NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said: "I am God the Almighty. Walk in my presence and be blameless.1 And after he began to be ninety and nine years old, the Lord appeared to him: and said unto him: I am the Almighty God: walk before me, and be perfect.
Between you and me I will establish my covenant, and I will multiply you exceedingly."2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee: and I will multiply thee exceedingly.
When Abram prostrated himself, God continued to speak to him:3 Abram tell flat on his face.
"My covenant with you is this: you are to become the father of a host of nations.4 And God said to him: I AM, and my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father. of many nations.
No longer shall you be called Abram; your name shall be Abraham, for I am making you the father of a host of nations.5 Neither shall thy name be called any more Abram: but thou shalt be called Abraham: because I have made thee a father of many nations.
I will render you exceedingly fertile; I will make nations of you; kings shall stem from you.6 And I will make thee increase, exceedingly, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
I will maintain my covenant with you and your descendants after you throughout the ages as an everlasting pact, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and between thy sad after thee in their generations, by a perpetual covenant: to be a God to thee, and to thy seed after thee.
I will give to you and to your descendants after you the land in which you are now staying, the whole land of Canaan, as a permanent possession; and I will be their God."8 And I will give to thee, and to thy seed, the land of thy sojournment, all the land of Chanaan for a perpetual possession, and I will be their God.
God also said to Abraham: "On your part, you and your descendants after you must keep my covenant throughout the ages.9 Again God said to Abraham: And thou therefore shalt keep my covenant, and thy seed after thee in their generations.
This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you that you must keep: every male among you shall be circumcised.10 This is my covenant which you shall observe, between me and you, and thy seed after thee: All the male kind of you shall be circumcised:
Circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and that shall be the mark of the covenant between you and me.11 And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, that it may be for a h sign of the covenant between me and you.
Throughout the ages, every male among you, when he is eight days old, shall be circumcised, including houseborn slaves and those acquired with money from any foreigner who is not of your blood.12 An infant of eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations: he that is born in the house, as well as the bought servant shall be circumcised, and whosoever is not of your stock:
Yes, both the houseborn slaves and those acquired with money must be circumcised. Thus my covenant shall be in your flesh as an everlasting pact.13 And my covenant shall be in your flesh for a perpetual covenant.
If a male is uncircumcised, that is, if the flesh of his foreskin has not been cut away, such a one shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant."14 The male, whose dash of his foreskin shall not be circumcised, that soul shall be destroyed out of his people: because he hath broken my covenant.
God further said to Abraham: "As for your wife Sarai, do not call her Sarai; her name shall be Sarah.15 God said also to Abraham: Sarai thy wife thou shalt not call Sarai, but Sara.
I will bless her, and I will give you a son by her. Him also will I bless; he shall give rise to nations, and rulers of peoples shall issue from him."16 And I will bless her, and of her I will give thee a son, whom I will bless, and he shell become nations, and kings of people shall spring from him.
Abraham prostrated himself and laughed as he said to himself, "Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Or can Sarah give birth at ninety?"17 Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, saying in his heart: Shall a son, thinkest thou, be born to him that is a hundred years old? and shall Sara that is ninety years old bring forth?
Then Abraham said to God, "Let but Ishmael live on by your favor!"18 And he said to God: O that Ismael may live before thee.
God replied: "Nevertheless, your wife Sarah is to bear you a son, and you shall call him Isaac. I will maintain my covenant with him as an everlasting pact, to be his God and the God of his descendants after him.19 And God said to Abraham: Sara thy wife shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name Isaac, and I will establish my covenant with him for a perpetual covenant, and with his seed after him.
As for Ishmael, I am heeding you: I hereby bless him. I will make him fertile and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall become the father of twelve chieftains, and I will make of him a great nation.20 And as for Ismael I have also heard thee. Behold, I will bless him, and increase, and multiply him exceedingly: he shall beget twelve chiefs, and I will make him a great nation.
But my covenant I will maintain with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you by this time next year."21 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sara shall bring forth to thee at this time in the next year.
When he had finished speaking with him, God departed from Abraham.22 And when he had left oil speaking with him, God went up from Abraham.
Then Abraham took his son Ishmael and all his slaves, whether born in his house or acquired with his money--every male among the members of Abraham's household--and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins on that same day, as God had told him to do.23 And Abraham took Ismael his son, and all that were born in his house: and all whom he had bought, every male among the men of his house: and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskin forthwith the very same day, as God had commanded him.
Abraham was ninety-nine years old when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised,24 Abraham was ninety and nine years old, when he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin.
and his son Ishmael was thirteen years old when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised.25 And Ismael his son was full thirteen years old at the time of his circumcision.
Thus, on that same day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised;26 dummy verses inserted by amos
and all the male members of his household, including the slaves born in his house or acquired with his money from foreigners, were circumcised with him.27 And all the men of his house, as well they that were born in his house, as the bought servants and strangers were circumcised with him.
The selfsame day was Abraham circumcised and Ismael his son.
