Genesis 43

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Now the famine in the land grew more severe.	1 Mais la famine pesait sur le pays
2 So when they had used up all the rations they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, "Go back and procure us a little more food."	2 et lorsqu'ils eurent achevé de manger le grain qu'ils avaient apporté d'Egypte, leur père leur dit:"Retournez et achetez-nous un peu de vivres."
3 But Judah replied: "The man strictly warned us, 'You shall not appear in my presence unless your brother is with you.'	3 Juda lui répondit: "Cet homme nous a expressément avertis:Vous ne serez pas admis en maprésence à moins que votre frère ne soit avec vous.
4 If you are willing to let our brother go with us, we will go down to procure food for you.	4 Si tu es prêt à laisser notre frère avec nous, nous descendrons et t'achèterons des vivres,
5 But if you are not willing, we will not go down, because the man told us, 'You shall not appear in my presence unless your brother is with you.'"	5 mais si tu ne le laisses pas partir, nous ne descendrons pas, car cet homme nous a dit: Vous neserez pas admis en ma présence à moins que votre frère ne soit avec vous."
6 Israel demanded, "Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man that you had another brother?"
7 They answered: "The man kept asking about ourselves and our family: 'Is your father still living? Do you have another brother?' We had to answer his questions. How could we know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down here'?"	7 "C'est, répondirent-ils, que l'homme s'est enquis de nous et de notre famille en demandant: Votrepère est-il encore vivant, avez-vous un frère? Et nous l'avons informé en conséquence. Pouvions-nous savoirqu'il dirait: Amenez votre frère?"
8 Then Judah urged his father Israel: "Let the boy go with me, that we may be off and on our way if you and we and our children are to keep from starving to death.	8 Alors Juda dit à son père Israël: "Laisse aller l'enfant avec moi. Allons, mettons-nous en route pourque nous conservions la vie et ne mourions pas, nous-mêmes avec toi et les personnes à notre charge.
9 I myself will stand surety for him. You can hold me responsible for him. If I fail to bring him back, to set him in your presence, you can hold it against me forever.	9 Je me porte garant pour lui et tu m'en demanderas compte: s'il m'arrive de ne pas te le ramener etde ne pas le remettre devant tes yeux, j'en porterai la faute pendant toute ma vie.
10 Had we not dilly-dallied, we could have been there and back twice by now!"	10 Si nous n'avions pas tant tardé, nous serions déjà revenus pour la seconde fois!"
11 Their father Israel then told them: "If it must be so, then do this: Put some of the land's best products in your baggage and take them down to the man as gifts: some balm and honey, gum and resin, and pistachios and almonds.	11 Alors leur père Israël leur dit: "Puisqu'il le faut, faites donc ceci: dans vos bagages prenez desmeilleurs produits du pays pour les apporter en présent à cet homme, un peu de baume et un peu de miel, de lagomme adragante et du ladanum, des pistaches et des amandes.
12 Also take extra money along, for you must return the amount that was put back in the mouths of your bags; it may have been a mistake.	12 Prenez avec vous une seconde somme d'argent et rapportez l'argent qui a été remis à l'entrée devos sacs à blé: c'était peut-être une méprise.
13 Take your brother, too, and be off on your way back to the man.	13 Prenez votre frère et partez, retournez auprès de cet homme.
14 May God Almighty dispose the man to be merciful toward you, so that he may let your other brother go, as well as Benjamin. As for me, if I am to suffer bereavement, I shall suffer it."	14 Qu'El Shaddaï vous fasse trouver miséricorde auprès de cet homme et qu'il vous laisse ramenervotre autre frère et Benjamin. Pour moi, que je perde mes enfants si je dois les perdre!"
15 So the men got the gifts, took double the amount of money with them, and, accompanied by Benjamin, were off on their way down to Egypt to present themselves to Joseph.	15 Nos gens prirent donc ce présent, le double d'argent avec eux, et Benjamin; ils partirent etdescendirent en Egypte et ils se présentèrent devant Joseph.
16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he told his head steward, "Take these men into the house, and have an animal slaughtered and prepared, for they are to dine with me at noon."	16 Quand Joseph les vit avec Benjamin, il dit à son intendant:"Conduis ces gens à la maison, abatsune bête et apprête-là, car ces gens mangeront avec moi à midi."
17 Doing as Joseph had ordered, the steward conducted the men to Joseph's house.	17 L'homme fit comme Joseph avait commandé et conduisit nos gens à la maison de Joseph.
18 But on being led to his house, they became apprehensive. "It must be," they thought, "on account of the money put back in our bags the first time, that we are taken inside; they want to use it as a pretext to attack us and take our donkeys and seize us as slaves."	18 Nos gens eurent peur parce qu'on les conduisait à la maison de Joseph et ils dirent: "C'est à causede l'argent qui s'est retrouvé la première fois dans nos sacs à blé qu'on nous emmène: on va nous assaillir, tombersur nous et nous prendre pour esclaves, avec nos ânes."
19 So they went up to Joseph's head steward and talked to him at the entrance of the house.	19 Ils s'approchèrent de l'intendant de Joseph et lui parlèrent à l'entrée de la maison:
20 "If you please, sir," they said, "we came down here once before to procure food.	20 "Pardon, Monseigneur! dirent-ils, nous sommes descendus une première fois pour acheter desvivres
21 But when we arrived at a night's encampment and opened our bags, there was each man's money in the mouth of his bag--our money in the full amount! We have now brought it back.	21 et, lorsque nous sommes arrivés au campement pour la nuit et que nous avons ouvert nos sacs àblé, voici que l'argent de chacun se trouvait à l'entrée de son sac, notre argent bien compté, et nous le rapportonsavec nous.
22 We have brought other money to procure food with. We do not know who put the first money in our bags."	22 Nous avons apporté une autre somme pour acheter des vivres. Nous ne savons pas qui a mis notreargent dans nos sacs à blé."
23 "Be at ease," he replied; "you have no need to fear. Your God and the God of your father must have put treasures in your bags for you. As for your money, I received it." With that, he led Simeon out to them.	23 Mais il répondit: "Soyez en paix et n'ayez pas peur! C'est votre Dieu et le Dieu de votre père quivous a mis un trésor dans vos sacs à blé; votre argent m'est bien parvenu" et il leur amena Siméon.
24 The steward then brought the men inside Joseph's house. He gave them water to bathe their feet, and got fodder for their donkeys.	24 L'homme introduisit nos gens dans la maison de Joseph, il leur apporta de l'eau pour qu'ils selavent les pieds et il donna du fourrage à leurs ânes.
25 Then they set out their gifts to await Joseph's arrival at noon, for they had heard that they were to dine there.	25 Ils disposèrent le présent en attendant que Joseph vienne pour midi, car ils avaient appris qu'ilsprendraient là leur repas.
26 When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought inside, while they bowed down before him to the ground.	26 Quand Joseph rentra à la maison, ils lui offrirent le présent qu'ils avaient avec eux et seprosternèrent à terre.
27 After inquiring how they were, he asked them, "And how is your aged father, of whom you spoke? Is he still in good health?"	27 Mais il les salua amicalement et demanda: "Comment se porte votre vieux père dont vous m'avezparlé, est-il encore envie?"
28 "Your servant our father is thriving and still in good health," they said, as they bowed respectfully.	28 Ils répondirent: "Ton serviteur, notre père, se porte bien, il est encore en vie" et ilss'agenouillèrent et se prosternèrent.
29 When Joseph's eye fell on his full brother Benjamin, he asked, "Is this your youngest brother, of whom you told me?" Then he said to him, "May God be gracious to you, my boy!"	29 Levant les yeux, Joseph vit son frère Benjamin, le fils de sa mère, et demanda: "Est-ce là votreplus jeune frère, dont vous m'avez parlé?" Et s'adressant à lui: "Que Dieu te fasse grâce, mon fils."
30 With that, Joseph had to hurry out, for he was so overcome with affection for his brother that he was on the verge of tears. He went into a private room and wept there.	30 Et Joseph se hâta de sortir, car ses entrailles s'étaient émues pour son frère et les larmes luivenaient aux yeux: il entra dans sa chambre et là, il pleura.
31 After washing his face, he reappeared and, now in control of himself, gave the order, "Serve the meal."	31 S'étant lavé le visage, il revint et, se contenant, il ordonna: "Servez le repas."
32 It was served separately to him, to the brothers, and to the Egyptians who partook of his board. (Egyptians may not eat with Hebrews; that is abhorrent to them.)	32 On le servit à part, eux à part et à part aussi les Egyptiens qui mangeaient chez lui, car lesEgyptiens ne peuvent pas prendre leurs repas avec les Hébreux: ils ont cela en horreur.
33 When they were seated by his directions according to their age, from the oldest to the youngest, they looked at one another in amazement;	33 Ils étaient placés en face de lui, chacun à son rang, de l'aîné au plus jeune, et nos gens seregardaient avec étonnement.
34 and as portions were brought to them from Joseph's table, Benjamin's portion was five times as large as anyone else's. So they drank freely and made merry with him.	34 Mais lui leur fit porter, de son plat, des portions d'honneur, et la portion de Benjamin surpassaitcinq fois celle de tous les autres. Avec lui ils burent et s'enivrèrent.
