1 For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.	1 J’ai donc réfléchi à tout cela et j’ai vu clairement que les justes, les sages et leurs travaux, sont dans la main de Dieu. Lui, en veut-il? Ne veut-il pas? Les humains ne le savent pas: tout peut leur arriver.
2 All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.	2 Et c’est déroutant que tous aient le même sort: le juste et le méchant, l’homme pur et celui qui ne l’est pas, celui qui offre des sacrifices et celui qui n’en offre pas, celui qui s’engage par un vœu et celui qui craint de le faire.
3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.	3 Voilà où est le mal dans tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil: tous ont le même sort; voilà pourquoi les fils d’Adam ont plein d’idées méchantes, et leurs pensées déraillent tout au long de leur vie en attendant de terminer chez les morts.
4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.	4 Tant qu’on se voit parmi les vivants, on garde son assurance: “Chien vivant vaut mieux que lion mort.”
5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.	5 Les vivants savent qu’ils mourront; les morts, eux, ne savent rien. Ils n’ont plus rien à attendre: ils ne sont plus qu’un souvenir oublié.
6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.	6 Ils ont pu aimer, haïr, avoir des ambitions: tout s’est perdu et jamais plus ils ne prendront part à tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil.
7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.	7 Puisses-tu prendre plaisir au pain que tu manges et boire ton vin d’un cœur joyeux: ce sera un signe que Dieu est satisfait de ton travail.
8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.	8 Puisses-tu porter toujours des habits blancs, et n’être pas à court d’huile pour parfumer ta tête.
9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.	9 Jouis de la vie avec la femme que tu aimes, le temps que s’envolent les jours de ta vie. Car c’est là ta part en cette vie tout le temps que tu peines sous le soleil.
10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.	10 Tout ce qui sera à ta portée et que tu te sens capable de faire, fais-le; car au séjour des morts où tu t’en vas, il n’y a ni travaux, ni problèmes, ni connaissance, ni sagesse.
11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.	11 J’ai vu encore ceci sous le soleil: le plus rapide n’est pas sûr de gagner la course, ni le plus courageux de gagner la bataille; le pain n’est pas assuré pour les sages, ni la richesse pour les intelligents, ni la meilleure place pour celui qui sait y faire. Car pour tous il y a l’occasion et il y a la malchance.
12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.	12 Personne ne sait quand viendra son heure: les fils d’Adam se voient surpris par le malheur comme le poisson pris dans la nasse, comme l’oiseau sur qui se referme le piège.
13 This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:	13 Parlons de sagesse: voici ce que j’ai vu sous le soleil, et qui ne m’a pas paru une petite chose.
14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:	14 Il y avait une ville petite, avec peu d’habitants. Un grand roi se présente et l’assiège avec murs et fossés.
15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.	15 Dans la ville, pourtant, il y a un homme plein d’astuce, un homme tout ordinaire, et grâce à son astuce la ville est sauvée. Mais c’était un homme tout ordinaire, et personne n’a plus pensé à lui.
16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.	16 Alors, moi je dis: la sagesse passe avant les exploits, mais quand il s’agit des pauvres, on méprise leur sagesse: ils peuvent parler, on ne les écoute pas.
17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.	17 Les paroles des sages, dites dans le calme, font plus d’effet que le tapage d’un chef d’écervelés.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.	18 La sagesse a plus de pouvoir que les armes: une seule personne qui s’en moque détruit beaucoup de bonnes choses.
