Nehemiah 13

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 At that time, when there was reading from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people, it was found written there that "no Ammonite or Moabite may ever be admitted into the assembly of God;	1 Aquel día, se leyó el libro de Moisés en presencia del pueblo, y en él se encontró escrito: «El amonita y el moabita no entrarán jamás en la asamblea de Dios,
2 for they would not succor the Israelites with food and water, but they hired Balaam to curse them, though our God turned the curse into a blessing."	2 porque no acogieron a los israelitas con pan y agua, sino que contrataron contra ellos a Balaam para que los maldijera, peor nuestro Dios cambió la maldición en bendición».
3 When they had heard the law, they separated from Israel every foreign element.	3 Cuando escucharon la Ley, separaron de Israel a todos los mestizos.
4 Before this, the priest Eliashib, who had been placed in charge of the chambers of the house of our God and who was an associate of Tobiah,	4 Antes de esto, Eliasib, el sacerdote encargado de las dependencias de la Casa de nuestro Dios, un pariente de Tobías,
5 had set aside for the latter's use a large chamber in which had previously been stored the cereal offerings, incense and utensils, the tithes in grain, wine, and oil allotted to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the offerings due the priests.	5 había acondicionado para este una habitación amplia, donde antes se depositaban las ofrendas, el incienso, los utensilios, el diezmo del trigo, del vino nuevo y del aceite fresco, o sea, lo que estaba mandado para los levitas, los cantores y los porteros, y lo reservado para los sacerdotes.
6 During all this time I had not been in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes, king of Babylon, I had gone back to the king. After due time, however, I asked leave of the king	6 Mientras tanto, yo estaba ausente de Jerusalén, porque el trigésimo segundo año de Artajerjes, rey de Babel, había ido a ver al rey. Al cabo de un tiempo, con el permiso del rey,
7 and returned to Jerusalem, where I discovered the evil thing that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in setting aside for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.	7 volví a Jerusalén y me enteré de la mala acción que había cometido Eliasib en beneficio de Tobías, al acondicionarle una sala en el recinto de la Casa de Dios.
8 This displeased me very much, and I had all of Tobiah's household goods thrown outside the chamber.	8 Esto me disgustó muchísimo, y arrojé fuera de su habitación todo el mobiliario de la casa de Tobías.
9 Then I gave orders to purify the chambers, and I had them replace there the utensils of the house of God, the cereal offerings, and the incense.	9 Luego mandé purificar las habitaciones e hice poner de nuevo allí los utensilios de la Casa de Dios, las ofrendas y el incienso.
10 I learned, too, that the portions due the Levites were no longer being given, so that the Levites and the singers who should have been carrying out the services had deserted, each man to his own field.	10 Supe también que no se entregaban las porciones a los levitas, y que los levitas y cantores encargados del culto se habían refugiado cada uno en su campo.
11 I took the magistrates to task, demanding, "Why is the house of God abandoned?" Then I brought the Levites together and had them resume their stations.	11 Entonces encaré a los magistrados y les dije: «¿Por qué se ha descuidado la Casa de Dios?». Luego reuní a los levitas y cantores y los restablecí en sus puestos.
12 All Judah once more brought in the tithes of grain, wine, and oil to the storerooms;	12 Todo Judá trajo a los depósitos los diezmos del trigo, del vino nuevo y del aceite fresco;
13 and in charge of the storerooms I appointed the priest Shelemiah, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah, one of the Levites, together with Hanan, son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, as their assistant; for these men were held to be trustworthy. It was their duty to make the distribution to their brethren.	13 y puse al frente de los depósitos al sacerdote Selemías, al escriba Sadoc, y a Pedaías, uno de los levitas, y como ayudante, a Janán, hijo de Zacur, hijo de Matanías, porque se los consideraba personas de confianza. Ellos eran los encargados de distribuir las porciones entre sus hermanos.
14 Remember this to my credit, O my God! Let not the devotion which I showed for the house of my God and its services be forgotten!	14 Por todo esto, ¡acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, y no olvides las obras de piedad que realicé por la Casa de mi Dios y por su culto!
15 In those days I perceived that men in Judah were treading the winepresses on the sabbath; that they were bringing in sheaves of grain, loading them on their asses, together with wine, grapes, figs, and every other kind of burden, and bringing them to Jerusalem on the sabbath day. I warned them to sell none of these victuals.	15 En aquellos días, vi gente en Judá que pisaba los lagares durante el sábado. Otros acarreaban gavillas y también cargaban sobre los asnos vino, uvas, higos y toda clase de cargas, para traerlos a Jerusalén en día sábado. Y yo los reprendí, mientras vendía sus mercaderías.
16 In Jerusalem itself the Tyrians who were resident there were importing fish and every other kind of merchandise and selling it to the Judahites on the sabbath.	16 Además, algunos tirios que se habían establecido en Jerusalén, hacían entrar pescado y toda clase de mercancías para venderlas durante el sábado a los judíos, en Jerusalén.
17 I took the nobles of Judah to task, demanding of them: "What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the sabbath day?	17 Yo encaré a los notables de Judá y les dije» «¡Ustedes obran mal profanando el día sábado!
18 Did not your fathers act in this same way, with the result that our God has brought all this evil upon us and upon this city? Would you add to the wrath against Israel by once more profaning the sabbath?"	18 Eso mismo hicieron sus padres, y por eso nuestro Dios envió tantas desgracias sobre nosotros y sobre esta ciudad. Al profanar el sábado, ustedes aumentan la ira de Dios contra Israel».
19 When the shadows were falling on the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I ordered the doors to be closed and forbade them to be reopened till after the sabbath. I posted some of my own men at the gates so that no burden might enter on the sabbath day.	19 Cuando las puertas de Jerusalén estaban en penumbra, antes del sábado, mandé que las cerraran y ordené que no las reabrieran hasta pasado el sábado. Además aposté a algunos de mis hombres junto a las puertas, para que no entrara ninguna carga el día sábado.
20 The merchants and sellers of various kinds of merchandise spent the night once or twice outside Jerusalem,	20 Una o dos veces, los traficantes y vendedores de toda clase de mercancías pasaron la noche fuera de Jerusalén.
21 but then I warned them, saying to them: "Why do you spend the night alongside the wall? If you keep this up, I will lay hands on you!" From that time on, they did not return on the sabbath.	21 Pero yo les advertí: «¿Por qué pasan la noche delante de la muralla? Si lo vuelven a hacer, los haré detener». Desde entonces, ya no volvieron más durante el sábado.
22 Then I ordered the Levites to purify themselves and to go and watch the gates, so that the sabbath day might be kept holy. This, too, remember in my favor, O my God, and have mercy on me in accordance with your great mercy!	22 Luego ordené a los levitas que se purificaran y fueran a custodiar las puertas, a fin de santificar el día sábado. También por esto, ¡acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, y ten piedad de mí, por tu gran fidelidad!
23 Also in those days I saw Jews who had married Ashdodite, Ammonite, or Moabite wives.	23 También vi en esos días que algunos judíos se habían casado con mujeres asdoditas, amonitas y moabitas.
24 Of their children, half spoke Ashdodite, and none of them knew how to speak Jewish; and so it was in regard to the languages of the various other peoples.	24 La mitad de sus hijos hablaban asdodeo u otras lenguas, pero ya no sabían hablar la lengua de los judíos.
25 I took them to task and cursed them; I had some of them beaten and their hair pulled out; and I adjured them by God: "You shall not marry your daughters to their sons nor take any of their daughters for your sons or for yourselves!	25 Yo los reprendí y los maldije, golpeé a algunos, les tiré de los cabellos y los conjuré en nombre de Dios, diciéndoles: «¡No entreguen sus hijas a los hijos de ellos, ni se casen con sus hijas, ni ustedes, ni sus hijos!»
26 Did not Solomon, the king of Israel, sin because of them? Though among the many nations there was no king like him, and though he was beloved of his God and God had made him king over all Israel, yet even he was made to sin by foreign women.	26 ¿No fue acaso por esto que pecó Salomón, rey de Israel? Entre tantas naciones, no había otro rey semejante a él; era amado por su Dios y Dios lo había hecho rey de todo Israel. Sin embargo, incluso a él, lo hicieron pecar las mujeres extranjeras.
27 Must it also be heard of you that you have done this same very great evil, betraying our God by marrying foreign women?"	27 ¿También de ustedes se oirá decir que cometen ese gran crimen de traicionar a nuestro Dios, casándose con mujeres extranjeras?
28 One of the sons of Joiada, son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite! I drove him from my presence.	28 Yo eché de mi lado a uno de los hijos de Ioiadá, hijo del Sumo Sacerdote Eliasib, que era yerno de Sambalat, el joronita.
29 Remember against them, O my God, how they defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites!	29 ¡Acuérdate de esta gente, Dios mío, porque mancillaron el sacerdocio y la alianza de los sacerdotes y de los levitas!
30 Thus I cleansed them of all foreign contamination. I established the various functions for the priests and Levites, so that each had his appointed task.	30 Yo los purifiqué de todo elemento extranjero. Establecí para los sacerdotes y los levitas reglamentos que determinaban la tarea de cada uno,
31 I also provided for the procurement of wood at stated times and for the first fruits. Remember this in my favor, O my God!	31 e hice lo mismo para la ofrenda de la leña, en los tiempos fijados, y para las primicias. ¡Acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, para mi bien!
