1 He conscripted seventy thousand men to carry stone and eighty thousand to cut the stone in the mountains, and over these he placed three thousand six hundred overseers.	1 Salomon engagea 70 000 porteurs, 80 000 hommes pour tailler la pierre dans les collines et 3 600 pour les surveiller.
2 Moreover, Solomon sent this message to Huram, king of Tyre: "As you dealt with my father David, sending him cedars to build a house for his dwelling, so deal with me.	2 Salomon envoya alors ce message à Hiram, roi de Tyr: “Fais pour moi comme pour mon père David lorsque tu lui as envoyé des cèdres pour construire son palais.
3 I intend to build a house for the honor of the LORD, my God, and to consecrate it to him, for the burning of fragrant incense in his presence, for the perpetual display of the showbread, for holocausts morning and evening, and for the sabbaths, new moons, and festivals of the LORD, our God: such is Israel's perpetual obligation.	3 À mon tour je vais construire une Maison pour le Nom de Yahvé mon Dieu; je la consacrerai, j’y ferai fumer devant lui l’encens parfumé, j’y aurai aussi les pains disposés en rangées à perpétuité; j’y offrirai des holocaustes le matin et le soir, durant les sabbats, les Nouvelles Lunes et les jours de fête en l’honneur de Yahvé notre Dieu, selon la loi fixée à jamais pour Israël.
4 And the house I intend to build must be large, for our God is greater than all other gods.	4 La maison que je vais construire sera vaste, car notre Dieu est plus grand que tous les dieux.
5 Yet who is really able to build him a house, since the heavens and even the highest heavens cannot contain him? And who am I that I should build him a house, unless it be to offer incense in his presence?	5 Pourtant personne ne peut réellement bâtir un temple pour Dieu, car les cieux et les cieux des cieux ne peuvent le contenir: qui donc pourrait prétendre lui construire une Maison pour y faire fumer l’encens devant lui?
6 Now, send me men skilled at work in gold, silver, bronze and iron, in purple, crimson, and violet fabrics, and who know how to do engraved work, to join the craftsmen who are with me in Judah and Jerusalem, whom my father David appointed.	6 Aussi envoie-moi un homme habile à travailler l’or, l’argent, le bronze, le fer, la pourpre rouge, les étoffes de couleur et la pourpre violette; qu’il soit également doué pour la gravure. Il travaillera avec mes artisans que David, mon père, a rassemblés en Juda et à Jérusalem.
7 Also send me boards of cedar, cypress and cabinet wood from Lebanon, for I realize that your servants know how to cut the wood of the Lebanon. My servants will labor with yours	7 Envoie-moi du Liban du bois de cèdre, du cyprès, du bois de santal, car je sais que tes serviteurs savent abattre des arbres du Liban; mes serviteurs travailleront avec les tiens.
8 in order to prepare for me a great quantity of wood, since the house I intend to build must be lofty and wonderful.	8 Ils me prépareront du bois en quantité, puisque la maison que je désire construire doit être grande et magnifique.
9 I will furnish as food for your servants, the hewers who cut the wood, twenty thousand kors of wheat, twenty thousand kors of barley, twenty thousand measures of wine, and twenty thousand measures of oil."	9 Je donnerai pour la nourriture de tes serviteurs, pour les bûcherons qui couperont les arbres, 20 000 mesures de blé, 20 000 mesures d’orge, 20 000 mesures de vin, 20 000 mesures d’huile.”
10 Huram, king of Tyre, wrote an answer which he sent to Solomon: "Because the LORD loves his people, he has placed you over them as king."	10 Dans une lettre envoyée au roi Salomon, Hiram, roi de Tyr, répondit: “Si Yahvé t’a fait roi, c’est parce qu’il aime son peuple.
11 He added: "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who made heaven and earth, for having given King David a wise son of intelligence and understanding, who will build a house for the LORD and also a house for his royal estate.	11 Béni soit Yahvé, Dieu d’Israël, celui qui a fait le ciel et la terre! Il a donné au roi David un fils sage, rempli de bon sens et d’intelligence, qui va construire une Maison pour Yahvé et un palais royal.
12 I am now sending you a craftsman of great skill, Huram-abi,	12 Je t’envoie donc un habile artisan, intelligent: Houram-Abi,
13 son of a Danite woman and of a father from Tyre; he knows how to work with gold, silver, bronze and iron, with stone and wood, with purple, violet, fine linen and crimson, and also how to do all kinds of engraved work and to devise every type of artistic work that may be given him and your craftsmen and the craftsmen of my lord David your father.	13 sa mère est une fille de Dan et son père est de Tyr. Il est habile à travailler l’or, l’argent, le bronze, le fer, la pierre, le bois, la pourpre rouge et violette, le lin fin et les étoffes de couleur, habile aussi pour toute sorte de gravure et pour exécuter tout projet qu’on lui soumet. Il travaillera avec tes artisans et ceux de mon seigneur David, ton père.
14 And now, let my lord send to his servants the wheat, barley, oil and wine which he has promised.	14 Aussi, que mon seigneur envoie dès maintenant à ses serviteurs le blé, l’orge, l’huile et le vin dont il a parlé.
15 For our part, we will cut trees on Lebanon, as many as you need, and float them down to you at the port of Joppa, whence you may take them up to Jerusalem."	15 De notre côté, nous allons abattre les arbres du Liban dont tu as besoin. Nous les enverrons par mer sur des radeaux jusqu’à Joppé; de là, tu les feras transporter à Jérusalem.”
16 Thereupon Solomon took a census of all the alien men who were in the land of Israel (following the census David his father had taken of them), who were found to number one hundred fifty-three thousand six hundred.	16 Salomon fit alors le compte de tous les étrangers qui vivaient sur la terre d’Israël, d’après le recensement que David son père avait fait; il en dénombra 153 600.
17 Of these he made seventy thousand carriers and eighty thousand cutters in the mountains, and three thousand six hundred overseers to keep the people working.	17 Il en désigna 70 000 comme porteurs, 80 000 pour extraire les pierres dans la montagne et 3 600 comme surveillants pour faire travailler le peuple.
