1 When Joab, son of Zeruiah, observed how the king felt toward Absalom,	1 - Joab figlio di Sarvia accortosi che il cuore del re erasi mitigato verso Absalom,
2 he sent to Tekoa and brought from there a gifted woman, to whom he said: "Pretend to be in mourning. Put on mourning apparel and do not anoint yourself with oil, that you may appear to be a woman who has been long in mourning for a departed one.	2 mandò a Tecua e ne fece venire una donna saggia e le disse: «Fingi di piangere, indossa una veste da lutto e non ungerti di olio come se fosti donna che da molto tempo piange un morto.
3 Then go to the king and speak to him in this manner." And Joab instructed her what to say.	3 Entrerai dal re e parlerai a lui in questi termini», e Joab le suggerì le parole da dire.
4 So the woman of Tekoa went to the king and fell prostrate to the ground in homage, saying, "Help, your majesty!"	4 Come adunque la donna di Tecua si trovò alla presenza del re, cadde colla faccia a terra, l'adorò e gli disse: «Salvami, o re».
5 The king said to her, "What do you want?" She replied: "Alas, I am a widow; my husband is dead.	5 Il re le domandò: «Che cosa hai?». Ed ella rispose: «Ohimè, sono una povera vedova, poichè mi è morto il marito!
6 Your servant had two sons, who quarreled in the field. There being no one to part them, one of them struck his brother and killed him.	6 La tua ancella avea due figliuoli, che vennero a rissa in aperta campagna, dove non eravi alcuno che potesse trattenerli, e uno percosse l'altro e lo uccise.
7 Then the whole clan confronted your servant and demanded: 'Give up the one who killed his brother. We must put him to death for the life of his brother whom he has slain; we must extinguish the heir also.' Thus they will quench my remaining hope and leave my husband neither name nor posterity upon the earth."	7 Ora ecco insorgere tutta la parentela contro la tua ancella e dire: - Consegnaci chi ha ucciso il fratello, affinchè lo uccidiamo per vendicare il fratello da lui ucciso e sia tolto dal mondo l'erede. - E così cercano di estinguere la scintilla che ancor mi è restata e non vogliono lasciar a mio marito nè un nome, nè una discendenza sulla faccia della terra».
8 The king then said to the woman: "Go home. I will issue a command on your behalf."	8 Disse il re alla donna: «Va' a casa, e io darò ordini per te».
9 The woman of Tekoa answered him, "Let me and my family be to blame, my lord king; you and your throne are innocent."	9 Allora la donna di Tecua disse al re: «Sopra di me, o re mio signore, cada la colpa e sopra la casa del padre mio, ma il re e il suo trono non ne siano responsabili».
10 Then the king said, "If anyone says a word to you, have him brought to me, and he shall not touch you again."	10 E il re soggiunse: «Chiunque volesse contrariarti conducimelo dinanzi e gli passerà la voglia di darti noia».
11 But she went on to say, "Please, your majesty, keep in mind the LORD your God, that the avenger of blood may not go too far in destruction and that my son may not be done away with." He replied, "As the LORD lives, not a hair of your son shall fall to the ground."	11 Al che essa disse: «Ricordisi il re del Signore Iddio suo, affinchè non siano accresciuti i parenti destinati a vendicare il sangue e non uccidano il figliuol mio». E il re le rispose: «Viva il Signore: non cadrà alcuno dei capelli del figliuol tuo sulla terra».
12 The woman continued, "Please let your servant say still another word to my lord the king." He replied, "Speak."	12 Disse allora la donna: «Permetti che la tua ancella dica una parola al re mio signore», ed egli: «Parla».
13 So the woman said: "Why, then, do you think of this same kind of thing against the people of God? In pronouncing as he has, the king shows himself guilty, for not bringing back his own banished son.	13 Continuò la donna: «Perchè hai tu pensato di fare una cosa simile contro il popolo di Dio e perchè il re ha detto questa parola in modo da peccare non volendo richiamare quegli che fu scacciato?
14 We must indeed die; we are then like water that is poured out on the ground and cannot be gathered up. Yet, though God does not bring back life, he does take thought how not to banish anyone from him.	14 Tutti siamo mortali e siamo come acque sparse sulla terra che non si possono più raccogliere. Dio poi non vuole che alcuno perisca, ma egli riflette e pensa che non debba interamente perire chi fu scacciato.
15 And now, if I have presumed to speak of this matter to your majesty, it is because the people have given me cause to fear. And so your servant thought: 'Let me speak to the king. Perhaps he will grant the petition of his maidservant.	15 Ora adunque io venni per dir questo al re, mio signore, alla presenza del popolo; e la tua ancella disse: - Parlerò al re e forse il re farà quanto dirà a lui la sua ancella: -
16 For the king must surely consent to free his servant from the grasp of one who would seek to destroy me and my son as well from God's inheritance.'"	16 e il re la esaudì col voler liberata la sua ancella dalle mani di tutti quelli che volevano togliere me e il mio figliuolo dalla eredità di Dio.
17 And the woman concluded: "Let the word of my lord the king provide a resting place; indeed, my lord the king is like an angel of God, evaluating good and bad. The LORD your God be with you."	17 Dica adunque la tua ancella che la parola del re mio signore diventi come un sacrificio, poichè il re mio signore è simile a un angelo di Dio, il quale non si commuove nè per la benedizione nè per la maledizione; perciò anche il Signore Iddio tuo è con te».
18 The king answered the woman, "Now do not conceal from me anything I may ask you!" The woman said, "Let my lord the king speak."	18 Per tutta risposta il re disse alla donna: «Non nascondermi ciò che io ti domando». E la donna disse: «Parla, o re mio signore».
19 So the king asked, "Is Joab involved with you in all this?" And the woman answered: "As you live, my lord the king, it is just as your majesty has said, and not otherwise. It was your servant Joab who instructed me and told your servant all these things she was to say.	19 Il re domandò: «In tutto ciò che mi hai detto non c'entra la mano di Joab?». Rispose la donna e disse: «Per la salvezza della tua vita, o re mio signore, non vi è nulla che sfugga nè a sinistra nè a destra di tutte quelle cose che ha detto il re, mio signore; fu il tuo servo Joab, che comandò a me e pose in bocca alla tua ancella tutte queste parole.
20 Your servant Joab did this to come at the issue in a roundabout way. But my lord is as wise as an angel of God, so that he knows all things on earth."	20 Fu il tuo servo Joab che mi comandò di proporti la parabola; ma tu, o re mio signore, sei sapiente, come è sapiente un angelo di Dio e conosci tutto ciò che esiste al mondo».
21 Then the king said to Joab: "I hereby grant this request. Go, therefore, and bring back young Absalom."	21 Allora il re disse a Joab: «Eccomi placato e disposto a fare il tuo volere; va' e richiama il mio figlio Absalom».
22 Falling prostrate to the ground in homage and blessing the king, Joab said, "This day I know that I am in good favor with you, my lord the king, since the king has granted the request of his servant."	22 Prostrato Joab a terra adorò e benedisse il re e disse: «Oggi il tuo servo ha conosciuto di aver trovato grazia negli occhi tuoi, o re mio signore, poichè hai fatto quanto il tuo servo ha detto».
23 Joab then went off to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.	23 Poi Joab si levò e partì alla volta di Gessur e ricondusse Absalom a Gerusalemme.
24 But the king said, "Let him go to his own house; he shall not appear before me." So Absalom went off to his house and did not appear before the king.	24 Davide però disse: «Ritorni a casa sua e non vegga la mia faccia». E Absalom tornò a casa e non comparì dinanzi al re.
25 In all Israel there was not a man who could so be praised for his beauty as Absalom, who was without blemish from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.	25 Absalom era bellissimo d'aspetto e non eravi in tutto Israele uomo più avvenente di lui. Dalla pianta dei piedi fino alla sommità del capo non aveva difetti.
26 When he shaved his head--which he used to do at the end of every year, because his hair became too heavy for him--the hair weighed two hundred shekels according to the royal standard.	26 E quando si tagliava la chioma (una volta all'anno se la tagliava, perchè la capigliatura gli pesava troppo) i capelli della sua testa pesavano duecento sicli di peso pubblico.
27 Absalom had three sons born to him, besides a daughter named Tamar, who was a beautiful woman.	27 Nacquero ad Absalom tre figli ed una figlia di nome Tamar di bell'aspetto.
28 Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years without appearing before the king.	28 Absalom restò in Gerusalemme per due anni senza vedere la faccia del re.
29 Then he summoned Joab to send him to the king, but Joab would not come to him. Although he summoned him a second time, Joab refused to come.	29 In seguito Absalom fece chiamare Joab per mandarlo dal re, ma Joab non volle venire da lui, e avendolo mandato a chiamare una seconda volta e non avendo egli voluto venire,
30 He therefore instructed his servants: "You see Joab's field that borders mine, on which he has barley. Go, set it on fire." And so Absalom's servants set the field on fire. Joab's farmhands came to him with torn garments and reported to him what had been done.	30 disse ai suoi servi: «Voi conoscete il campo di Joab, posto accanto al mio campo, dove trovasi orzo maturo da mietere; andate a mettervi fuoco». I servi di Absalom misero fuoco alla mèsse. E venuti i servi di Joab colle vesti lacerate a dirgli: «I servi di Absalom hanno dato fuoco a una parte del campo»,
31 At this, Joab went to Absalom in his house and asked him, "Why have your servants set my field on fire?"	31 Joab si levò e venne alla casa di Absalom e gli disse: «Perchè i tuoi servi hanno appiccato il fuoco alla mia mèsse?».
32 Absalom answered Joab: "I was summoning you to come here, that I may send you to the king to say: 'Why did I come back from Geshur? I would be better off if I were still there!' Now, let me appear before the king. If I am guilty, let him put me to death."	32 Absalom rispose: «Ti mandai a pregare di venire da me, perchè voleva mandarti dal re per dirgli: - Perchè son io venuto da Gessur? Era assai meglio per me che me ne restassi colà. Pregoti adunque ch'io abbia a vedere la faccia del re. Che se egli è sempre memore del mio misfatto, mi uccida -».
33 Joab went to the king and reported this. The king then called Absalom, who came to him and in homage fell on his face to the ground before the king. Then the king kissed him.	33 Andatosene Joab dal re gli raccontò tutto ciò; Absalom fu chiamato e fu ammesso al cospetto del re e si prosternò colla faccia dinanzi a lui e il re baciò Absalom.
