire gli dèi de' padri loro, della terra de' Caldei.
8 Since they abandoned the way of their ancestors, and acknowledged with divine worship the God of heaven, their forefathers expelled them from the presence of their gods. So they fled to Mesopotamia and dwelt there a long time.	8 Abbandonando dunque il culto de' loro padri che adoravano una moltitudine di dèi,
9 Their God bade them leave their abode and proceed to the land of Canaan. Here they settled, and grew very rich in gold, silver, and a great abundance of livestock.	9 servirono al solo Dio del cielo. Questi comandò loro d'uscire di li, e d'abitare in Caran. Avendo poi la fame Invasa tutta la terra, vennero in Egitto, ed ivi in capo a quattrocent'anni si moltiplicaron talmente da formare un esercito innumerevole.
10 Later, when famine had gripped the whole land of Canaan, they went down into Egypt. They stayed there as long as they found sustenance, and grew into such a great multitude that the number of their race could not be counted.	10 Ma avendoli il re d'Egitto angariati, e costretti a fabbricare con terra e mattoni le sue città, levaron le grida al Signore, il quale con più e diverse piaghe percosse tutto l'Egitto,
11 The king of Egypt, however, rose up against them, shrewdly forced them to labor at brickmaking, oppressed and enslaved them.	11 Allora gli Egiziani li fecero andar via. Ma cessati i loro flagelli, volendo essi riprenderli, e riassoggettarli alla loro schiavitù,
12 But they cried to their God, and he struck the land of Egypt with plagues for which there was no remedy. When the Egyptians expelled them,	12 fuggendo quelli, il Dio del cielo aprì il mare in modo che di qua e dì là le acque si fermarono come un muro, e quelli a piede asciutto camminando sul fondo del mare l'attraversarono.
13 God dried up the Red Sea before them,	13 Nello stesso luogo, un esercito innumerevole d'egiziani che li inseguiva, fu travolto dalle acque in guisa che non ne scampò neppure uno per raccontare a' posteri il fatto.
14 and led them along the route to Sinai and Kadesh-barnea. First they drove out all the inhabitants of the desert;	14 Usciti poi dal Mar Rosso, occuparono i deserti del monte Sinai, dove mai potè abitare un uomo, nè un flgliuol d'uomo fermarsi.
15 then they settled in the land of the Amorites, destroyed all the Heshbonites by main force, crossed the Jordan, and took possession of the whole mountain region.	15 Ivi, delle fonti amare furon rese dolci a beversl, e per quarant' anni quelli riceverono l'alimento dal cielo.
16 They expelled the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Shechemites, and all the Gergesites; and they lived in these mountains a long time.	16 Dovunque si avanzavano, senz'archi e saette, senza scudi e spade, il Dio loro combattè per loro, e vinse.
17 "As long as the Israelites did not sin in the sight of their God, they prospered, for their God, who hates wickedness, was with them.	17 Nè vi fu chi potesse far male a quel popolo, altro che quando si sviava dal culto del Signore Dio suo.
18 But when they deviated from the way he prescribed for them, they were ground down steadily, more and more, by frequent wars, and finally taken as captives into foreign lands. The temple of their God was razed to the ground, and their cities were occupied by their enemies.	18 Giacché, ogni qual volta invece del loro Dio ne adorarono un altro furon lasciati alla preda, alla spada, all'obbrobrio.
19 But now that they have returned to their God, they have come back from the Dispersion wherein they were scattered, and have repossessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and have settled again in the mountain region which was unoccupied.	19 Ed ogni qual volta si pentirono d'aver abbandonato il culto del loro Dio, il Dio del cielo dette loro la forza di resistere.
20 "So now, my lord and master, if these people are at fault, and are sinning against their God, and if we verify this offense of theirs, then we shall be able to go up and conquer them.	20 Infine abbatterono il re Cananeo, il Jebuseo, il Ferezeo, l'Eteo, l'Amorreo, e tutti 1 re potenti di Esebon, e ne conquistarono 1 territori e le città.
21 But if they are not a guilty nation, then your lordship should keep his distance; otherwise their Lord and God will shield them, and we shall become the laughing stock of the whole world."	21 E fintanto che non peccavano al cospetto del loro Dio, avevano ogni bene; perchè il loro Dio odia l'iniquità.
22 Now when Achior had concluded his recommendation, all the people standing round about the tent murmured; and the officers of Holofernes and all the inhabitants of the seacoast and of Moab alike said he should be cut to pieces.	22 Anche in questi ultimi anni, essendosi allontanati dalla via che Dio aveva segnato loro per camminarvi, furon sconfitti in guerra da molte nazioni, e molti di loro furon condotti prigionieri in terra straniera.
23 "We are not afraid of the Israelites," they said, "for they are a powerless people, incapable of a strong defense.	23 Ultimamente poi, ritornati al Signore Dio loro dall'esilio nel quale erano stati dispersi, si sono riuniti, sono saliti su tutte queste montagne, e di nuovo posseggono Gerusalemme, ove sono i loro santuarii.
24 Let us therefore attack them; your great army, Lord Holofernes, will swallow them up."	24 Ora dunque, signor mio, informati. Se si trovano avere al cospetto del loro Dio qualche colpa, attacchiamoli pure; perchè il loro Dio te li darà in mano, e resteranno abbattuti sotto il giogo della tua potenza.
	25 Ma se questo popolo non è reo dinanzi al suo Dio, non potremo resistere contro di loro; perchè il loro Dio li difenderà, e noi diventeremo il ludibrio di tutta la terra ».
	26 Or dunque, cessato che ebbe Achlor di parlare così, tutt' i capi dell'esercito d'Oloferne si sdegnarono, e pensavano d'ucciderlo, dicendosi uno all'altro:
	27 « Chi è costui il quale osa dire che i figli d'Israele, gente senz'armi, senza valore e senza perizia nell'arte della guerra, possan resistere al re Nabucodonosor ed a' suoi eserciti?
	28 Acciò dunque Achior conosca a prova d'averci ingannati, diamo l'assalto a que' monti; quando avrem fatti prigionieri i più forti di loro, egli insieme con essi sarà trafitto di spada,
	29 affinchè tutti i popoli sappiano che Nabucodonosor è il dio della terra, e non ve n' è altri fuori di lui ».
