1 For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.	1 Tutte queste cose ho io agitate nella mia mente, ed ho cercato di chiarirle: vi sono dei giusti e dei sapienti, e le loro opere sono nelle mani di Dio, eppure l'uomo non sa se sia degno di amore o di odio.
2 All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.	2 Tutto è incerto nel futuro, perchè tutto avviene ugualmente al giusto e all'empio, al buono e al cattivo, al puro e all'impuro, a chi immola vittime e a chi disprezza i sacrifizi; l'onesto e il peccatore, lo spergiuro e chi giura il vero (sono trattati ugualmente).
3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.	3 Questa è la cosa peggiore di quelle che avvengono sotto il sole: l'accadere a tutti le medesime cose; per questo i cuori degli uomini si riempiono di malizia, di disprezzo nel tempo della vita, e dopo sono precipitati nell'inferno.
4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.	4 Non v'è nessuno che possa viver sempre, e che ne abbia la speranza. E' meglio un cane vivo che un leone morto.
5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.	5 Infatti quelli che vivono sanno di dover morire; ma i morti non san più nulla, non han più nulla da guadagnare, ed anche il loro ricordo è messo in oblìo.
6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.	6 Anche il loro amore, odio, invidie son finiti con loro, non ne hanno più che fare con questo secolo e colle cose che si fanno sotto il sole.
7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.	7 Va dunque e mangia con gioia il tuo pane, e bevi con allegria il tuo vino, perchè ciò che fai piace a Dio.
8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.	8 In ogni tempo sian candide le tue vesti, e non manchi l'unguento al tuo capo.
9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.	9 Godi la vita colla tua moglie diletta, per tutto il tempo della tua vita fugace, per quei giorni che ti sono dati sotto il sole, per tutto il tempo della tua vanità: questa è la tua sorte nella vita e nelle tue fatiche che ti affannano sotto il sole.
10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.	10 Tutto quello che puoi fare coi tuoi mezzi, fallo presto, perchè nè attività, nè pensiero, nè sapienza, nè scienza ha luogo nella regione dei morti dove tu corri.
11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.	11 Mi volsi a considerare altre cose e vidi come sotto il sole la corsa non è dei veloci, nè la guerra dei forti, nè il pane dei sapienti, nè le ricchezze dei dotti, nè il favore degli artisti, ma che in tutto domina il tempo e il caso.
12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.	12 L'uomo non conosce il suo fine, e come i pesci son presi all'amo e gli uccelli al laccio, così son presi gli uomini dal tempo cattivo, quando all'improvviso piomba loro addosso.
13 This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:	13 Vidi ancora sotto il sole della sapienza che io stimo grandissima:
14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:	14 v'era una piccola città con poca popolazione; andò contro di essa un gran re e l'assediò, costruì dei forti all'intorno, e l'assedio fu completo.
15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.	15 Or in essa si trovò un uomo povero, ma saggio, il quale liberò la città col suo sapere: e nessuno poi si ricordò di quel povero uomo.
16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.	16 Ma io concludevo che la sapienza vai più della fortezza. E come mai la sapienza del povero è disprezzata, e non sono ascoltate le sue parole?
17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.	17 Le parole del sapiente si ascoltano in silenzio più che le grida di uno che regna tra gli stolti.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.	18 La sapienza vai più delle armi da guerra, e chi sbaglia in una sola cosa perderà molti beni.
