1 When Joab, son of Zeruiah, observed how the king felt toward Absalom,	1 Joab, hijo de Seruiá, comprendió que el rey echaba de menos a Absalón.
2 he sent to Tekoa and brought from there a gifted woman, to whom he said: "Pretend to be in mourning. Put on mourning apparel and do not anoint yourself with oil, that you may appear to be a woman who has been long in mourning for a departed one.	2 Entonces hizo venir a Técoa a una mujer muy hábil y le dijo: «Vas a fingir que estás de duelo: vístete de luto, no te perfumes y aparenta ser una mujer que hace ya mucho tiempo está de duelo por su difunto.
3 Then go to the king and speak to him in this manner." And Joab instructed her what to say.	3 Luego te presentarás ante el rey y le repetirás exactamente lo que yo te diga». Y Joab le explicó todo lo que debía decir.
4 So the woman of Tekoa went to the king and fell prostrate to the ground in homage, saying, "Help, your majesty!"	4 La mujer se presentó ante el rey y, postrándose con el rostro en tierra, exclamó: «¡Auxilio, rey!».
5 The king said to her, "What do you want?" She replied: "Alas, I am a widow; my husband is dead.	5 «¿Qué te pasa, le preguntó el rey. Ella respondió: «¡Pobre de mí! Yo soy una viuda; mi marido ha muerto,
6 Your servant had two sons, who quarreled in the field. There being no one to part them, one of them struck his brother and killed him.	6 y tu servidora tenía dos hijos, que una vez se pelearon en el campo. Como no había nadie para separarlos, uno hirió al otro y lo mató.
7 Then the whole clan confronted your servant and demanded: 'Give up the one who killed his brother. We must put him to death for the life of his brother whom he has slain; we must extinguish the heir also.' Thus they will quench my remaining hope and leave my husband neither name nor posterity upon the earth."	7 Y ahora toda la familia se ha levantado contra tu servidora, diciendo: «Entrega al fratricida; vamos a darle muerte para vengar al hermano que él asesinó y acabar así con el heredero». De esta manera apagarán la brasa que aún me queda, privando a mi marido de un nombre y un sobreviviente sobre la faz de la tierra».
8 The king then said to the woman: "Go home. I will issue a command on your behalf."	8 El rey dijo a la mujer: «Vete a tu casa. Yo me encargaré de este asunto».
9 The woman of Tekoa answered him, "Let me and my family be to blame, my lord king; you and your throne are innocent."	9 La mujer de Técoa le respondió: «¡Rey, mi señor, que la falta recaiga sobre mí y sobre la casa de mi padre! El rey y su trono están libres de culpa».
10 Then the king said, "If anyone says a word to you, have him brought to me, and he shall not touch you again."	10 «Al que te diga algo, añadió el rey, tráelo aquí y no volverá a molestarte más».
11 But she went on to say, "Please, your majesty, keep in mind the LORD your God, that the avenger of blood may not go too far in destruction and that my son may not be done away with." He replied, "As the LORD lives, not a hair of your son shall fall to the ground."	11 La mujer insistió: «¡Dígnese el rey pronunciar el nombre del Señor, tu Dios, para que el vengador de la sangre no aumente la desgracia, eliminando a mi hijo!». Entonces el rey declaró: «¡Por la vida del Señor, no caerá en tierra ni un solo cabello de tu hijo!».
12 The woman continued, "Please let your servant say still another word to my lord the king." He replied, "Speak."	12 La mujer siguió diciendo: «¿Podría esta servidora decirle una palabra a mi señor, el rey?». «Habla», replicó él.
13 So the woman said: "Why, then, do you think of this same kind of thing against the people of God? In pronouncing as he has, the king shows himself guilty, for not bringing back his own banished son.	13 Ella añadió: «¿Por qué has pensado semejante cosa contra el pueblo de Dios? Con las palabras que acaba de pronunciar, el rey se ha confesado culpable, ya que no deja volver al que ha desterrado.
14 We must indeed die; we are then like water that is poured out on the ground and cannot be gathered up. Yet, though God does not bring back life, he does take thought how not to banish anyone from him.	14 Todos tenemos que morir, y como el agua que se derrama en tierra y ya no se puede recoger. Dios no vuelve a dar la vida. Que el rey haga entonces un plan, para que el exiliado no esté más tiempo desterrado lejos de nosotros.
15 And now, if I have presumed to speak of this matter to your majesty, it is because the people have given me cause to fear. And so your servant thought: 'Let me speak to the king. Perhaps he will grant the petition of his maidservant.	15 Si ahora vengo a hablar de este asunto al rey, mi señor, es porque el pueblo me ha atemorizado. Por eso pensé: «Es preciso que hable con el rey, a ver si hace lo que le digo.
16 For the king must surely consent to free his servant from the grasp of one who would seek to destroy me and my son as well from God's inheritance.'"	16 Seguramente el rey consentirá en librarme del hombre que quiere extirparnos, a mí y a mi hijo, de la herencia de Dios».
17 And the woman concluded: "Let the word of my lord the king provide a resting place; indeed, my lord the king is like an angel of God, evaluating good and bad. The LORD your God be with you."	17 Tu servidora pensó además: «Que la palabra del rey nos traiga la calma. Porque él es como un ángel de Dios para distinguir el bien del mal» ¡Que el Señor, tu dios, esté contigo!».
18 The king answered the woman, "Now do not conceal from me anything I may ask you!" The woman said, "Let my lord the king speak."	18 Entonces el rey tomó la palabra y dijo a la mujer: «Por favor, no me ocultes nada de lo que te voy a preguntar». La mujer respondió: «Dígnese hablar mi señor, el rey».
19 So the king asked, "Is Joab involved with you in all this?" And the woman answered: "As you live, my lord the king, it is just as your majesty has said, and not otherwise. It was your servant Joab who instructed me and told your servant all these things she was to say.	19 El rey continuó diciendo: «¿No está la mano de Joab detrás de todo esto?». La mujer asintió: «¡Por tu vida, mi señor y rey, tu pregunta ha dado justo en el blanco! Sí, tu servidor Joab es el que me mandó y puso todas estas palabras en boca de tu servidora.
20 Your servant Joab did this to come at the issue in a roundabout way. But my lord is as wise as an angel of God, so that he knows all things on earth."	20 Lo hizo para no encarar el asunto de frente. Pero mi señor posee la sabiduría de un ángel de Dios y sabe todo lo que pasa en la tierra».
21 Then the king said to Joab: "I hereby grant this request. Go, therefore, and bring back young Absalom."	21 Luego el rey dijo a Joab: «Está bien. Haré lo que has pedido: ve a traer al joven Absalón».
22 Falling prostrate to the ground in homage and blessing the king, Joab said, "This day I know that I am in good favor with you, my lord the king, since the king has granted the request of his servant."	22 Joab cayó con el rostro en tierra, bendijo al rey y dijo: «Rey, mi señor, ahora sé que cuento con tu favor, porque has accedido a mi demanda».
23 Joab then went off to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.	23 Después Joab partió para Guesur y trajo a Absalón a Jerusalén.
24 But the king said, "Let him go to his own house; he shall not appear before me." So Absalom went off to his house and did not appear before the king.	24 Pero el rey dijo: «Que se retire a su casa y no venga a verme». Absalón se retiró a su casa y no se presentó ante el rey.
25 In all Israel there was not a man who could so be praised for his beauty as Absalom, who was without blemish from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.	25 No había en todo Israel un hombre más apuesto que Absalón, ni tan elogiado como él: desde la planta de los pies hasta la cabeza, no tenía ningún defecto.
26 When he shaved his head--which he used to do at the end of every year, because his hair became too heavy for him--the hair weighed two hundred shekels according to the royal standard.	26 Cuando se cortaba la cabellera –y lo hacía cada año, porque le resultaba demasiado pesada– el pelo cortado pesaba doscientos siclos, según la medida del rey.
27 Absalom had three sons born to him, besides a daughter named Tamar, who was a beautiful woman.	27 A Absalón le nacieron tres hijos y una hija, llamada Tamar, que era muy hermosa.
28 Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years without appearing before the king.	28 Absalón estuvo tres años en Jerusalén sin ver al rey.
29 Then he summoned Joab to send him to the king, but Joab would not come to him. Although he summoned him a second time, Joab refused to come.	29 Entonces mandó a buscar a Joab para enviarlo ante el rey, pero él no quiso venir. Lo hizo llamar por segunda vez, y tampoco quiso venir.
30 He therefore instructed his servants: "You see Joab's field that borders mine, on which he has barley. Go, set it on fire." And so Absalom's servants set the field on fire. Joab's farmhands came to him with torn garments and reported to him what had been done.	30 Por eso, Absalón dijo a sus servidores: «Ustedes saben que Joab tiene un campo al lado del mío, donde ha sembrado cebada. Vayan a prenderle fuego». Y los servidores de Absalón incendiaron el campo.
31 At this, Joab went to Absalom in his house and asked him, "Why have your servants set my field on fire?"	31 Joab fue a ver a Absalón a su casa y le dijo: «¿Por qué tus servidores han incendiado el campo que me pertenece?».
32 Absalom answered Joab: "I was summoning you to come here, that I may send you to the king to say: 'Why did I come back from Geshur? I would be better off if I were still there!' Now, let me appear before the king. If I am guilty, let him put me to death."	32 Absalón replicó a Joab: «Yo te mandé a decir que vinieras, a fin de enviarte al rey con este mensaje: «¿Para qué he vuelto de Guesur? ¡Más me valdría estar todavía allí! Ahora quiero comparecer ante el rey, y si tengo alguna culpa, que me haga morir».
33 Joab went to the king and reported this. The king then called Absalom, who came to him and in homage fell on his face to the ground before the king. Then the king kissed him.	33 Joab fue a ver al rey y le llevó la noticia. Entonces el rey llamó a Absalón. Este se presentó ante él, se postró con el rostro en tierra, y el lo abrazó.
