1 Ma un cert'uomo detto Anania con Saffira, sua moglie vendè un podere,	1 There was also a man cal ed Ananias. He and his wife, Sapphira, agreed to sel a property;
2 E d'accordo con sua moglie ritenne del prezzo: e portandone una tal qual porzione, la pose a' piedi degli Apostoli.	2 but with his wife's connivance he kept back part of the price and brought the rest and presented it to theapostles.
3 E Pietro disse: Anania, come mai satana tentò il cuor tuo a mentire allo Spirito santo, e ritenere del prezzo del podere?	3 Peter said, 'Ananias, how can Satan have so possessed you that you should lie to the Holy Spirit andkeep back part of the price of the land?
4 Non è egli vero, che conservandolo stava per te, e venduto era in tuo potere? Per qual motivo ti sei messa in cuore tal cosa? Non hai mentito agli uomini, ma a Dio.	4 While you stil owned the land, wasn't it yours to keep, and after you had sold it wasn't the money yoursto do with as you liked? What put this scheme into your mind? You have been lying not to men, but to God.'
5 Udite, che ebbe Anania queste parole, cadde, e spirò. E gran timore entrò in tutti quei, che udirono.	5 When he heard this Ananias fel down dead. And a great fear came upon everyone present.
6 E si mosser de' giovani, e quindi lo tolsero, e portaronlo a seppellire.	6 The younger men got up, wrapped up the body, carried it out and buried it.
7 Era trascorso lo spazio di circa tre ore, quando la di lui moglie non informata del successo arrivò.	7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had taken place.
8 E Pietro le disse: Dimmi o Donna, avete voi venduto il podere per il tal prezzo? Ed ella disse: cosi appunto.	8 Peter chal enged her, 'Tel me, was this the price you sold the land for?' 'Yes,' she said, 'that was theprice.'
9 E Pietro a lei: per qual motivo vi siete accordati a tentare lo spirito del Signore? Ecco, sono alla soglia i piedi di coloro, che hanno data sepoltura a tuo marito, e ti porteranno fuori.	9 Peter then said, 'Why did you and your husband agree to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Listen! Atthe door are the footsteps of those who have buried your husband; they wil carry you out, too.'
10 E immantinenti ella cadde a' suoi piedi, e spirò. Ed entrati que' giovani trovaron la morta, e la portarono a seppellire accanto a suo marito.	10 Instantly she dropped dead at his feet. When the young men came in they found she was dead, andthey carried her out and buried her by the side of her husband.
11 E gran timore ne nacque in tutta la chiesa, e in tutti coloro, che udirono tali cose.	11 And a great fear came upon the whole church and on al who heard it.
12 E molti segni, e prodigj faceansi nel populo per le mani degli Apostoli. E se ne stavano tutti d'accordo nel portico di Salomone.	12 The apostles worked many signs and miracles among the people. One in heart, they al used to meetin the Portico of Solomon.
13 Degli altri poi nissuno ardiva di affratellarsi con essi: ma il popolo li celebrava.	13 No one else dared to join them, but the people were loud in their praise
14 E più e più cresceva la moltitudine di que', che credevano nel Signore, uomini, e donne.	14 and the numbers of men and women who came to believe in the Lord increased steadily. Many signsand wonders were worked among the people at the hands of the apostles
15 Talmente che portavano fuori nelle piazze i malati, e li mettevano sopra letti, e strapunti, affinchè, passando Pietro, l'ombra almeno di lui adombrasse alcuno di essi, e fosser liberati dalle loro infermità.	15 so that the sick were even taken out into the streets and laid on beds and sleeping-mats in the hopethat at least the shadow of Peter might fal across some of them as he went past.
16 Concorreva eziandio a Gerusalemme molta gente dalle vicine città, portando de' malati, e vessati dagli spiriti immondi: i quali erano tutti quanti risanati.	16 People even came crowding in from the towns round about Jerusalem, bringing with them their sickand those tormented by unclean spirits, and al of them were cured.
17 Ma esacerbato il principe de' sacerdoti, e tutti quelli del suo partito (che è la setta de' Sadducei) si riempiron di zelo.	17 Then the high priest intervened with all his supporters from the party of the Sadducees. Fil ed withjealousy,
18 E messer le mani addosso agli Apostoli, e li poser nella pubblica prigione.	18 they arrested the apostles and had them put in the public gaol.
19 Ma l'Angelo del Signore di notte tempo aprì le porte della prigione, e condottili fuora, disse:	19 But at night the angel of the Lord opened the prison gates and said as he led them out,
20 Andate, e statevi nel tempio a predicare al popolo tutte le parole di questa scienza di vita.	20 'Go and take up position in the Temple, and tel the people all about this new Life.'
21 Ed essi udito questo entrarono sul far dell'alba nel tempio, ed insegnavano. Ma venuto il principe de' sacerdoti, e quelli del suo partito, convocarono il sinedrio, e tutti i seniori de' figliuoli d'Israele: e mandarono alla prigione, perché gli fosser condotti davanti.	21 They did as they were told; they went into the Temple at dawn and began to preach. When the highpriest arrived, he and his supporters convened the Sanhedrin -- this was the ful Senate of Israel -- and sent tothe gaol for them to be brought.
22 E andati i ministri, e aperta la prigione non li trovando, tornarono in dietro a recar questa nuova,	22 But when the officials arrived at the prison they found they were not inside, so they went back and reported,
23 Dicendo: quanto alla prigione l'abbiamo trovata chiusa con tutta puntualità, e le guardie fuori in piedi alle porte: ma apertala niuno vi abbiamo trovato dentro.	23 'We found the gaol securely locked and the warders on duty at the gates, but when we unlocked thedoor we found no one inside.'
24 Udite tali parole, il prefetto del tempio, e i principi de' sacerdoti stavan, perplessi, dove queste cose andassero a finire.	24 When the captain of the Temple and the chief priests heard this news they wondered what could behappening.
25 Ma sopraggiunse chi diede lor questo avviso: ecco che quegli uomini, che furon messi da voi in prigione, stanno arditamente nel tempio, e insegnano al popolo.	25 Then a man arrived with fresh news. 'Look!' he said, 'the men you imprisoned are in the Temple. Theyare standing there preaching to the people.'
26 Allora andò il magistrato con i ministri, e li menò via, non con violenza: imperocché temevan di non esser lapidati dal popolo.	26 The captain went with his men and fetched them -- though not by force, for they were afraid that thepeople might stone them.
27 E li condussero, e presentarono al consiglio: e il sommo sacerdote gl'interrogò,	27 When they had brought them in to face the Sanhedrin, the high priest demanded an explanation.
28 Dicendo: noi vi abbiamo strettamente ordinato di non insegnare in quel nome: ed ecco, che avete riempito Gerusalemme della vostra dottrina: e volete renderci responsali del sangue di quell'uomo.	28 'We gave you a strong warning', he said, 'not to preach in this name, and what have you done? Youhave fil ed Jerusalem with your teaching, and seem determined to fix the guilt for this man's death on us.'
29 Rispose Pietro, e gli Apostoli, e dissero: bisogna ubbidire a Dio piuttosto, che agli uomini.	29 In reply Peter and the apostles said, 'Obedience to God comes before obedience to men;
30 Il Dio de' padri nostri ha risuscitato Gesù, cui voi uccideste, appesolo ad un legno.	30 it was the God of our ancestors who raised up Jesus, whom you executed by hanging on a tree.
31 Questo principe, e salvatore lo esaltò Iddio colla sua destra per dare ad Israele la penitenza, e la remissione de' peccati.	31 By his own right hand God has now raised him up to be leader and Saviour, to give repentance andforgiveness of sins through him to Israel.
32 E noi siamo testimoni di queste cose, ed anche lo spirito santo dato da Dio a tutti quelli che a lui ubbidiscono.	32 We are witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.'
33 Quelli, udite tali cose, smaniavano, e trattavan di mettergli a morte.	33 This so infuriated them that they wanted to put them to death.
34 Ma levatosi su uno del consiglio chiamato Gamaliele, Fariseo, dottor della legge, rispettato da tutto il popolo, ordinò di metter fuora per un po' di tempo quegli uomini,	34 One member of the Sanhedrin, however, a Pharisee called Gamaliel, who was a teacher of the Lawrespected by the whole people, stood up and asked to have the men taken outside for a time.
35 E disse loro: uomini Israeliti, badate bene a quel, che siete per fare riguardo a questi uomini.	35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin, 'Men of Israel, be careful how you deal with these people.
36 Imperocché prima di questi giorni scappò fuori Teoda, dicente, se essere qualche cosa, col quale si associò un numero di circa quattrocento uomini, il quale fu ucciso: e tutti quelli, che gli credevano, furon dispersi e ridotti a niente.	36 Some time ago there arose Theudas. He claimed to be someone important, and col ected about fourhundred fol owers; but when he was kil ed, al his fol owers scattered and that was the end of them.
37 Dopo questo scappò fuori Giuda il Galileo nel tempo della descrizione, e si tirò dietro il popolo, ed egli ancora perì: e furono dissipati tutti quanti i suoi seguaci.	37 And then there was Judas the Galilean, at the time of the census, who attracted crowds of supporters;but he was kil ed too, and al his fol owers dispersed.
38 E adesso io dico a voi, non toccate questi uomini, e lasciateli fare: conciossiachè se questo pensiero, o questa opera viene dagli uomini, sarà disfatta.	38 What I suggest, therefore, is that you leave these men alone and let them go. If this enterprise, thismovement of theirs, is of human origin it wil break up of its own accord;
39 Se poi ell'è da Dio, non potrete disfarla: che non sembri che fate guerra anche a Dio. E approvarono il suo parere.	39 but if it does in fact come from God you wil be unable to destroy them. Take care not to find yourselvesfighting against God.' His advice was accepted;
40 E chiamati gli Apostoli, battuti che gli ebbero, intimaron loro di non parlare né punto né poco nel nome di Gesù, e li rilasciarono.	40 and they had the apostles called in, gave orders for them to be flogged, warned them not to speak inthe name of Jesus and released them.
41 Ed essi se ne andnvan contenti dal cospetto del consiglio, per essere stati fatti degni di patir contumelia pel nome di Gesù.	41 And so they left the presence of the Sanhedrin, glad to have had the honour of suffering humiliation forthe sake of the name.
42 E ogni di non cessavano e nel tempio, e per le case d'insegnare, e di evangelizzare Gesù Cristo.	42 Every day they went on ceaselessly teaching and proclaiming the good news of Christ Jesus, both inthe temple and in private houses.
