Nehemiah 13

1 At that time, when there was reading from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people, it was found written there that "no Ammonite or Moabite may ever be admitted into the assembly of God;	1 En aquel tiempo se leyó a oídos del pueblo en el libro de Moisés, y se encontró escrito en él: «El ammonita y el moabita no entrarán jamás en la asamblea de Dios,
2 for they would not succor the Israelites with food and water, but they hired Balaam to curse them, though our God turned the curse into a blessing."	2 porque no recibieron a los israelitas con pan y agua. Tomaron a sueldo contra ellos a Balaam, para maldecirles, pero nuestro Dios cambió la maldición en bendición».
3 When they had heard the law, they separated from Israel every foreign element.	3 Así que, en oyendo la Ley, se excluyó de Israel a todo extranjero.
4 Before this, the priest Eliashib, who had been placed in charge of the chambers of the house of our God and who was an associate of Tobiah,	4 Antes de esto, el sacerdote Elyasib había sido encargado de los aposentos de la Casa de nuestro Dios. Como era pariente de Tobías,
5 had set aside for the latter's use a large chamber in which had previously been stored the cereal offerings, incense and utensils, the tithes in grain, wine, and oil allotted to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the offerings due the priests.	5 le había proporcionado un aposento espacioso, donde anteriormente se depositaban las oblaciones, el incienso, los utensilios, el diezmo del trigo, del vino y del aceite, es decir, las porciones de los levitas, los cantores y los porteros, y lo reservado a los sacerdotes.
6 During all this time I had not been in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes, king of Babylon, I had gone back to the king. After due time, however, I asked leave of the king	6 Cuando sucedía esto, yo no estaba en Jerusalén, porque el año 32 de Artajerjes, rey de Babilonia, había ido donde el rey; pero al cabo de algún tiempo el rey me permitió volver;
7 and returned to Jerusalem, where I discovered the evil thing that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in setting aside for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.	7 volví a Jerusalén, y me enteré de la mala acción que había hecho Elyasib en favor de Tobías, preparándole un aposento en el atrio de la Casa de Dios.
8 This displeased me very much, and I had all of Tobiah's household goods thrown outside the chamber.	8 Esto me desagradó mucho; eché fuera del aposento todos los muebles de la casa de Tobías,
9 Then I gave orders to purify the chambers, and I had them replace there the utensils of the house of God, the cereal offerings, and the incense.	9 y mandé purificar los aposentos y volver a poner en ellos los utensilios de la Casa de Dios, las oblaciones y el incienso.
10 I learned, too, that the portions due the Levites were no longer being given, so that the Levites and the singers who should have been carrying out the services had deserted, each man to his own field.	10 Me enteré también de que ya no se entregaban las raciones de los levitas, por lo que ellos se habían marchado cada uno a su campo - los levitas y los cantores encargados del servicio -.
11 I took the magistrates to task, demanding, "Why is the house of God abandoned?" Then I brought the Levites together and had them resume their stations.	11 Reprendí por ello a los consejeros diciéndoles: «¿Por qué ha sido abandonada la Casa de Dios?» Luego los reuní de nuevo y los restablecí en sus puestos.
12 All Judah once more brought in the tithes of grain, wine, and oil to the storerooms;	12 Y todo Judá trajo a los almacenes el diezmo del trigo, del vino y del aceite.
13 and in charge of the storerooms I appointed the priest Shelemiah, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah, one of the Levites, together with Hanan, son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, as their assistant; for these men were held to be trustworthy. It was their duty to make the distribution to their brethren.	13 Puse al frente de los almacenes al sacerdote Selemías, al escriba Sadoq y Pedaías, uno de los levitas, y como ayundante, a Janán, hijo de Zakkur, hijo de Mattanías, porque eran considerados como personas fieles; les imcumbía distribuir las porciones a sus hermanos.
14 Remember this to my credit, O my God! Let not the devotion which I showed for the house of my God and its services be forgotten!	14 ¡Acuérdate de mí por esto, Dios mío; no borres las obras de piedad que yo hice por la Casa de mi Dios y por sus servicios!
15 In those days I perceived that men in Judah were treading the winepresses on the sabbath; that they were bringing in sheaves of grain, loading them on their asses, together with wine, grapes, figs, and every other kind of burden, and bringing them to Jerusalem on the sabbath day. I warned them to sell none of these victuals.	15 Por aquellos días, vi que había en Judá quienes pisaban los lagares en día de sábado; otros acarreaban los haces de trigo y los cargaban sobre los asnos, y también vino, uva, higos y toda clase de cargas, para traerlo a Jerusalén en día de sábado: les advertí que no vendiesen sus mercancías.
16 In Jerusalem itself the Tyrians who were resident there were importing fish and every other kind of merchandise and selling it to the Judahites on the sabbath.	16 En Jerusalén, algunos tirios que habitan en ella traían pescado y toda clase de mercancías para verdérselas a los judíos en día de sábado,
17 I took the nobles of Judah to task, demanding of them: "What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the sabbath day?	17 Reprendí a los notables de Judá diciendo: «¡Qué mala acción cometéis profanando el día del sábado!
18 Did not your fathers act in this same way, with the result that our God has brought all this evil upon us and upon this city? Would you add to the wrath against Israel by once more profaning the sabbath?"	18 ¿No fue así como obraron vuestros padres y por lo que nuestro Dios hizo caer toda esta desgracia sobre nosotros y sobre esta ciudad? ¡Y vosotros aumentáis así la Cólera contra Israel profanando el sábado!»
19 When the shadows were falling on the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I ordered the doors to be closed and forbade them to be reopened till after the sabbath. I posted some of my own men at the gates so that no burden might enter on the sabbath day.	19 Así que ordené que cuando la sombra cubriese las puertas de Jerusalén, la víspera del sábado se cerrasen las puertas, y que no se abriesen hasta después del sábado. Y puse junto a las puertas a algunos de mis hombres para que no entrase carga alguna en día de sábado.
20 The merchants and sellers of various kinds of merchandise spent the night once or twice outside Jerusalem,	20 Una o dos veces, algunos mercaderes que vendían toda clase de mercancías pasaron la noche fuera de Jerusalén,
21 but then I warned them, saying to them: "Why do you spend the night alongside the wall? If you keep this up, I will lay hands on you!" From that time on, they did not return on the sabbath.	21 pero yo les avisé diciéndoles: «¿Por qué pasáis la noche junto a la muralla? ¡Si volvéis a hacerlo, os meteré mano!» Desde entonces no volvían más en sábado.
22 Then I ordered the Levites to purify themselves and to go and watch the gates, so that the sabbath day might be kept holy. This, too, remember in my favor, O my God, and have mercy on me in accordance with your great mercy!	22 Ordené también a los levitas purificarse y venir a guardar las puertas, para santificar el sábado. ¡También por esto acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, y ten piedad de mí según tu gran misericordia!
23 Also in those days I saw Jews who had married Ashdodite, Ammonite, or Moabite wives.	23 Vi también en aquellos días que algunos judíos se habían casado con mujeres asdoditas, ammonitas o moabitas.
24 Of their children, half spoke Ashdodite, and none of them knew how to speak Jewish; and so it was in regard to the languages of the various other peoples.	24 De sus hijos, la mitad hablaban asdodeo o la lengua de uno u otro pueblo, pero no sabían ya hablar judío.
25 I took them to task and cursed them; I had some of them beaten and their hair pulled out; and I adjured them by God: "You shall not marry your daughters to their sons nor take any of their daughters for your sons or for yourselves!	25 Yo les reprendí y les maldije, hice azotar a algunos de ellos y arrancarles los cabellos, y los conjuré en nombre de Dios: «¡No debéis dar vuestras hijas a sus hijos ni tomar ninguna de sus hijas por mujeres ni para vuestros hijos ni para vosotros mismos!
26 Did not Solomon, the king of Israel, sin because of them? Though among the many nations there was no king like him, and though he was beloved of his God and God had made him king over all Israel, yet even he was made to sin by foreign women.	26 ¿No pecó en esto Salomón, rey de Israel? Entre tantas naciones no había un rey semejante a él; era amado de su Dios; Dios le había hecho rey de todo Israel. Y también a él le hicieron pecar las mujeres extranjeras.
27 Must it also be heard of you that you have done this same very great evil, betraying our God by marrying foreign women?"	27 ¿Se tendrá que oír de vosotros que cometéis el mismo gran crimen de rebelaros contra nuestro Dios casándoos con mujeres extranjeras?»
28 One of the sons of Joiada, son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite! I drove him from my presence.	28 Uno de los hijos de Yoyadá, hijo del sumo sacerdote Elyasib, era yerno de Samballat el joronita. Yo le eché de mi lado.
29 Remember against them, O my God, how they defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites!	29 ¡Acuérdate de estas gentes, Dios mío, por haber mancillado el sacerdocio y la alianza de los sacerdotes y levitas!
30 Thus I cleansed them of all foreign contamination. I established the various functions for the priests and Levites, so that each had his appointed task.	30 Los purifiqué, pues, de todo lo extranjero. Y establecí, para los sacerdotes y levitas, reglamentos que determinaran la tarea de cada uno,
31 I also provided for the procurement of wood at stated times and for the first fruits. Remember this in my favor, O my God!	31 y lo mismo para las ofrendas de leña a plazos fijos y para las primicias. ¡Acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, para mi bien!
