Genesis 43

1 Now the famine in the land grew more severe.	1 Cependant la famine désolait extraordinairement tout le pays;
2 So when they had used up all the rations they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, "Go back and procure us a little more food."	2 Et le blé que les enfants de Jacob avaient apporté d'Egypte étant consommé, Jacob leur dit: Retournez en Egypte, et achetez-nous un peu de blé.
3 But Judah replied: "The man strictly warned us, 'You shall not appear in my presence unless your brother is with you.'	3 Juda lui répondit: Celui qui commande là-bas nous a déclaré sa volonté avec serment, en disant: Vous ne verrez point mon visage, à moins que vous n'ameniez avec vous le plus jeune de vos frères.
4 If you are willing to let our brother go with us, we will go down to procure food for you.	4 Si donc vous voulez l'envoyer avec nous, nous irons ensemble, et nous achèterons ce qui vous est nécessaire.
5 But if you are not willing, we will not go down, because the man told us, 'You shall not appear in my presence unless your brother is with you.'"	5 Si vous ne le voulez pas, nous n'irons point; car cet homme, comme nous vous l'avons dit plusieurs fois, nous a déclaré que nous ne verrions pas son visage si nous n'avions avec nous notre jeune frère.
6 Israel demanded, "Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man that you had another brother?"	6 Israël leur dit: C'est pour mon malheur que vous lui avez appris que vous aviez encore un autre frère.
7 They answered: "The man kept asking about ourselves and our family: 'Is your father still living? Do you have another brother?' We had to answer his questions. How could we know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down here'?"	7 Mais ils lui répondirent: Il nous demanda par ordre toute la suite de notre famille: si notre père vivait, si nous avions un autre frère; et nous lui avons répondu conformément à ce qu'il nous avait demandé. Pouvions-nous deviner qu'il nous dirait: Amenez avec vous votre frère?
8 Then Judah urged his father Israel: "Let the boy go with me, that we may be off and on our way if you and we and our children are to keep from starving to death.	8 Juda dit encore à son père: Envoyez l'enfant avec moi, afin que nous puissions partir et avoir de quoi vivre, et que nous ne mourions pas, nous et nos petits enfants.
9 I myself will stand surety for him. You can hold me responsible for him. If I fail to bring him back, to set him in your presence, you can hold it against me forever.	9 Je me charge de cet enfant, et c'est à moi que vous en demanderez compte. Si je ne vous le ramène pas, et si je ne vous le rends pas, je consens que vous ne me pardonniez jamais cette faute.
10 Had we not dilly-dallied, we could have been there and back twice by now!"	10 Si nous n'avions point tant différé, nous serions déjà revenus une seconde fois.
11 Their father Israel then told them: "If it must be so, then do this: Put some of the land's best products in your baggage and take them down to the man as gifts: some balm and honey, gum and resin, and pistachios and almonds.	11 Israël, leur père, leur dit donc: Si c'est une nécessité absolue, faites ce que vous voudrez. Prenez avec vous des plus excellents fruits de ce pays-ci, pour en faire présent à celui qui commande: un peu de résine, de miel, de storax, de myrrhe, de térébenthine et d'amandes.
12 Also take extra money along, for you must return the amount that was put back in the mouths of your bags; it may have been a mistake.	12 Portez aussi deux fois autant d'argent qu'au premier voyage, et reportez celui que vous avez trouvé dans vos sacs, de peur que ce ne soit une méprise.
13 Take your brother, too, and be off on your way back to the man.	13 Enfin menez votre frère avec vous, et allez vers cet homme.
14 May God Almighty dispose the man to be merciful toward you, so that he may let your other brother go, as well as Benjamin. As for me, if I am to suffer bereavement, I shall suffer it."	14 Je prie mon Dieu tout-puissant de vous le rendre favorable, afin qu'il renvoie avec vous votre frère qu'il tient prisonnier, et Benjamain; cependant je demeurerai seul, comme si j'étais sans enfants.
15 So the men got the gifts, took double the amount of money with them, and, accompanied by Benjamin, were off on their way down to Egypt to present themselves to Joseph.	15 Ils prirent donc avec eux les présents et le double de l'argent, avec Benjamain; et étant partis, ils arrivèrent en Egypte, où ils se présentèrent devant Joseph.
16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he told his head steward, "Take these men into the house, and have an animal slaughtered and prepared, for they are to dine with me at noon."	16 Joseph les ayant vus, et Benjamin avec eux, dit à son intendant: Faites entrer ces hommes chez moi, tuez des victimes et préparez un festin, parce qu'ils mangeront à midi avec moi.
17 Doing as Joseph had ordered, the steward conducted the men to Joseph's house.	17 L'intendant exécuta ce qui lui avait été commandé, et il les fit entrer dans la maison.
18 But on being led to his house, they became apprehensive. "It must be," they thought, "on account of the money put back in our bags the first time, that we are taken inside; they want to use it as a pretext to attack us and take our donkeys and seize us as slaves."	18 Alors étant saisis de crainte, ils s'entredisaient: C'est à cause de cet argent que nous avons remporté dans nos sacs qu'il nous fait entrer ici, pour faire retomber sur nous ce reproche, et nous opprimer en nous réduisant en servitude, ainsi que nos ânes.
19 So they went up to Joseph's head steward and talked to him at the entrance of the house.	19 C'est pourquoi étant encore à la porte, ils s'approchèrent de l'intendant de Joseph.
20 "If you please, sir," they said, "we came down here once before to procure food.	20 Et ils lui dirent: Seigneur, nous vous supplions de nous écouter. Nous sommes déjà venus une fois acheter du blé,
21 But when we arrived at a night's encampment and opened our bags, there was each man's money in the mouth of his bag--our money in the full amount! We have now brought it back.	21 Et après l'avoir acheté, lorsque nous fûmes arrivés à l'hôtellerie, en ouvrant nos sacs, nous y trouvâmes notre argent que nous vous rapportons maintenant au même poids.
22 We have brought other money to procure food with. We do not know who put the first money in our bags."	22 Et nous vous en rapportons encore d'autre, pour acheter ce qui nous est nécessaire; mais nous ne savons en aucune manière qui a pu remettre cet argent dans nos sacs.
23 "Be at ease," he replied; "you have no need to fear. Your God and the God of your father must have put treasures in your bags for you. As for your money, I received it." With that, he led Simeon out to them.	23 L'intendant leur répondit: Ayez l'esprit en repos; ne craignez point. Votre Dieu et le Dieu de votre père vous a donné des trésors dans vos sacs; car pour moi j'ai reçu l'argent que vous m'avez donné, et j'en suis content. Il fit sortir aussi Siméon de la prison, et il le leur amena.
24 The steward then brought the men inside Joseph's house. He gave them water to bathe their feet, and got fodder for their donkeys.	24 Après les avoir fait entrer dans la maison, il leur apporta de l'eau; ils se lavèrent les pieds, et il donna à manger à leurs ânes.
25 Then they set out their gifts to await Joseph's arrival at noon, for they had heard that they were to dine there.	25 Cependant ils tinrent leurs présents tout prêts, attendant que Joseph entrât à midi, parce qu'on leur avait dit qu'ils devaient manger en ce lieu-là.
26 When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought inside, while they bowed down before him to the ground.	26 Joseph étant donc entré dans sa maison, ils lui offrirent leurs présents, qu'ils tenaient en leurs mains, et ils le saluèrent en se baissant jusqu'à terre.
27 After inquiring how they were, he asked them, "And how is your aged father, of whom you spoke? Is he still in good health?"	27 Il les salua aussi, en leur faisant bon visage, et il leur demanda: Votre père, ce vieillard dont vous m'aviez parlé, vit-il encore? Se porte-t-il bien?
28 "Your servant our father is thriving and still in good health," they said, as they bowed respectfully.	28 Ils lui répondirent: Notre père, votre serviteur, est encore en vie, et il se porte bien; et se baissant profondément, ils le saluèrent.
29 When Joseph's eye fell on his full brother Benjamin, he asked, "Is this your youngest brother, of whom you told me?" Then he said to him, "May God be gracious to you, my boy!"	29 Joseph, levant les yeux, vit Benjamin, son frère, fils de Rachel, sa mère, et il lui dit: Est-ce là le plus jeune de vos frères, dont vous m'aviez parlé? Mon fils, ajouta-t-il, je prie Dieu qu'Il vous soit toujours favorable.
30 With that, Joseph had to hurry out, for he was so overcome with affection for his brother that he was on the verge of tears. He went into a private room and wept there.	30 Et il se hâta de sortir, parce que ses entrailles avaient été émues en voyant son frère, et qu'il ne pouvait plus retenir ses larmes. Passant donc dans une autre chambre, il pleura.
31 After washing his face, he reappeared and, now in control of himself, gave the order, "Serve the meal."	31 Et après s'être lavé le visage, il revint, se faisant violence, et il dit: Servez à manger.
32 It was served separately to him, to the brothers, and to the Egyptians who partook of his board. (Egyptians may not eat with Hebrews; that is abhorrent to them.)	32 On servit Joseph à part, et ses frères à part, et les Egyptiens qui mangeaient avec lui furent aussi servis à part (car il n'est pas permis aux Egyptiens de manger avec les Hébreux, et ils croient qu'un festin de cette sorte serait profane).
33 When they were seated by his directions according to their age, from the oldest to the youngest, they looked at one another in amazement;	33 Ils s'assirent donc en présence de Joseph, l'aîné le premier selon son rang, et le plus jeune selon son âge. Et ils furent extrêmement surpris,
34 and as portions were brought to them from Joseph's table, Benjamin's portion was five times as large as anyone else's. So they drank freely and made merry with him.	34 En voyant les parts qu'il leur avait données; la part la plus grande vint à Benjamin, elle était cinq fois plus grande que celle des autres. Ils burent ainsi avec Joseph, et ils firent grande chère.
