1 For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.	1 - Tutte queste cose riandai in cuor mio, per intenderle accuratamente: c'è i giusti e i saggi, e le opere loro sono in mano di Dio, eppur non sa l'uomo s'è degno d'amore e d'odio.
2 All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.	2 Ma tutto è riservato nella sua incertezza al futuro; perchè tutto accade a un modo per il giusto e per l'empio, per il buono e per il malvagio, per il puro e l'impuro, per chi soffre sacrifizi e chi li disprezza: come [è trattato] il buono, così il peccatore, come lo spergiuro, così chi giura il vero.
3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.	3 Quest'è il più gran male di quanto accade sotto il sole: che la stessa sorte tocca a tutti! Onde il cuor de' figliuoli degli uomini è pieno di malvagitàe di [folle] spregio durante la lor vita; e dopo se ne scendono tra i morti.
4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.	4 Ma per chi è nel numero de' viventi c'è sempre una speranza; meglio è un cane vivo che un leone morto!
5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.	5 I vivi infatti sanno di dover morire, ma i morti non sanno più nulla, e nulla più han da sperare, perchè caduta in oblio è la loro memoria.
6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.	6 Anche l'amore e l'odioe l' invidia perirono insieme [con loro], e non avran più parte a questo secolo, e a quanto si fa sotto il sole.
7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.	7 Va' dunque e mangia allegramente il tuo pane, e bevi con gioia il tuo vino; poichè Dio ha gradito le tue opere.
8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.	8 Sian candide le tue vesti in ogni tempo, e l'unguento non manchi sul tuo capo.
9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.	9 Goditi la vita con la moglie che ami, tutti i giorni della tua vita caduca, che ti son concessi sotto il sole, per tutto il tempo della tua vanità: chè questa è la tua parte nella vitae nel lavoro con cui ti travagli sotto il sole.
10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.	10 Tutto quello che la tua mano può fare, fallo prontamente; poichè nè opera nè pensiero, nè scienza nè sapienzav'è giù nel mondo de' morti dove ten vai!
11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.	11 Mi volsi ad altro e vidi sotto il sole, come non appartiene agli agili la corsa, nè ai valorosi la guerra, nè ai savi il panenè agl'intelligenti la ricchezza, nè ai bravi il favore; ma il tempo e il caso [ci entran di mezzo] per tutti,
12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.	12 nè l'uomo conosce il suo destino. Come i pesci son presi all'amoe gli uccelli acchiappati al laccio, così gli uomini son colti nel tempo dell'avversità, che precipita loro addosso a un tratto.
13 This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:	13 Anche questa [prova di] sapienza vidi sotto il sole, e mi parve assai grande:
14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:	14 c'era una piccola città con pochi abitanti, e venne contr'essa un gran re e la circondò, e fabbricò grandi torri all'intorno, e l'assedio fu completo;
15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.	15 ma ci si trovava un uomo povero, ch'era saggio, il quale liberò la città con la sua sapienza. E[ppure] niuno si ricordò più tardi di quel pover uomo!
16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.	16 Ond'io dissi: «Meglio la sapienza che la forza. Come mai dunque la sapienza del povero è disprezzata, e alle sue parole non si dà retta?».
17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.	17 Le parole de' savi, [che] si ascoltano nella quiete, [valgon] più che le grida di un condottiero tra gli stolti.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.	18 Meglio la sapienza che le armi guerresche: chi invece falla, anche in una cosa sola, rovina gran bene.
