υπολαβων δε ιωβ λεγει | 1 Job spoke next. He said: |
ει γαρ τις ιστων στησαι μου την οργην τας δε οδυνας μου αραι εν ζυγω ομοθυμαδον | 2 If only my misery could be weighed, and al my il s be put together on the scales! |
και δη αμμου παραλιας βαρυτερα εσται αλλ' ως εοικεν τα ρηματα μου εστιν φαυλα | 3 But they outweigh the sands of the seas: what wonder then if my words are wild? |
βελη γαρ κυριου εν τω σωματι μου εστιν ων ο θυμος αυτων εκπινει μου το αιμα οταν αρξωμαι λαλειν κεντουσι με | 4 The arrows of Shaddai stick fast in me, my spirit absorbs their poison, God's terrors stand paradedagainst me. |
τι γαρ μη δια κενης κεκραξεται ονος αγριος αλλ' η τα σιτα ζητων ει δε και ρηξει φωνην βους επι φατνης εχων τα βρωματα | 5 Does a wild donkey bray when it has grass, or an ox low when its fodder is within reach? |
ει βρωθησεται αρτος ανευ αλος ει δε και εστιν γευμα εν ρημασιν κενοις | 6 Is not food insipid, eaten without salt, is there any taste in egg-white? |
ου δυναται γαρ παυσασθαι μου η ψυχη βρομον γαρ ορω τα σιτα μου ωσπερ οσμην λεοντος | 7 But the very things my appetite revolts at are now my diet in sickness. |
ει γαρ δωη και ελθοι μου η αιτησις και την ελπιδα μου δωη ο κυριος | 8 Will no one hear my prayer, will not God himself grant my hope? |
αρξαμενος ο κυριος τρωσατω με εις τελος δε μη με ανελετω | 9 May it please God to crush me, to give his hand free play and do away with me! |
ειη δε μου πολις ταφος εφ' ης επι τειχεων ηλλομην επ' αυτης ου μη φεισωμαι ου γαρ εψευσαμην ρηματα αγια θεου μου | 10 This thought, at least, would give me comfort (a thril of joy in unrelenting pain), that I never rebel edagainst the Holy One's decrees. |
τις γαρ μου η ισχυς οτι υπομενω η τις μου ο χρονος οτι ανεχεται μου η ψυχη | 11 But have I the strength to go on waiting? And why be patient, when doomed to such an end? |
μη ισχυς λιθων η ισχυς μου η αι σαρκες μου εισιν χαλκειαι | 12 Is mine the strength of stone, is my flesh made of bronze? |
η ουκ επ' αυτω επεποιθειν βοηθεια δε απ' εμου απεστιν | 13 Can I support myself on nothing? Has not al help deserted me? |
απειπατο με ελεος επισκοπη δε κυριου υπερειδεν με | 14 Refuse faithful love to your neighbour and you forsake the fear of Shaddai. |
ου προσειδον με οι εγγυτατοι μου ωσπερ χειμαρρους εκλειπων η ωσπερ κυμα παρηλθον με | 15 Like the torrent, my brothers have proved deceptive, as fleeting torrents they flow: |
οιτινες με διευλαβουντο νυν επιπεπτωκασιν μοι ωσπερ χιων η κρυσταλλος πεπηγως | 16 the ice makes their waters turgid when, above them, the snow melts, |
καθως τακεισα θερμης γενομενης ουκ επεγνωσθη οπερ ην | 17 but, come the burning summer, they run dry, they vanish in the heat of the sun. |
ουτως καγω κατελειφθην υπο παντων απωλομην δε και εξοικος εγενομην | 18 Caravans leave the trail to find them, go deep into wastelands, and are lost. |
ιδετε οδους θαιμανων ατραπους σαβων οι διορωντες | 19 The caravans of Tema look to them, and on them Sheba's convoys build their hopes. |
και αισχυνην οφειλησουσιν οι επι πολεσιν και χρημασιν πεποιθοτες | 20 Their trust brings only embarrassment, they reach them only to be thwarted. |
αταρ δε και υμεις επεβητε μοι ανελεημονως ωστε ιδοντες το εμον τραυμα φοβηθητε | 21 And this is how you now treat me, terrified at the sight of me, you take fright. |
τι γαρ μη τι υμας ητησα η της παρ' υμων ισχυος επιδεομαι | 22 Have I said to you, 'Give me something, make some present for me at your own cost, |
ωστε σωσαι με εξ εχθρων η εκ χειρος δυναστων ρυσασθαι με | 23 snatch me from the grasp of an oppressor, ransom me from the grip of a violent man'? |
διδαξατε με εγω δε κωφευσω ει τι πεπλανημαι φρασατε μοι | 24 Put me right, and I shal say no more; show me where I have been at fault. |
αλλ' ως εοικεν φαυλα αληθινου ρηματα ου γαρ παρ' υμων ισχυν αιτουμαι | 25 Fair comment can be borne without resentment, but what are your strictures aimed at? |
ουδε ο ελεγχος υμων ρημασιν με παυσει ουδε γαρ υμων φθεγμα ρηματος ανεξομαι | 26 Do you think mere words deserve censure, desperate speech that the wind blows away? |
πλην οτι επ' ορφανω επιπιπτετε εναλλεσθε δε επι φιλω υμων | 27 Soon you wil be haggling over the price of an orphan, and sel ing your friend at bargain price! |
νυνι δε εισβλεψας εις προσωπα υμων ου ψευσομαι | 28 Come, I beg you, look at me: man to man, I shal not lie. |
καθισατε δη και μη ειη αδικον και παλιν τω δικαιω συνερχεσθε | 29 Relent then, no harm is done; relent then, since I am upright. |
ου γαρ εστιν εν γλωσση μου αδικον η ο λαρυγξ μου ουχι συνεσιν μελετα | 30 Is evil to be found on my lips? Can I not recognise misfortune when I taste it? |
