1 For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.	1 Sí, yo me puse a pensar en todo esto y vi que los justos, los sabios y sus acciones están en la mano de Dios. Pero el hombre ni siquiera sabe si es objeto de amor o de aversión. Todo lo que está ante él es vanidad,
2 All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.	2 porque a todos les espera la misma suerte: al justo y al impío, al bueno y al malo, al puro y al impuro, al que ofrece sacrificios y al que no los ofrece; lo mismo le pasa al bueno y al pecador, al que jura y al que teme hacer un juramento.
3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.	3 Esto es lo malo en todo lo que sucede bajo el sol: como es igual la suerte de todos, el corazón de los hombres se llena de maldad, la locura está dentro de ellos mientras viven, y después, acaban entre los muertos.
4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.	4 Mientras uno está unido a todos los vivientes, siempre hay esperanza, porque «más vale perro vivo que león muerto».
5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.	5 Los vivos, en efecto, saben que morirán, pero los muertos no saben nada: para ellos ya no hay retribución, porque su recuerdo cayó en el olvido.
6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.	6 Se han esfumado sus amores, sus odios y sus rivalidades, y nunca más podrán compartir todo lo que se hace bajo el sol.
7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.	7 Ve, entonces, come tu pan con alegría y bebe tranquilamente tu vino, porque a Dios ya le agradaron tus obras.
8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.	8 Que tu ropa sea siempre blanca y nunca falte el perfume en tu cabeza.
9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.	9 Goza de la vida con la mujer que amas, mientras dure esa vana existencia que Dios te concede bajo el sol, porque esa es tu parte en la vida y en el esfuerzo que realizas bajo el sol.
10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.	10 Todo lo que esté al alcance de tu mano realízalo con tus propias fuerzas, porque no hay obra, ni proyecto, ni ciencia, ni sabiduría, en el Abismo adonde tú irás.
11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.	11 Además, yo vi otra cosa bajo el sol: la carrera no la gana el más veloz, ni el más fuerte triunfa en el combate; el pan no pertenece al más sabio, ni la riqueza al más inteligente, ni es favorecido el más capaz, porque en todo interviene el tiempo y el azar.
12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.	12 El hombre no sabe cuándo llega su hora: como los peces atrapados en la red fatal, como los pájaros aprisionados por el lazo, así los hombres se ven sorprendidos por la adversidad cuando cae de improviso sobre ellos.
13 This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:	13 También he visto bajo el sol un caso de sabiduría que considero realmente notable
14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:	14 Había una pequeña ciudad, con pocos habitantes; un gran rey la atacó, la cercó, y construyó contra ella grandes empalizadas.
15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.	15 Allí se encontraba un hombre pobre pero sabio, que salvó la ciudad con su sabiduría. A pesar de eso, nadie se acordó más de ese pobre hombre.
16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.	16 Entonces pensé: «Más vale maña que fuerza». pero la sabiduría del pobre es despreciada y nadie escucha sus palabras.
17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.	17 Las palabras de los sabios oídas con calma valen más que los gritos del que gobierna a los necios.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.	18 Vale más la sabiduría que las máquinas de guerra, pero una sola falla malogra mucho bien.
