NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
God said to Jacob: "Go up now to Bethel. Settle there and build an altar there to the God who appeared to you while you were fleeing from your brother Esau."1 Locutus est Deus ad Iacob: “ Surge et ascende Bethel et habita ibi; facque altare Deo, qui apparuit tibi, quando fugiebas Esau fratrem tuum ”.
So Jacob told his family and all the others who were with him: "Get rid of the foreign gods that you have among you; then purify yourselves and put on fresh clothes.2 Iacob vero, convocata omni domo sua, ait: “ Abigite deos alienos, qui in medio vestri sunt, et mundamini ac mutate vestimenta vestra.
We are now to go up to Bethel, and I will build an altar there to the God who answered me in my hour of distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone."3 Surgamus et ascendamus in Bethel, ut faciamus ibi altare Deo, qui exaudivit me in die tribulationis meae et socius fuit itineris mei ”.
They therefore handed over to Jacob all the foreign gods in their possession and also the rings they had in their ears.4 Dederunt ergo ei omnes deos alienos, quos habebant, et inaures, quae erant in auribus eorum; at ille infodit ea subter Quercum, quae est prope urbem Sichem.
Then, as they set out, a terror from God fell upon the towns round about, so that no one pursued the sons of Jacob.5 Cumque profecti essent, terror Dei invasit omnes per circuitum civitates, et non sunt ausi persequi filios Iacob.
Thus Jacob and all the people who were with him arrived in Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.6 Venit igitur Iacob Luzam, quae est in terra Chanaan, id est Bethel, ipse et omnis populus cum eo.
There he built an altar and named the place Bethel, for it was there that God had revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.7 Aedificavitque ibi altare et appellavit nomen loci illius Deus Bethel; ibi enim apparuit ei Deus, cum fugeret fratrem suum.
Death came to Rebekah's nurse Deborah; she was buried under the oak below Bethel, and so it was called Allonbacuth.8 Eodem tempore mortua est Debora nutrix Rebeccae et sepulta est ad radices Bethel subter quercum; vocatumque est nomen loci illius Quercus fletus.
On Jacob's arrival from Paddan-aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him.9 Apparuit iterum Deus Iacob, postquam reversus est de Paddanaram, benedixitque ei
God said to him: "You whose name is Jacob shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name." Thus he was named Israel.10 dicens: “ Non vocaberis ultra Iacob, sed Israel erit nomen tuum ”, et appellavit eum Israel.
God also said to him: "I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations, shall stem from you, and kings shall issue from your loins.11 Dixitque ei: “ Ego Deus omnipotens. Cresce et multiplicare; gens et congregatio nationum erunt ex te, reges de lumbis tuis egredientur.
The land I once gave to Abraham and Isaac I now give to you; And to your descendants after you will I give this land."12 Terramque, quam dedi Abraham et Isaac, dabo tibi; et semini tuo post te dabo terram hanc ”.
Then God departed from him.13 Et ascendit ab eo Deus.
On the site where God had spoken with him, Jacob set up a memorial stone, and upon it he made a libation and poured out oil.14 Ille vero erexit titulum lapideum in loco, quo locutus ei fuerat Deus, libans super eum libamina et effundens oleum
Jacob named the site Bethel, because God had spoken with him there.15 vocansque nomen loci illius Bethel.
Then they departed from Bethel; but while they still had some distance to go on the way to Ephrath, Rachel began to be in labor and to suffer great distress.16 Egressi sunt de Bethel. Et adhuc spatium quoddam erat usque ad Ephratham, cum parturiret Rachel;
When her pangs were most severe, her midwife said to her, "Have no fear! This time, too, you have a son."17 ob difficultatem partus periclitari coepit, dixitque ei obstetrix: “ Noli timere, quia et hac vice habes filium ”.
With her last breath--for she was at the point of death-she called him Ben-oni; his father, however, named him Benjamin.18 Egrediente autem anima et imminente iam morte, vocavit nomen filii sui Benoni (id est Filius doloris mei); pater vero appellavit eum Beniamin (id est Filius dextrae).
Thus Rachel died; and she was buried on the road to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).19 Mortua est ergo Rachel et sepulta est in via, quae ducit Ephratham; haec est Bethlehem.
Jacob set up a memorial stone on her grave, and the same monument marks Rachel's grave to this day.20 Erexitque Iacob titulum super sepulcrum eius; hic est titulus monumenti Rachel usque in praesentem diem.
Israel moved on and pitched his tent beyond Migdal-eder.21 Egressus inde Israel, fixit tabernaculum trans Magdaleder (id est Turris gregis).
While Israel was encamped in that region, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father's concubine. When Israel heard of it, he was greatly offended. The sons of Jacob were now twelve.22 Cumque habitaret in illa regione, abiit Ruben et dormivit cum Bilha concubina patris sui; quod illum minime latuit.
Erant autem filii Iacob duodecim.
The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob's first-born, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;23 Filii Liae: primogenitus Ruben et Simeon et Levi et Iudas et Issachar et Zabulon.
the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin;24 Filii Rachel: Ioseph et Beniamin.
the sons of Rachel's maid Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali;25 Filii Bilhae ancillae Rachelis: Dan et Nephthali.
the sons of Leah's maid Zilpah: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.26 Filii Zelphae ancillae Liae: Gad et Aser. Hi sunt filii Iacob, qui nati sunt ei in Paddanaram.
Jacob went home to his father Isaac at Mamre, in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.27 Venit Iacob ad Isaac patrem suum in Mambre Cariatharbe, id est Hebron, ubi peregrinatus est Abraham et Isaac.
The lifetime of Isaac was one hundred and eighty years;28 Et completi sunt dies Isaac centum octoginta annorum;
then he breathed his last. After a full life, he died as an old man and was taken to his kinsmen. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.29 consumptusque aetate mortuus est et appositus est populo suo senex et plenus dierum. Et sepelierunt eum Esau et Iacob filii sui.
