NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
He conscripted seventy thousand men to carry stone and eighty thousand to cut the stone in the mountains, and over these he placed three thousand six hundred overseers.1 Et numeravit septuaginta milia virorum portantium umeris et octoginta milia, qui caederent lapides in montibus, praepositosque eorum tria milia sescentos.
Moreover, Solomon sent this message to Huram, king of Tyre: "As you dealt with my father David, sending him cedars to build a house for his dwelling, so deal with me.2 Misit quoque ad Hiram regem Tyri dicens: “ Sicut egisti cum David patre meo et misisti ei ligna cedrina, ut aedificaret sibi domum ad habitandum in ea,
I intend to build a house for the honor of the LORD, my God, and to consecrate it to him, for the burning of fragrant incense in his presence, for the perpetual display of the showbread, for holocausts morning and evening, and for the sabbaths, new moons, and festivals of the LORD, our God: such is Israel's perpetual obligation.3 sic fac mecum, ut aedificem domum nomini Domini Dei mei, ut consecrem eam ad adolendum coram illo fumiganda aromata et ad propositionem panum sempiternam et ad holocautomata mane et vespere, sabbatis quoque et neomeniis et sollemnitatibus Domini Dei nostri in sempiternum, quae mandata sunt Israeli.
And the house I intend to build must be large, for our God is greater than all other gods.4 Domus enim, quam aedificare cupio, magna est; magnus est enim Deus noster super omnes deos.
Yet who is really able to build him a house, since the heavens and even the highest heavens cannot contain him? And who am I that I should build him a house, unless it be to offer incense in his presence?5 Quis ergo poterit praevalere, ut aedificet ei dignam domum? Si caelum et caeli caelorum capere eum nequeunt, quantus ego sum, ut possim aedificare ei domum? Sed ad hoc tantum, ut adoleatur incensum coram illo.
Now, send me men skilled at work in gold, silver, bronze and iron, in purple, crimson, and violet fabrics, and who know how to do engraved work, to join the craftsmen who are with me in Judah and Jerusalem, whom my father David appointed.6 Mitte ergo mihi virum eruditum, qui noverit operari in auro et argento, aere et ferro, purpura, coccino et hyacintho, et qui sciat sculpere caelaturas cum his artificibus, quos mecum habeo in Iudaea et Ierusalem, quos praeparavit David pater meus.
Also send me boards of cedar, cypress and cabinet wood from Lebanon, for I realize that your servants know how to cut the wood of the Lebanon. My servants will labor with yours7 Sed et ligna cedrina mitte mihi et arceuthina et pinea de Libano; scio enim quod servi tui noverint caedere ligna de Libano, et erunt servi mei cum servis tuis,
in order to prepare for me a great quantity of wood, since the house I intend to build must be lofty and wonderful.8 ut parentur mihi ligna plurima; domus enim, quam cupio aedificare, magna erit nimis et inclita.
I will furnish as food for your servants, the hewers who cut the wood, twenty thousand kors of wheat, twenty thousand kors of barley, twenty thousand measures of wine, and twenty thousand measures of oil."9 Praeterea operariis, qui caesuri sunt ligna, servis tuis dabo in cibaria tritici choros viginti milia et hordei choros totidem et vini viginti milia batos, olei quoque batos viginti milia ”.
Huram, king of Tyre, wrote an answer which he sent to Solomon: "Because the LORD loves his people, he has placed you over them as king."10 Dixit autem Hiram rex Tyri per litteras, quas miserat Salomoni: “ Quia dilexit Dominus populum suum, idcirco te regnare fecit super eum ”.
He added: "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who made heaven and earth, for having given King David a wise son of intelligence and understanding, who will build a house for the LORD and also a house for his royal estate.11 Et addidit dicens: “ Benedictus Dominus, Deus Israel, qui fecit caelum et terram, qui dedit David regi filium sapientem et eruditum et sensatum atque prudentem, ut aedificaret domum Domino et palatium sibi.
I am now sending you a craftsman of great skill, Huram-abi,12 Misi ergo tibi virum prudentem et scientissimum Hiram magistrum meum,
son of a Danite woman and of a father from Tyre; he knows how to work with gold, silver, bronze and iron, with stone and wood, with purple, violet, fine linen and crimson, and also how to do all kinds of engraved work and to devise every type of artistic work that may be given him and your craftsmen and the craftsmen of my lord David your father.13 filium mulieris de filiabus Dan, cuius pater fuit Tyrius, qui novit operari in auro et argento, aere et ferro et lapidibus et lignis, in purpura quoque et hyacintho et bysso et coccino, et qui scit caelare omnem sculpturam et adinvenire prudenter, quodcumque in opere necessarium est, cum artificibus tuis et cum artificibus domini mei David patris tui.
And now, let my lord send to his servants the wheat, barley, oil and wine which he has promised.14 Triticum ergo et hordeum et oleum et vinum, quae pollicitus es, domine mi, mitte servis tuis.
For our part, we will cut trees on Lebanon, as many as you need, and float them down to you at the port of Joppa, whence you may take them up to Jerusalem."15 Nos autem caedemus ligna de Libano, quot necessaria habueris, et applicabimus ea ratibus per mare in Ioppe; tuum autem erit transferre ea in Ierusalem ”.
Thereupon Solomon took a census of all the alien men who were in the land of Israel (following the census David his father had taken of them), who were found to number one hundred fifty-three thousand six hundred.16 Numeravit igitur Salomon omnes viros peregrinos, qui erant in terra Israel post dinumerationem, quam dinumeravit David pater eius; et inventi sunt centum quinquaginta milia et tria milia sescenti.
Of these he made seventy thousand carriers and eighty thousand cutters in the mountains, and three thousand six hundred overseers to keep the people working.17 Fecitque ex eis septuaginta milia, qui umeris onera portarent, et octoginta milia, qui lapides in montibus caederent; tria autem milia et sescentos praepositos operum populi.
