Genesis 43

1 Now the famine in the land grew more severe.	1 Or la carestia gravava sul paese.
2 So when they had used up all the rations they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, "Go back and procure us a little more food."	2 Quando ebbero finito di mangiare il grano che avevano portato dall'Egitto, il loro padre disse loro: "Ritornate a comperarci un po' di viveri".
3 But Judah replied: "The man strictly warned us, 'You shall not appear in my presence unless your brother is with you.'	3 Ma Giuda gli disse: "Quell'uomo ci ha formalmente dichiarato: "Non verrete alla mia presenza a meno che il vostro fratello non sia con voi!".
4 If you are willing to let our brother go with us, we will go down to procure food for you.	4 Se tu sei disposto a lasciar partire con noi nostro fratello, noi scenderemo laggiù per comprarti grano;
5 But if you are not willing, we will not go down, because the man told us, 'You shall not appear in my presence unless your brother is with you.'"	5 ma se tu non lo vuoi lasciar partire, noi non scenderemo, perché quell'uomo ci ha detto: "Non verrete alla mia presenza a meno che il vostro fratello non sia con voi!".
6 Israel demanded, "Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man that you had another brother?"	6 E Israele disse: "Perché mi avete dato questo dispiacere di far conoscere a quell'uomo che avevate ancora un fratello?".
7 They answered: "The man kept asking about ourselves and our family: 'Is your father still living? Do you have another brother?' We had to answer his questions. How could we know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down here'?"	7 Risposero: "Quell'uomo ci interrogò con insistenza intorno a noi e alla nostra parentela, dicendo: "E' ancora vivo vostro padre? Avete qualche fratello?", e noi rispondemmo secondo queste domande. Potevamo noi sapere che egli avrebbe detto: "Conducete qui vostro fratello"?".
8 Then Judah urged his father Israel: "Let the boy go with me, that we may be off and on our way if you and we and our children are to keep from starving to death.	8 E Giuda disse a Israele, suo padre: "Lascia venire il ragazzo con me, e poi leviamoci e andiamo, per poter vivere e non morire, sia noi che tu e i nostri bambini.
9 I myself will stand surety for him. You can hold me responsible for him. If I fail to bring him back, to set him in your presence, you can hold it against me forever.	9 Io mi rendo garante di lui: dalle mie mani lo reclamerai. Se non te lo avrò condotto, se non te lo avrò posto davanti, io sarò colpevole contro di te per tutta la vita.
10 Had we not dilly-dallied, we could have been there and back twice by now!"	10 Che se non avessimo indugiato, ora saremmo già di ritorno per la seconda volta".
11 Their father Israel then told them: "If it must be so, then do this: Put some of the land's best products in your baggage and take them down to the man as gifts: some balm and honey, gum and resin, and pistachios and almonds.	11 Allora Israele, loro padre, disse: "Se è così, fate pure: prendete nei vostri bagagli i prodotti scelti del paese e portateli in dono a quell'uomo: un po' di balsamo, un po' di miele, di gomma e resina, dei pistacchi e delle mandorle.
12 Also take extra money along, for you must return the amount that was put back in the mouths of your bags; it may have been a mistake.	12 E riporterete con voi doppio danaro, il danaro cioè che fu rimesso nella bocca dei vostri sacchi lo riporterete indietro: forse si tratta di uno sbaglio.
13 Take your brother, too, and be off on your way back to the man.	13 Prendete pure vostro fratello, e partite, ritornate da quell'uomo.
14 May God Almighty dispose the man to be merciful toward you, so that he may let your other brother go, as well as Benjamin. As for me, if I am to suffer bereavement, I shall suffer it."	14 Dio onnipotente vi faccia trovare misericordia presso quell'uomo, così che vi rilasci l'altro fratello e Beniamino. Quanto a me, una volta che dovrò esser privato dei miei figli, che ne sia privato".
15 So the men got the gifts, took double the amount of money with them, and, accompanied by Benjamin, were off on their way down to Egypt to present themselves to Joseph.	15 Gli uomini presero dunque questo dono, il doppio del denaro e anche Beniamino, e partirono, discesero in Egitto e si presentarono davanti a Giuseppe.
16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he told his head steward, "Take these men into the house, and have an animal slaughtered and prepared, for they are to dine with me at noon."	16 Quando Giuseppe ebbe visto con loro Beniamino, disse a colui ch'era a capo della sua casa: "Conduci questi uomini in casa, macella quello che c'è da macellare e prepara, perché questi uomini mangeranno con me a mezzogiorno".
17 Doing as Joseph had ordered, the steward conducted the men to Joseph's house.	17 Quel personaggio fece come Giuseppe aveva detto e introdusse gli uomini nella casa di Giuseppe.
18 But on being led to his house, they became apprehensive. "It must be," they thought, "on account of the money put back in our bags the first time, that we are taken inside; they want to use it as a pretext to attack us and take our donkeys and seize us as slaves."	18 Ma i nostri uomini si spaventarono, perché venivano condotti in casa di Giuseppe, e dissero: "E' per causa del denaro, rimesso nei nostri sacchi l'altra volta, che noi siamo condotti là: per poterci assalire, piombarci addosso e prenderci come schiavi con i nostri asini!".
19 So they went up to Joseph's head steward and talked to him at the entrance of the house.	19 Allora si avvicinarono all'uomo che era a capo della casa di Giuseppe e parlarono con lui alla porta di casa.
20 "If you please, sir," they said, "we came down here once before to procure food.	20 Gli dissero: "Scusa, mio signore, noi venimmo qui già un'altra volta per comperare dei viveri.
21 But when we arrived at a night's encampment and opened our bags, there was each man's money in the mouth of his bag--our money in the full amount! We have now brought it back.	21 Quando fummo all'albergo, aprimmo i nostri sacchi ed ecco che il denaro di ciascuno si trovava alla bocca del suo sacco: proprio il nostro denaro col suo peso esatto. E allora noi l'abbiamo portato indietro,
22 We have brought other money to procure food with. We do not know who put the first money in our bags."	22 e per comperare dei viveri abbiamo portato con noi altro denaro. Non sappiamo chi sia stato a metterci nei sacchi il nostro denaro!".
23 "Be at ease," he replied; "you have no need to fear. Your God and the God of your father must have put treasures in your bags for you. As for your money, I received it." With that, he led Simeon out to them.	23 Ma quello disse: "State in pace, non temete! E' il vostro Dio e il Dio dei padri vostri che vi ha messo un tesoro nei sacchi; il vostro denaro è già pervenuto a me". E condusse loro Simeone.
24 The steward then brought the men inside Joseph's house. He gave them water to bathe their feet, and got fodder for their donkeys.	24 Poi quell'uomo fece entrare gli uomini nella casa di Giuseppe, diede loro dell'acqua perché si lavassero i piedi, e diede del foraggio ai loro asini.
25 Then they set out their gifts to await Joseph's arrival at noon, for they had heard that they were to dine there.	25 Essi prepararono il dono nell'attesa che Giuseppe arrivasse a mezzogiorno, perché avevano sentito dire che avrebbe mangiato con loro in quel luogo.
26 When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought inside, while they bowed down before him to the ground.	26 Quando Giuseppe arrivò a casa, essi gli presentarono il dono che avevano con sé, e si prostrarono davanti a lui con la faccia a terra.
27 After inquiring how they were, he asked them, "And how is your aged father, of whom you spoke? Is he still in good health?"	27 Allora egli li salutò e disse: "Sta bene il vostro vecchio padre, di cui mi parlaste? Vive ancora?".
28 "Your servant our father is thriving and still in good health," they said, as they bowed respectfully.	28 Risposero: "Il tuo servo, nostro padre, sta bene, è ancora vivo", e s'inginocchiarono e fecero una prostrazione.
29 When Joseph's eye fell on his full brother Benjamin, he asked, "Is this your youngest brother, of whom you told me?" Then he said to him, "May God be gracious to you, my boy!"	29 Poi egli alzò gli occhi e vide Beniamino, suo fratello, il figlio di sua madre, e disse: "E' questo il vostro fratello più giovane, di cui mi parlaste?" e aggiunse: "Dio ti dia grazia, figlio mio!".
30 With that, Joseph had to hurry out, for he was so overcome with affection for his brother that he was on the verge of tears. He went into a private room and wept there.	30 E Giuseppe si affrettò ad uscire, perché si era commosso nell'intimo alla presenza di suo fratello, e sentiva il bisogno di piangere; entrò nella sua camera e lì pianse.
31 After washing his face, he reappeared and, now in control of himself, gave the order, "Serve the meal."	31 Poi si lavò la faccia, uscì e, facendosi forza, ordinò: "Servite il pasto".
32 It was served separately to him, to the brothers, and to the Egyptians who partook of his board. (Egyptians may not eat with Hebrews; that is abhorrent to them.)	32 Fu servito per lui a parte, per loro a parte e per gli Egiziani, che mangiavano con loro, a parte, perché gli Egiziani non possono prender cibo con gli Ebrei: ciò sarebbe un abominio per gli Egiziani.
33 When they were seated by his directions according to their age, from the oldest to the youngest, they looked at one another in amazement;	33 E si misero a sedere davanti a lui: il primogenito secondo la sua primogenitura e il più giovane secondo i suoi anni giovanili; e gli uomini si guardavano l'un l'altro con meraviglia.
34 and as portions were brought to them from Joseph's table, Benjamin's portion was five times as large as anyone else's. So they drank freely and made merry with him.	34 Egli fece portare loro delle porzioni prese dalla propria mensa, ma la porzione di Beniamino era cinque volte più grossa di quella di tutti gli altri. E con lui bevvero fino all'allegria.
