Nehemiah 13

1 At that time, when there was reading from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people, it was found written there that "no Ammonite or Moabite may ever be admitted into the assembly of God;	1 Naquele tempo, por ocasião de uma leitura pública do livro deMoisés, descobriu-se um texto no qual se dizia que o amonita e o moabita jamais deviam ingressar na assembléia de Deus,
2 for they would not succor the Israelites with food and water, but they hired Balaam to curse them, though our God turned the curse into a blessing."	2 porque não tinham vindo ao encontro dos filhos de Israel com pão e água, e haviam contratado Balaão para amaldiçoá-los - maldição que nosso Deus mudara em bênção.
3 When they had heard the law, they separated from Israel every foreign element.	3 Logo que se ouviu a leitura dessa lei, excluíram de Israel todos os elementos estrangeiros.
4 Before this, the priest Eliashib, who had been placed in charge of the chambers of the house of our God and who was an associate of Tobiah,	4 Antes disso, o sacerdote Eliasib, intendente dos depósitos da casa de nosso Deus, e parente de Tobias,
5 had set aside for the latter's use a large chamber in which had previously been stored the cereal offerings, incense and utensils, the tithes in grain, wine, and oil allotted to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the offerings due the priests.	5 colocara à disposição deste último uma grande sala, onde se depositavam até então as oferendas, o incenso, os utensílios, o dízimo do trigo, do vinho e do azeite, a taxa dos levitas, dos cantores e porteiros e as ofertas devidas aos sacerdotes.
6 During all this time I had not been in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes, king of Babylon, I had gone back to the king. After due time, however, I asked leave of the king	6 Quando fazia tudo isso, eu não estava mais em Jerusalém; porque no trigésimo segundo ano do reinado de Artaxerxes, rei de Babilônia, fui ter com o rei.
7 and returned to Jerusalem, where I discovered the evil thing that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in setting aside for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.	7 Decorrido algum tempo, voltei a Jerusalém com a aquiescência do rei, e tive conhecimento do mal que havia cometido Eliasib em favor de Tobias, colocando-lhe à disposição uma sala nos átrios da casa de Deus.
8 This displeased me very much, and I had all of Tobiah's household goods thrown outside the chamber.	8 Fiquei grandemente indignado. Mandei tirar para fora do quarto todo o mobiliário de Tobias,
9 Then I gave orders to purify the chambers, and I had them replace there the utensils of the house of God, the cereal offerings, and the incense.	9 ordenei que purificassem a sala, e fiz recolocar os utensílios da casa de Deus, as oferendas e o incenso.
10 I learned, too, that the portions due the Levites were no longer being given, so that the Levites and the singers who should have been carrying out the services had deserted, each man to his own field.	10 Soube também que as dádivas devidas aos levitas não lhes tinham sido entregues, e que os levitas e os cantores encarregados do serviço tinham se retirado cada um para as suas terras.
11 I took the magistrates to task, demanding, "Why is the house of God abandoned?" Then I brought the Levites together and had them resume their stations.	11 Censurei os magistrados e disse-lhes: Por que foi abandonada a casa de Deus? Depois reuni os levitas e cantores, e os recoloquei em seus postos.
12 All Judah once more brought in the tithes of grain, wine, and oil to the storerooms;	12 Então todo o Judá trouxe para os armazéns o dízimo do trigo, do vinho e do óleo.
13 and in charge of the storerooms I appointed the priest Shelemiah, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah, one of the Levites, together with Hanan, son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, as their assistant; for these men were held to be trustworthy. It was their duty to make the distribution to their brethren.	13 Confiei a intendência dos armazéns ao sacerdote Selemias, ao escriba Sadoc, e a Fadaías, um dos levitas, com o seu auxiliar Hanã, filho de Zacur, filho de Matanias, porque tinham reputação de integridade. 14 Remember this to my credit, O my God! Let not the devotion which I showed for the house of my God and its services be forgotten!	14 Recordai-vos de mim, ó meu Deus, que fiz tudo isso, e não apagueis de vossa memória os atos de piedade que fiz pela casa de meu Deus e por seu culto.
15 In those days I perceived that men in Judah were treading the winepresses on the sabbath; that they were bringing in sheaves of grain, loading them on their asses, together with wine, grapes, figs, and every other kind of burden, and bringing them to Jerusalem on the sabbath day. I warned them to sell none of these victuals.	15 Na mesma época, encontrei em Judá homens que pisavam uvas durante o sábado, carregavam molhos, e transportavam em jumentos vinho, uva, figos, e toda a espécie de fardos, levando-os para Jerusalém em dia de sábado. Admoestei-os então a respeito do dia em que vendiam os seus produtos.
16 In Jerusalem itself the Tyrians who were resident there were importing fish and every other kind of merchandise and selling it to the Judahites on the sabbath.	16 Havia também alguns de Tiro, estabelecidos na cidade, que traziam peixes e toda espécie de mercadorias, que vendiam em dia de sábado aos judeus, em Jerusalém.
17 I took the nobles of Judah to task, demanding of them: "What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the sabbath day?	17 Dirigi-me aos importantes de Judá: Procedeis muito mal, profanando o dia do sábado.
18 Did not your fathers act in this same way, with the result that our God has brought all this evil upon us and upon this city? Would you add to the wrath against Israel by once more profaning the sabbath?"	18 Vossos pais faziam o mesmo; e foi por isso que Deus fez cair todas essas desgraças sobre vós e sobre esta cidade. E vós ireis acender sua cólera contra Israel, profanando o sábado?
19 When the shadows were falling on the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I ordered the doors to be closed and forbade them to be reopened till after the sabbath. I posted some of my own men at the gates so that no burden might enter on the sabbath day.	19 Em conseqüência, logo que as portas de Jerusalém foram cobertas pela sombra, antes do sábado, mandei que se fechassem as portas e só as abrissem depois do sábado. Ademais, coloquei nas portas alguns dos meus homens, a fim de impedir que qualquer mercadoria entrasse no dia do sábado.
20 The merchants and sellers of various kinds of merchandise spent the night once or twice outside Jerusalem,	20 Então os negociantes e vendedores de toda espécie de produtos passaram uma ou duas vezes a noite fora de Jerusalém.
21 but then I warned them, saying to them: "Why do you spend the night alongside the wall? If you keep this up, I will lay hands on you!" From that time on, they did not return on the sabbath.	21 Interroguei-os: Por que passais a noite diante das muralhas? Se recomeçardes, mandar-vos-ei castigar. Cessaram então de vir durante o sábado.
22 Then I ordered the Levites to purify themselves and to go and watch the gates, so that the sabbath day might be kept holy. This, too, remember in my favor, O my God, and have mercy on me in accordance with your great mercy!	22 E ordenei aos levitas que se purificassem e viessem guardar as portas para santificar o dia do sábado. Recordai-vos de mim, ó meu Deus, por causa disso, e tende piedade de mim segundo a vossa grande misericórdia.
23 Also in those days I saw Jews who had married Ashdodite, Ammonite, or Moabite wives.	23 Naqueles dias, encontrei judeus que haviam desposado mulheres de Azot, de Amon e de Moab.
24 Of their children, half spoke Ashdodite, and none of them knew how to speak Jewish; and so it was in regard to the languages of the various other peoples.	24 A metade de seus filhos falava a língua de Azot e não sabia mais o hebraico; o mesmo sucedia com a língua dos outros povos.
25 I took them to task and cursed them; I had some of them beaten and their hair pulled out; and I adjured them by God: "You shall not marry your daughters to their sons nor take any of their daughters for your sons or for yourselves!	25 Admoestei-os e os amaldiçoei; bati em muitos, arranquei os cabelos de alguns, e ordenei-lhes, em nome de Deus, que não mais dessem suas filhas aos filhos de estrangeiros e não tomassem filhas estrangeiras para os seus filhos nem para si mesmos.
26 Did not Solomon, the king of Israel, sin because of them? Though among the many nations there was no king like him, and though he was beloved of his God and God had made him king over all Israel, yet even he was made to sin by foreign women.	26 Não foi esse, disse eu, o pecado de Salomão, rei de Israel? Não existia rei algum como ele entre a multidão das nações; era amado de seu Deus, e Deus o havia tornado rei de todo o Israel; entretanto, foram as mulheres estrangeiras que induziram tal homem a pecar.
27 Must it also be heard of you that you have done this same very great evil, betraying our God by marrying foreign women?"	27 E haveremos de ouvir que estais cometendo esse grande crime, e que sois assim infiéis ao nosso Deus, desposando mulheres estrangeiras?
28 One of the sons of Joiada, son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite! I drove him from my presence.	28 Ora, um dos filhos de Jojada, filho do sumo sacerdote Eliasib, tornara-se genro de Sanabalat, o horonita; expulsei-o para longe de mim.
29 Remember against them, O my God, how they defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites!	29 Recordai-vos, ó meu Deus, daqueles que profanaram assim o sacerdócio e os deveres sagrados dos sacerdotes e dos levitas!
30 Thus I cleansed them of all foreign contamination. I established the various functions for the priests and Levites, so that each had his appointed task.	30 Foi assim que purifiquei o povo de todo o elemento estrangeiro. Coloquei em vigor os regulamentos que sacerdotes e levitas deviam observar em seus respectivos mesteres,
31 I also provided for the procurement of wood at stated times and for the first fruits. Remember this in my favor, O my God!	31 e restabeleci a oferenda da madeira nas épocas determinadas, bem como as primícias. Levai-o em conta, ó meu Deus, para o meu bem!
