1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:	1 Il y avait chez les Pharisiens un homme nommé Nicodème, c’était un chef des Juifs.
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.	2 Il vint de nuit trouver Jésus et lui dit: "Maître, nous savons que tu es venu de Dieu pour enseigner, car personne ne peut faire des signes comme ceux que tu fais si Dieu n’est pas avec lui.”
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.	3 Jésus lui fit cette déclaration: "En vérité, en vérité, je te le dis: celui qui n’est pas né d’en haut ne peut pas voir le Royaume de Dieu.”
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?	4 Nicodème lui répondit: "Quand l’homme est vieux, peut-il renaître? Qui retournera au sein de sa mère pour naître une seconde fois?”
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.	5 Jésus dit alors: "En vérité, en vérité, je te le dis: si l’on n’est pas né de l’eau et de l’Esprit, on ne peut pas entrer dans le Royaume de Dieu.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.	6 Ce qui est né de la chair est chair, ce qui est né de l’Esprit est esprit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.	7 “Ne t’étonne pas si je te dis que vous devez naître d’en-haut.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.	8 Le vent souffle où il veut et tu entends sa voix, mais tu ne sais pas d’où il vient ni où il va: c’est la même chose pour celui qui est né de l’Esprit.”
9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?	9 Nicodème lui dit: "Comment cela est-il possible?”
10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?	10 Jésus répliqua: "Tu es maître en Israël et tu ne sais pas cela!”
11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.	11 “En vérité, en vérité, je te le dis: nous savons ce que nous disons et nous sommes témoins parce que nous avons vu; mais vous ne recevez pas notre témoignage.
12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?	12 Si vous ne me croyez pas quand je vous parle de choses de la terre, comment croirez-vous lorsque je parlerai des choses du ciel?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.	13 Mais personne n’est monté au ciel si ce n’est le Fils de l’Homme qui, lui, est descendu du ciel.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:	14 “Rappelez-vous le serpent que Moïse a fait lever dans le désert; il faut que le Fils de l’Homme soit élevé de la même manière,
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.	15 et alors quiconque croira en lui aura la vie éternelle.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.	16 Oui, comme Dieu a aimé le monde! Il a donné le Fils unique pour que celui qui croit en lui ait la vie éternelle et n’aille pas à sa perte.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.	17 “Dieu a envoyé le Fils dans le monde, non pas pour juger le monde, mais pour que le monde soit sauvé grâce à lui.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.	18 Pour celui qui croit en lui, il n’y a pas de jugement. Par contre, celui qui refuse de croire s’est déjà condamné, puisqu’il n’a pas cru dans le Nom du Fils unique de Dieu.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.	19 “Le jugement, c’est cela même: la lumière est venue dans le monde et les hommes ont choisi les ténèbres plutôt que la lumière, car ils faisaient le mal.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.	20 Celui qui fait le mal n’aime pas la lumière, et il ne vient pas à la lumière, car alors il deviendrait clair que ses œuvres sont mauvaises.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.	21 Au contraire, celui qui fait la vérité vient à la lumière, pour qu’on voie clairement que toutes ses œuvres ont été faites en Dieu.”
22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.	22 Après cela Jésus alla avec ses disciples à la province de Judée. Il y resta avec eux un certain temps et se mit à baptiser.
23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.	23 Jean aussi baptisait à Énon près de Salim, parce que l’eau y était profonde; on y venait pour se faire baptiser.
24 For John was not yet cast into prison.	24 C’était avant que Jean ne soit mis en prison.
25 Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.	25 Un jour les disciples de Jean eurent une discussion avec un Juif sur la façon de se purifier.
26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.	26 Ils vinrent trouver Jean et lui dirent: "Maître, celui qui était avec toi de l’autre côté du Jourdain, celui dont tu as fait l’éloge, il s’est mis à baptiser et tout le monde court vers lui!”
27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.	27 Alors Jean leur répond: "Personne ne peut s’attribuer plus que le Ciel ne veut lui donner.
28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.	28 Je ne suis pas le Messie, mais celui qui a été envoyé devant lui: je l’ai dit et vous êtes mes témoins.
29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.	29 L’épouse est pour l’époux; l’ami de l’époux se tient près de lui et fait ce qu’il lui dit. Et toute sa joie est d’entendre la voix de l’époux. Voilà pourquoi je suis pleinement heureux.
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.	30 Lui doit grandir, et je dois diminuer.
31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.	31 “Celui qui vient d’en-haut est au-dessus de tous. Celui qui vient de la terre sera toujours de la terre, et ce qu’il dit vient de la terre. Celui qui vient d’en-haut
32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.	32 a beau parler de ce qu’il a vu et entendu, personne ne tient compte de son témoignage.
33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.	33 Pourtant, recevoir son témoignage, c’est reconnaître que Dieu est fidèle à lui-même.
34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.	34 “Celui que Dieu a envoyé dit les paroles de Dieu, et il donne l’Esprit sans mesure,
35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.	35 car le Père aime le Fils, il a tout mis dans ses mains.
36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.	36 Celui qui refuse de croire dans le Fils ne connaîtra pas la vie: il devra passer par un jugement.”
