1 When Joab, son of Zeruiah, observed how the king felt toward Absalom,	1 In seguito lo spirito del re cessò di insorgere contro Assalonne, perché gli si era quetato il dolore della morte di Amnon, e Joab figlio di Zeruia si accorse che il cuore del re si rivolgeva ora verso Assalonne.
2 he sent to Tekoa and brought from there a gifted woman, to whom he said: "Pretend to be in mourning. Put on mourning apparel and do not anoint yourself with oil, that you may appear to be a woman who has been long in mourning for a departed one.	2 Allora Joab mandò a prendere a Tekoa una donna accorta e le disse: «Mettiti in pianto, vestiti a lutto e non ungerti d’olio, così da parere una donna che, ecco, da molto tempo pianga un morto:
3 Then go to the king and speak to him in this manner." And Joab instructed her what to say.	3 ti presenterai al re e gli dirai così e così»; e Joab le mise in bocca le parole.
4 So the woman of Tekoa went to the king and fell prostrate to the ground in homage, saying, "Help, your majesty!"	4 La donna tekoita venne dal re, si prostrò faccia a terra e lo adorò; poi esclamò: «Aiuto, o re, aiuto!»
5 The king said to her, "What do you want?" She replied: "Alas, I am a widow; my husband is dead.	5 Le disse il re: «Che hai?» Essa rispose: «Ahimè! Sono una vedova: quando morì mio marito,
6 Your servant had two sons, who quarreled in the field. There being no one to part them, one of them struck his brother and killed him.	6 la tua schiava aveva due figli: Questi due vennero alle mani in campagna e, poiché non c'era chi si interponesse fra di loro, l’uno colpì il proprio fratello e lo uccise.
7 Then the whole clan confronted your servant and demanded: 'Give up the one who killed his brother. We must put him to death for the life of his brother whom he has slain; we must extinguish the heir also.' Thus they will quench my remaining hope and leave my husband neither name nor posterity upon the earth."	7 Ed ecco, si è levata tutta la famiglia contro la tua schiava e hanno detto: “Consegna l’assassino di suo fratello: lo metteremo a morte per la vita di suo fratello che lui ha trucidato!» Toglieranno così di mezzo anche l’erede estingueranno l’unica mia favilla in modo che a mio marito non rimarrà nome né posterità sopra la faccia della terra!»
8 The king then said to the woman: "Go home. I will issue a command on your behalf."	8 Il re disse alla donna: «Torna pure a casa perché io darò ordini in proposito».
9 The woman of Tekoa answered him, "Let me and my family be to blame, my lord king; you and your throne are innocent."	9 Ma la donna tekoita disse al re: «O mio signore re la colpa sia sopra di me e sopra la casa di mio padre! Il re e il suo trono ne andranno esenti!»
10 Then the king said, "If anyone says a word to you, have him brought to me, and he shall not touch you again."	10 Il re rispose: «Se alcuno osasse parlartene ancora, tu conducilo da me e non ti annoierà più»,
11 But she went on to say, "Please, your majesty, keep in mind the LORD your God, that the avenger of blood may not go too far in destruction and that my son may not be done away with." He replied, "As the LORD lives, not a hair of your son shall fall to the ground."	11 Essa disse: «Il re si ricordi di Jahvè tuo Dio affinché il vendicatore del sangue non aumenti la strage e mio figlio non venga tolto di mezzo!» Egli rispose: «Per la vita di Jahvè, non cadrà a terra neppure un solo capello di tuo figlio!»
12 The woman continued, "Please let your servant say still another word to my lord the king." He replied, "Speak."	12 Allora la donna disse: «Possa la tua schiava dire una parola al mio signore re». Egli rispose: «Parla».
13 So the woman said: "Why, then, do you think of this same kind of thing against the people of God? In pronouncing as he has, the king shows himself guilty, for not bringing back his own banished son.	13 La donna disse: «Come dunque hai pensato una cosa come questa contro il popolo di Dio e, proferendo il re questa parola, si mette in qualche modo nel torto, vale a dire che il re non faccia tornare colui che egli ha bandito?
14 We must indeed die; we are then like water that is poured out on the ground and cannot be gathered up. Yet, though God does not bring back life, he does take thought how not to banish anyone from him.	14 Infatti è stabilito che si muoia e, come l’acqua versata a terra che non si può più raccogliere, così Dio non ridà la vita. Escogiti dunque il re qualche maniera in modo che non continui a essere bandito lontano da lui quegli che fu bandito!
15 And now, if I have presumed to speak of this matter to your majesty, it is because the people have given me cause to fear. And so your servant thought: 'Let me speak to the king. Perhaps he will grant the petition of his maidservant.	15 Del resto, se io sono venuta a dire al re queste cose, è perché certa gente mi ha messo paura; la tua schiava ha pensato: “Bene, parlerò al re: forse il re manderà a effetto la parola della sua schiava;
16 For the king must surely consent to free his servant from the grasp of one who would seek to destroy me and my son as well from God's inheritance.'"	16 poiché certo il re mi ascolterà quanto a liberare la sua schiava dalle. mani di colui che cerca di togliere di mezzo me e mio figlio a un tempo dall’eredità di Jahvè!”».
17 And the woman concluded: "Let the word of my lord the king provide a resting place; indeed, my lord the king is like an angel of God, evaluating good and bad. The LORD your God be with you."	17 La donna concluse: «La parola del mio signore re sia causa di pace, perché nel comprendere il bene e il male il mio signore re è come l’angelo di Dio. Jahvè tuo Dio sia con te!»
18 The king answered the woman, "Now do not conceal from me anything I may ask you!" The woman said, "Let my lord the king speak."	18 Il re intervenne e disse alla donna: «Non celarmi nulla di quanto ti chiederò». La donna rispose: «Parli il mio signore re».
19 So the king asked, "Is Joab involved with you in all this?" And the woman answered: "As you live, my lord the king, it is just as your majesty has said, and not otherwise. It was your servant Joab who instructed me and told your servant all these things she was to say.	19 Disse il re: «C'è forse la mano di Joab con te in tutto questo?» Rispose la donna: «Per la tua vita, mio signore re, non c’è davvero nulla né a destra né a sinistra di quanto ha detto il mio signore re! Sì, il tuo servitore Joab mi ha dato quest’ordine e ha messo in bocca alla tua schiava queste parole.
20 Your servant Joab did this to come at the issue in a roundabout way. But my lord is as wise as an angel of God, so that he knows all things on earth."	20 Allo scopo di mutare l’aspetto della faccenda il tuo servitore Joab ha agito così, ma il mio signore è saggio della saggezza dell’angelo di Dio così da capire tutto ciò che è sulla terra!»
21 Then the king said to Joab: "I hereby grant this request. Go, therefore, and bring back young Absalom."	21 Il re allora disse a Joab: «Ecco, dunque, faccio questa cosa: va’, riconduci il giovane Assalonne».
22 Falling prostrate to the ground in homage and blessing the king, Joab said, "This day I know that I am in good favor with you, my lord the king, since the king has granted the request of his servant."	22 Joab si prostrò faccia a terra, adorò il re e lo ringraziò. Poi Joab disse: «Oggi il tuo servitore sa di aver trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, o mio signore re, poiché il re ha mandato a effetto la parola del suo servitore!»
23 Joab then went off to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.	23 Joab dunque si levò e andò a Gheshur, donde ricondusse Assalonne a Gerusalemme.
24 But the king said, "Let him go to his own house; he shall not appear before me." So Absalom went off to his house and did not appear before the king.	24 Ma il re disse: «Se ne vada alla sua casa senza vedere la mia faccia!» Assalonne sé ne andò a casa senza vedere la faccia del re.
25 In all Israel there was not a man who could so be praised for his beauty as Absalom, who was without blemish from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.	25 In tutto Israele non c’era uomo bello come Assalonne, degno di lode oltre ogni dire: dalla pianta dei piedi alla sommità del capo non c’era in lui difetto.
26 When he shaved his head--which he used to do at the end of every year, because his hair became too heavy for him--the hair weighed two hundred shekels according to the royal standard.	26 Quando poi si radeva il capo — ed egli si radeva la capigliatura alla fine di ogni anno, perché era troppo pesante per lui ed egli si radeva — allora la massa dei: suoi capelli pesava duecento sicli secondo il peso del re.
27 Absalom had three sons born to him, besides a daughter named Tamar, who was a beautiful woman.	27 Ad Assalonne erano nati tre figli e una figlia chiamata Maacha, che fu donna bella di aspetto e divenne moglie di Roboamo figlio di Salomone, al quale generò Abiam.
28 Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years without appearing before the king.	28 Assalonne dunque abitò a Gerusalemme due anni senza mai vedere il re.
29 Then he summoned Joab to send him to the king, but Joab would not come to him. Although he summoned him a second time, Joab refused to come.	29 Infine Assalonne fece chiamare Joab per mandarlo dal re, ma quegli non volle venire da lui; lo fece chiamare una seconda volta e quegli non volle venire.
30 He therefore instructed his servants: "You see Joab's field that borders mine, on which he has barley. Go, set it on fire." And so Absalom's servants set the field on fire. Joab's farmhands came to him with torn garments and reported to him what had been done.	30 Allora disse ai suoi servitori: «Guardate là quel campo di Joab presso il mio, dove egli ha l’orzo: andate e appiccate il fuoco». I servitori di Assalonne appiccarono il fuoco al campo. Vennero i servitori di Joab da lui con le vesti stracciate e gli dissero: «I servitori di Assalonne hanno appiccato il fuoco al campo!»
31 At this, Joab went to Absalom in his house and asked him, "Why have your servants set my field on fire?"	31 Allora Joab si alzò, andò in casa da Assalonne e gli disse: «Perché i tuoi servitori hanno appiccato il fuoco al mio campo?»
32 Absalom answered Joab: "I was summoning you to come here, that I may send you to the king to say: 'Why did I come back from Geshur? I would be better off if I were still there!' Now, let me appear before the king. If I am guilty, let him put me to death."	32 Assalonne gli rispose: «Ecco, ti avevo fatto chiamare dicendo: Vieni qua, perché io ti mandi a dire al re: “Perché sono tornato da Gheshur? Meglio sarebbe per me che io fossi ancora là!”. Ora dunque voglio vedere la faccia del re! Se invece in me c’è colpa, mi uccida pure!»
33 Joab went to the king and reported this. The king then called Absalom, who came to him and in homage fell on his face to the ground before the king. Then the king kissed him.	33 Allora Joab andò dal re e gli raccontò la cosa. E lui chiamò Assalonne che andò dal re e si prostrò faccia a terra in adorazione di fronte al re. Il re baciò Assalonne.
