KING JAMES BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.1 and Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.2 At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as al the people came to him, he sat down andbegan to teach them.
And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,3 The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; andmaking her stand there in the middle
They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.4 they said to Jesus, 'Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery,
Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?5 and in the Law Moses has ordered us to stone women of this kind. What have you got to say?'
This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.6 They asked him this as a test, looking for an accusation to use against him. But Jesus bent down andstarted writing on the ground with his finger.
So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.7 As they persisted with their question, he straightened up and said, 'Let the one among you who isguiltless be the first to throw a stone at her.'
And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.8 Then he bent down and continued writing on the ground.
And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.9 When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until the last one had goneand Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained in the middle.
When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?10 Jesus again straightened up and said, 'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?'
She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.11 'No one, sir,' she replied. 'Neither do I condemn you,' said Jesus. 'Go away, and from this moment sinno more.'
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.12 When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said: I am the light of the world; anyone who fol ows me wilnot be walking in the dark, but wil have the light of life.
The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.13 At this the Pharisees said to him, 'You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not true.'
Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.14 Jesus replied: Even though I am testifying on my own behalf, my testimony is stil true, because I knowwhere I have come from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.15 You judge by human standards; I judge no one,
And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.16 but if I judge, my judgement will be true, because I am not alone: the one who sent me is with me;
It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.17 and in your Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.
I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.18 I testify on my own behalf, but the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf, too.
Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.19 They asked him, 'Where is your Father then?' Jesus answered: You do not know me, nor do you knowmy Father; if you did know me, you would know my Father as wel .
These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.20 He spoke these words in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple. No one arrested him, becausehis hour had not yet come.
Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.21 Again he said to them: I am going away; you will look for me and you wil die in your sin. Where I amgoing, you cannot come.
Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.22 So the Jews said to one another, 'Is he going to kil himself, that he says, "Where I am going, youcannot come?" '
And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.23 Jesus went on: You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.24 I have told you already: You wil die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am He, you wil die inyour sins.
Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.25 So they said to him, 'Who are you?' Jesus answered: What I have told you from the outset.
I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.26 About you I have much to say and much to judge; but the one who sent me is true, and what I declareto the world I have learnt from him.
They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.27 They did not recognise that he was talking to them about the Father.
Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.28 So Jesus said: When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you wil know that I am He and that I donothing of my own accord. What I say is what the Father has taught me;
And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.29 he who sent me is with me, and has not left me to myself, for I always do what pleases him.
As he spake these words, many believed on him.30 As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;31 To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said: If you make my word your home you wil indeed be mydisciples;
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.32 you wil come to know the truth, and the truth wil set you free.
They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?33 They answered, 'We are descended from Abraham and we have never been the slaves of anyone;what do you mean, "You wil be set free?" '
Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.34 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave.
And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.35 Now a slave has no permanent standing in the household, but a son belongs to it for ever.
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.36 So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.
I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.37 I know that you are descended from Abraham; but you want to kil me because my word finds no placein you.
I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.38 What I speak of is what I have seen at my Father's side, and you too put into action the lessons youhave learnt from your father.
They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.39 They repeated, 'Our father is Abraham.' Jesus said to them: If you are Abraham's children, do asAbraham did.
But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.40 As it is, you want to kill me, a man who has told you the truth as I have learnt it from God; that is notwhat Abraham did.
Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.41 You are doing your father's work. They replied, 'We were not born illegitimate, the only father we haveis God.'
Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.42 Jesus answered: If God were your father, you would love me, since I have my origin in God and havecome from him; I did not come of my own accord, but he sent me.
Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.43 Why do you not understand what I say? Because you cannot bear to listen to my words.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.44 You are from your father, the devil, and you prefer to do what your father wants. He was a murdererfrom the start; he was never grounded in the truth; there is no truth in him at all. When he lies he is speaking trueto his nature, because he is a liar, and the father of lies.
And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.45 But it is because I speak the truth that you do not believe me.
Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?46 Can any of you convict me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?
He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.47 Whoever comes from God listens to the words of God; the reason why you do not listen is that you arenot from God.
Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?48 The Jews replied, 'Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and possessed by a devil?'Jesus answered:
Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.49 I am not possessed; but I honour my Father, and you deny me honour.
And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.50 I do not seek my own glory; there is someone who does seek it and is the judge of it.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.51 In al truth I tel you, whoever keeps my word wil never see death.
Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.52 The Jews said, 'Now we know that you are possessed. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead, and yet you say, "Whoever keeps my word wil never know the taste of death."
Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who are youclaiming to be?'
Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:54 Jesus answered: If I were to seek my own glory my glory would be worth nothing; in fact, my glory isconferred by the Father, by the one of whom you say, 'He is our God,'
Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.55 although you do not know him. But I know him, and if I were to say, 'I do not know him,' I should be aliar, as you yourselves are. But I do know him, and I keep his word.
Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to think that he would see my Day; he saw it and was glad.
Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?57 The Jews then said, 'You are not fifty yet, and you have seen Abraham!'
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.58 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I am.
Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.59 At this they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.
