1 Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh,	1 Allora Giosuè convocò i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse
2 And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:	2 e disse loro: «Voi avete osservato quanto vi ha comandato Mosè, servitore di Jahvè, e avete ascoltato la mia voce in tutti gli ordini che vi ho dato.
3 Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.	3 Voi non avete abbandonato i vostri fratelli, nonostante la lunga campagna durata fino a oggi, e avete eseguito alla lettera il comando di Jahvè vostro Dio.
4 And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan.	4 Ora poiché Jahvè vostro Dio ha procurato il riposo ai vostri fratelli, come aveva promesso, ritornate pure alle vostre tende, nel paese che vi appartiene e che Mosè, servitore di Jahvè, vi ha assegnato al di là del Giordano.
5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.	5 Soltanto badate bene di mettere in pratica i precetti e la legge che Mosè, servitore di Jahvè, vi ha imposto: di amare Jahvè vostro Dio, di camminare in tutte le sue vie, di osservare i suoi comandamenti, restando uniti a lui e servendolo con tutto il cuore e con tutta l’anima»
6 So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their tents.	6 Giosuè li benedisse e li congedò; essi ritornarono agli accampamenti,
7 Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,	7 A metà della tribù di Manasse Mosè aveva assegnato un territorio in Bashan, mentre all’altra metà Giosuè lo aveva assegnato accanto ai loro fratelli sulla riva occidentale del Giordano. Inoltre, quando Giosuè li rimandò alle loro tende e li benedisse,
8 And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.	8 aggiunse loro: «Tornate pure alle vostre tende con grandi ricchezze, con moltissimo bestiame, con argento, oro, bronzo, ferro e vesti in grande quantità; però dividete con i vostri fratelli il bottino tolto ai vostri nemici».
9 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.	9 I figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad partirono con metà della tribù di Manasse e lasciarono i figli di Israele a Silo nel paese di Canaan, per rientrare nel paese di Galaad, territorio che apparteneva loro e dove si erano fissati, secondo l’ordine che Jahvè aveva trasmesso per mezzo di Mosè.
10 And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.	10 Quando furono arrivati ai Ghelilot del Giordano, che sono ancora nella terra di Canaan, i figli di Ruben, di Gad e di metà della tribù di Manasse eressero là un altare al disopra del Giordano, un altare di proporzioni grandiose.
11 And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the chidren of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.	11 Il fatto fu risaputo dai figli di Israele. «Ecco» si diceva «i figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse hanno eretto un altare di fronte al paese di Canaan, verso i Ghelilot del Giordano, al di là del territorio dei figli di Israele».
12 And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to war against them.	12 A questa notizia tutta la comunità dei figli di Israele si riunì a Silo per marciare contro di loro e muovere loro guerra.
13 And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,	13 Ma i figli di Israele mandarono presso i figli di Ruben e presso i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse, al paese di Galaad, il sacerdote Pinkhas, figlio di Eleazaro,
14 And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.	14 e con lui dieci principi, uno per ciascuna tribù di Israele e ciascuno dei quali era capo della sua casata nelle migliaia di Israele.
15 And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying,	15 Quando essi furono arrivati presso i figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse nel paese di Galaad, dissero loro:
16 Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the LORD, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might rebel this day against the LORD?	16 «Così dice tutta la comunità di Jahvè: “Che significa questa infedeltà che avete commesso contro il Dio di Israele? Perché vi staccate oggi da Jahvè costruendovi un altare che è un’aperta ribellione contro di lui?
17 Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we are not cleansed until this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the LORD,	17 Non ci basta l’iniquità di Peor della quale non siamo riusciti a purificarci fino a oggi, nonostante il flagello che colpì il popolo di Jahvè?
18 But that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to day against the LORD, that to morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.	18 Dunque, poiché voi oggi rinunciate a seguire Jahvè, ne viene che oggi vi ribellate contro di lui e domani la sua collera si infiammerà contro tutta la comunità di Israele.
19 Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD's tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against the LORD, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the LORD our God.	19 Se la terra di vostra proprietà vi sembra impura, trasferitevi nella terra di proprietà di Jahvè, là dove si trova la Dimora di Jahvè e prendete un possesso fra di noi. Ma non ribellatevi a Jahvè e non trascinateci nella vostra rivolta, erigendo un altare rivale dell’altare di Jahvè nostro Dio.
20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.	20 Quando Achan, figlio di Zerakh, commise una infedeltà contro l’anatema non ricadde forse l’ira di Jahvè sopra tutta la comunità di Israele, sebbene fosse un solo uomo? Non dovette egli morire per sua colpa?”».
21 Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,	21 I figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse risposero ai capi di mille di Israele:
22 The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,)	22 «Dio, Dio, Jahvè; Dio, Dio, Jahvè! Lui lo sa e Israele lo apprenda. Se fu per spirito di ribellione e infedeltà verso Jahvè, egli non ci scampi in questo giorno!
23 That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it;	23 Se ci siamo costruiti un altare per abbandonare Jahvè e per offrirvi olocausti e oblazioni e per compiervi sacrifici pacifici, Jahvè stesso ce ne chieda conto!
24 And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel?	24 Ma, in verità, noi abbiamo fatto ciò per una certa inquietudine pensando: un giorno i vostri figli potrebbero dire ai nostri: “Che cosa c’è tra voi e Jahvè Dio di Israele?
25 For the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the LORD.	25 Jahvè ha posto un limite tra noi e voi, figli di Ruben e figli di Gad, ed è il Giordano. Voi non avete alcuna parte con Jahvè!”. Così i vostri figli potrebbero distogliere i nostri dal culto di Jahvè.
26 Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:	26 Perciò abbiamo detto: “Costruiamoci un altare non per offrirvi olocausti e sacrifici,
27 But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.	27 ma perché sia testimonio fra noi e fra i nostri discendenti dopo di noi, che intendiamo rendere un culto a Jahvè con i nostri olocausti e con i nostri sacrifici pacifici e perché un giorno i vostri figli non dicano ai nostri: Voi non avete nessun diritto verso Jahvè!”.
28 Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.	28 Abbiamo dunque pensato: se un giorno così parleranno a noi e alla nostra discendenza, noi risponderemo: “Guardate la forma dell’altare di Jahvè che hanno fatto i nostri padri; non è per olocausto né per sacrifici, ma solo perché sia un testimonio fra noi e voi”.
29 God forbid that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.	29 Lungi da noi il pensiero di volerci ribellare a Jahvè e di volerlo oggi abbandonare erigendo un altare per olocausti, sacrifici e oblazioni, rivale dell’altare di Jahvè nostro Dio, che sta innanzi alla Tenda».
30 And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them.	30 Quando il sacerdote Pinkhas e i principi della comunità e i capi di mille di Israele, che erano con lui, udirono queste parole pronunciate dai figli di Ruben e dai figli di Gad e da metà della tribù di Manasse, ne rimasero soddisfatti.
31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD.	31 Il sacerdote Pinkhas, figlio di Eleazaro, disse ai figli di Ruben, di Gad e di metà della tribù di Manasse: «Oggi riconosciamo che Jahvè è in mezzo a voi, perché non avete commesso questa infedeltà contro Jahvè; così avete salvato i figli di Israele dalle mani di Jahvè».
32 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.	32 Quindi il sacerdote Pinkhas, figlio di Eleazaro, e i principi lasciarono i figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse dal paese di Galaad per ritornare alla terra di Canaan dai figli di Israele. Esposta a questi la cosa,
33 And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.	33 i figli di Israele ne rimasero soddisfatti, benedissero Jahvè e non parlarono più di muovere guerra contro di loro e di devastare il paese abitato dai figli di Ruben e dai figli di Gad.
34 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God.	34 I figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad chiamarono Ed l’altare perché dissero: «Esso è testimonio fra di noi che Jahvè è il vero Dio».
