1 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.	1 Quando ebbe finito tutti questi suoi discorsi al popolo che era in ascolto, entrò in Cafarnao.
2 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.	2 Ora, un centurione aveva un servo, a cui teneva molto, ammalato e presso a morire.
3 And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.	3 E, sentito di Gesù, gli mandò alcuni anziani dei Giudei per domandargli di venire a salvare il suo servo.
4 And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:	4 Arrivati presso Gesù, lo supplicarono istantemente dicendo: «Egli merita che tu gli faccia questo;
5 For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.	5 ama, infatti, la nostra gente, ed è lui che ci ha costruita la sinagoga».
6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:	6 Gesù andò con loro. Era ormai non lontano dalla casa, quando il centurione gli mandò incontro degli amici per dirgli: «Signore, non ti incomodare, perché io non son degno che tu entri sotto il mio tetto,
7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.	7 perciò neppure ho stimato conveniente di venire da te, ma di’ una parola e il mio servo sarà guarito.
8 For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.	8 Poiché anch’io, benché sia un subalterno, ho sotto di me dei soldati, e dico ad uno: “Va’” ed egli va; e a un altro: “Vieni” e viene; e al mio servo: “Fa’ questo” e lo fa».
9 When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.	9 Nell’udire queste parole Gesù lo ammirò e, rivoltosi alla folla che lo seguiva, disse: «Vi dico: neppure in Israele ho trovato tanta fede».
10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.	10 E tornati alla casa, gli inviati trovarono il servo in perfetta salute.
11 And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.	11 E avvenne che, in seguito, Gesù si recò in una città chiamata Nain, e i suoi discepoli e una grande folla facevano la strada con lui.
12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.	12 Come si avvicinò alla porta della città, ecco che trasportavano un morto, figlio unico di sua madre, e questa era vedova; e C’era con lei molta gente ella città.
13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.	13 E il Signore, vedutala, ebbe pietà di lei e le disse:
14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.	14 «Non piangere più!» Poi, accostatosi, toccò la bara. i portatori si fermarono ed egli disse: «Giovinetto, a te dico: levati!»
15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.	15 E il morto si levò a sedere e cominciò a parlare. E Gesù lo rese alla madre.
16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.	16 Tutti furono presi da timore e glorificavano Dio dicendo: «Un gran profeta è sorto fra noi, e Dio ha visitato il suo popolo».
17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.	17 E questo che di lui si diceva si sparse per tutta la Giudea e per tutta la regione circostante.
18 And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.	18 Ora, i discepoli di Giovanni gli riferirono tutte queste cose. E chiamati due dei suoi discepoli, Giovanni
19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?	19 mandò a dire al Signore: «Sei tu colui che deve venire o dobbiamo aspettarne un altro?»
20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?	20 Arrivati presso di lui, quegli uomini dissero: «Giovanni il Battista ci manda a dirti: Sei tu colui che deve venire o dobbiamo aspettarne un altro?»
21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.	21 In quel momento Gesù curò molti da malattie, da infermità e da spiriti maligni, e a molti ciechi donò la vista.
22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.	22 E rispose loro: «Andate a riferire a Giovanni quel che avete veduto e udito: i ciechi riacquistano la vista, gli zoppi camminano, i lebbrosi sono mondati, i sordi odono, i morti risorgono, ai poveri è annunziata la buona novella:
23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.	23 e beato è colui per il quale io non sarò occasione di scandalo».
24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?	24 Quando gli inviati di Giovanni se ne furono andati, cominciò a dire alle folle, a proposito di Giovanni: «Che cosa siete andati a vedere nel deserto ? una canna agitata dal vento?
25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.	25 Ebbene, che cosa siete andati a vedere? un uomo avvolto in morbide vesti? Ecco, quelli che portano vestimenta sontuose e vivono in delizie stanno nelle regge.
26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.	26 Ebbene, che cosa siete andati a vedere? un profeta? Sì, vi dico, e più che un profeta.
27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.	27 È colui di cui fu scritto: Ecco, mando il mio messaggero dinanzi a te, per prepararti dinanzi la via.
28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.	28 Vi dico, infatti, che tra i nati di donna non ce n’è più grande di Giovanni: ma il più piccolo nel regno di Dio è più grande di lui.
29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.	29 È tutto il popolo che lo ha ascoltato, anche i pubblicani, hanno reso giustizia a Dio facendosi battezzare col battesimo di Giovanni;
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.	30 i farisei, invece, e i dottori della legge hanno reso vano il disegno di Dio a loro riguardo, non facendosi battezzare da lui.
31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?	31 A chi, dunque, posso paragonare gli uomini di questa generazione, e a chi somigliano?
32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.	32 Assomigliano ai fanciulli che stanno nelle piazze e si dan la voce gli uni agli altri dicendo: Vi suonammo il flauto e non avete ballato; abbiamo intonato lamenti e non avete pianto.
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.	33 È venuto, infatti, Giovanni il Battista che non mangia pane né beve vino e dite: “È indemoniato”.
34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!	34 È venuto il Figlio dell’uomo che mangia e beve e dite: “Ecco un mangione e un beone, amico di pubblicani e di peccatori”.
35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.	35 Ma è stata fatta giustizia alla Sapienza da tutti i suoi figli».
36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.	36 Un fariseo lo invitò a pranzo da lui; egli entrò nella casa del fariseo e si adagiò a mensa.
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,	37 Ed ecco una donna, una peccatrice della città, avendo appreso che egli era a tavola nella casa del fariseo, portò un vaso di alabastro pieno di unguento
38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.	38 e, fermatasi alle spalle presso i piedi di lui, piangendo, con le lacrime cominciò a bagnargli i piedi e li asciugava con i capelli del suo capo, e gli copriva di baci i piedi e li ungeva con l’unguento.
39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.	39 A tal vista, però, il fariseo che l’aveva invitato disse fra sé: «Costui, se fosse profeta, saprebbe chi è, e di che genere è la donna che lo tocca: una peccatrice!»
40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.	40 E Gesù, prendendo la parola, gli disse: «Simone, ho una cosa da dirti». E quegli: «Maestro, di’». Dice:
41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.	41 «Un creditore aveva due debitori: uno gli doveva cinquecento denari, l’altro cinquanta.
42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?	42 Non avendo essi da pagare, condonò il debito ad ambedue. Chi, dunque, di essi lo amerà di più?»
43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.	43 Simone rispose: «Colui al quale condonò di più, suppongo». Gli disse: «Hai ben giudicato!»
44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.	44 E, rivolto alla donna, disse a Simone: «Vedi questa donna? Sono entrato in casa tua: non mi hai versato acqua sui piedi; essa, invece, mi ha bagnato i piedi con le sue lacrime e li ha asciugati con i suoi capelli.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.	45 Non mi hai dato un bacio; essa, invece, da che sono entrato non ha smesso di coprirmi i piedi di baci.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.	46 Non mi hai unto il capo con olio; costei, invece, mi unse i piedi con unguento.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.	47 Perciò, ti dico, i suoi peccati, i suoi molti peccati le sono perdonati perché ha dimostrato molto amore. Ma colui al quale si perdona poco dimostra poco amore».
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.	48 Poi disse alla donna: «Ti sono perdonati i peccati».
49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?	49 I commensali cominciavano a dire tra sé: «Chi è costui, che rimette perfino i peccati?»
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.	50 E Gesù disse alla donna: «La tua fede ti ha salvata: va’ in pace».
