KING JAMES BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.1 As he went along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.
And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?2 His disciples asked him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should have been bornblind?'
Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.3 'Neither he nor his parents sinned,' Jesus answered, 'he was born blind so that the works of God mightbe revealed in him.
I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.4 'As long as day lasts we must carry out the work of the one who sent me; the night wil soon be herewhen no one can work.
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.5 As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world.'
When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,6 Having said this, he spat on the ground, made a paste with the spittle, put this over the eyes of the blindman,
And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.7 and said to him, 'Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam' (the name means 'one who has been sent'). So hewent off and washed and came back able to see.
The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?8 His neighbours and the people who used to see him before (for he was a beggar) said, 'Isn't this theman who used to sit and beg?'
Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.9 Some said, 'Yes, it is the same one.' Others said, 'No, but he looks just like him.' The man himself said,'Yes, I am the one.'
Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?10 So they said to him, 'Then how is it that your eyes were opened?'
He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.11 He answered, 'The man cal ed Jesus made a paste, daubed my eyes with it and said to me, "Go offand wash at Siloam"; so I went, and when I washed I gained my sight.'
Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.12 They asked, 'Where is he?' He answered, 'I don't know.'
They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.14 It had been a Sabbath day when Jesus made the paste and opened the man's eyes,
Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.15 so when the Pharisees asked him how he had gained his sight, he said, 'He put a paste on my eyes, and I washed, and I can see.'
Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.16 Then some of the Pharisees said, 'That man cannot be from God: he does not keep the Sabbath.'Others said, 'How can a sinner produce signs like this?' And there was division among them.
They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.17 So they spoke to the blind man again, 'What have you to say about him yourself, now that he hasopened your eyes?' The man answered, 'He is a prophet.'
But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.18 However, the Jews would not believe that the man had been blind without first sending for the parentsof the man who had gained his sight and
And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?19 asking them, 'Is this man really the son of yours who you say was born blind? If so, how is it that he isnow able to see?'
His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:20 His parents answered, 'We know he is our son and we know he was born blind,
But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.21 but how he can see, we don't know, nor who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is old enough: let himspeak for himself.'
These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.22 His parents spoke like this out of fear of the Jews, who had already agreed to ban from the synagogueanyone who should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ.
Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.23 This was why his parents said, 'He is old enough; ask him.'
Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.24 So the Jews sent for the man again and said to him, 'Give glory to God! We are satisfied that this manis a sinner.'
He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.25 The man answered, 'Whether he is a sinner I don't know; al I know is that I was blind and now I cansee.'
Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?26 They said to him, 'What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?'
He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?27 He replied, 'I have told you once and you wouldn't listen. Why do you want to hear it all again? Do youwant to become his disciples yourselves?'
Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.28 At this they hurled abuse at him, 'It is you who are his disciple, we are disciples of Moses:
We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.29 we know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this man, we don't know where he comes from.'
The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.30 The man replied, 'That is just what is so amazing! You don't know where he comes from and he hasopened my eyes!
Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.31 We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but God does listen to people who are devout and do hiswil .
Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.32 Ever since the world began it is unheard of for anyone to open the eyes of someone born blind;
If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.33 if this man were not from God, he wouldn't have been able to do anything.'
They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.34 They retorted, 'Are you trying to teach us, and you a sinner through and through ever since you wereborn!' And they ejected him.
Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?35 Jesus heard they had ejected him, and when he found him he said to him, 'Do you believe in the Sonof man?'
He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?36 'Sir,' the man replied, 'tel me who he is so that I may believe in him.'
And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.37 Jesus said, 'You have seen him; he is speaking to you.'
And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.38 The man said, 'Lord, I believe,' and worshipped him.
And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.39 Jesus said: It is for judgement that I have come into this world, so that those without sight may see andthose with sight may become blind.
And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?40 Hearing this, some Pharisees who were present said to him, 'So we are blind, are we?'
Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.41 Jesus replied: If you were blind, you would not be guilty, but since you say, 'We can see,' your guiltremains.
