1 Ma tu Dio nostro, tu se' benigno, e verace, e paziente, e tutto governi con misericordia:	1 But you, our God, are good and true, slow to anger, and governing all with mercy.
2 Imperocché se noi peccheremo, siamo tuoi, noi che conosciamo la tua grandezza, e se non peccheremo, sappiamo che tu tieni conto di noi:	2 For even if we sin, we are yours, and know your might; but we will not sin, knowing that we belong to you.
3 Perocché il conoscer te è la perfezione della giustizia, e il conoscere la giustizia, e potenza tua, è radice di immortalità.	3 For to know you well is complete justice, and to know your might is the root of immortality.
4 Conciossiachè non ha indotti noi in errore la invenzione maligna degli uomini, né il vano artifizio di un'ombreggiata pittura, od una immagine co' vari colori rappresentata,	4 For neither did the evil creation of men's fancy deceive us, nor the fruitless labor of painters, A form smeared with varied colors,
5 Di cui la vista sveglia la cupidità dello stolto, che ama la avvenenza di un morto ritratto senz'anima.	5 the sight of which arouses yearning in the senseless man, till he longs for the inanimate form of a dead image.
6 Quelli, che amano il male, sono degni di avere speranza in cose tali, e quelli pur, che lo fanno, e que', che le amano, e quelli, che le onorano.	6 Lovers of evil things, and worthy of such hopes are they who make them and long for them and worship them.
7 Similmente un vasaio maneggiando la molle creta con molta fatica ne forma per nostro uso de' vasi di ogni sorte, e' della medesima pasta ne fa de' vasi per usi onesti, e similmente de' vasi per usi contrari: e dell'uso, a cui debban servire que' vasi ne è arbitro il vasaio;	7 For truly the potter, laboriously working the soft earth, molds for our service each several article: Both the vessels that serve for clean purposes and their opposites, all alike; As to what shall be the use of each vessel of either class the worker in clay is the judge.
8 E con vana fatica della stessa pasta né forma un Dio, egli, che poco prima fu di terra creato, e di qui a poco ritorna donde fu tratto, allorché gli sarà ridomandata quell'anima, di cui è debitore.	8 And with misspent toil he molds a meaningless god from the selfsame clay; though he himself shortly before was made from the earth And after a little, is to go whence he was taken, when the life that was lent him is demanded back.
9 Ma egli non pensa alla fatica, che soffre, né alla brevità di sua vita, ma fa a picca cogli orefici, e argentieri, ed imita anche i bronzisti, e pone la sua gloria nel formare cose inutili,	9 But his concern is not that he is to die nor that his span of life is brief; Rather, he vies with goldsmiths and silversmiths and emulates molders of bronze, and takes pride in modeling counterfeits.
10 Perché il suo cuore è cenere, e la speranza di lui è men pregevole della terra, e la vita di lui è più vile del fango:	10 Ashes his heart is! more worthless than earth is his hope, and more ignoble than clay his life;
11 Mentre egli non conosce colui, che lo ha formato, e gli ispirò quell'anima, mediante la quale egli opera, e soffo in lui lo spirito di vita.	11 Because he knew not the one who fashioned him, and breathed into him a quickening soul, and infused a vital spirit.
12 Costoro anzi han creduto, che sia un giucco la nostra vita, e che tutta la nostra occupazione abbia da essere pel guadagno, e che convenga cercar di far roba anche col malfare:	12 Instead, he esteemed our life a plaything, and our span of life a holiday for gain; "For one must," says he, "make profit every way, be it even out of evil."
13 Perocché ben sa, che più di tutti egli pecca colui, che di fragil materia forma de' vasi, e de' simolacri.	13 For this man more than any knows that he is sinning, when out of earthen stuff he creates fragile vessels and idols alike.
14 Ma son tutti stolti, e sgraziati, e superbi più che anima nata i nemici del popol tuo, i quali lo dominano,	14 But all quite senseless, and worse than childish in mind, are the enemies of your people who enslaved them.
15 Perché eglino credono dei tutti gli idoli delle genti, i quali non hanno l'uso degli occhi per vedere, né delle narici per respirare, né degli orecchi per udire, né delle dita delle mani per toccare, e i piedi stessi hanno incapaci di muoversi:	15 For they esteemed all the idols of the nations gods, which have no use of the eyes for vision, nor nostrils to snuff the air, Nor ears to hear, nor fingers on their hands for feeling; even their feet are useless to walk with.
16 Perocché un uomo li fece, e formolli uno, a cui fu dato in prestito lo spirito: e nissun uomo potrà mai fare un Dio simile a se;	16 For a man made them; one whose spirit has been lent him fashioned them. For no man succeeds in fashioning a god like himself;
17 Ed essendo egli mortale colle inique sue mani forma un morto; onde egli è da più di quelli, che adora, perchè egli benché mortale ha ottenuto la vita, ma quelli non mai.	17 being mortal, he makes a dead thing with his lawless hands. For he is better than the things he worships; he at least lives, but never they.
18 Ma essi rendono culto ai più odiosi i animali, i quali paragonati coll'altre bestie prive di sentimento son di queste peggiori.	18 And besides, they worship the most loathsome beasts-- for compared as to folly, these are worse than the rest,
19 Né alcuno può nell'aspetto istesso di quegli animali osservare alcun bene, come quelli, che han perduta l'approvazione, e la benedizione di Dio.	19 Nor for their looks are they good or desirable beasts, but they have escaped both the approval of God and his blessing.
