1 For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.	1 Tutte queste cose io disaminai nel mio cuore, affin di discernerle chiaramente. I giusti, e i sapienti, e le opere loro sono nella mano di Dio; eppur non sa l'uomo s'ei sia degno di amore, o di odio:
2 All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.	2 Ma tutto rimane nell'incertezza sino al tempo, che verrà; perocché tutto succede del pari al giusto, ed all'empio, al buono, ed al cattivo, al mondo, e all'immondo, a colui, che immola vittime, e a colui che disprezza i sacrifizj, come l'uomo retto cosi il peccatore, e come è trattato colui, che spergiura, cosi quegli che giura secondo la verità.
3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.	3 Questa è la cosa più dolorosa di quante ne avvengono sotto del sole l'esser tutti soggetti a' medesimi avvenimenti: per la qual cosa eziandio i cuori de' figliuoli degli uomini si riempiono di malizia, e di petulanza nel tempo di loro vita, e dì poi sono strascinati nell'interno.
4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.	4 Non v' ha chi viva per sempre o di tal cosa si lusinghi: un cane vivo val più, che un lion morto.
5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.	5 Perocché quelli, che vivono sanno d'avere; il morire: i morti poi non sanno più nulla, e non han più veruna mercede, e la loro memoria è stata messa in oblio;
6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.	6 l'amore, e l'odio, e le invidie son ancora unite insieme; ed ei non hanno parte a questo secolo, né a cosa che facciasi sotto del sole.
7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.	7 Va adunque, e mangia lietamente il tuo pane, e bevi con letizia il tuo vino, mentre le opere tue a Dio sono accette.
8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.	8 In ogni tempo sian candide le tue vesti, e non manchi unguento al tuo capo.
9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.	9 Goditi la vita colla tua cara moglie per tutti i giorni della istabil tua vita conceduti a te sotto del sole per tutto il tempo di tua vanità: perocché questa è la tua sorte mentre vivi, e pe' travagli, che sopporti quaggiù.
10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.	10 Tutto quello, che può operai la tua mano, fallo con sollecitudine; perocché né azione, né pensiero, né saggezza, né scienza ha luogo nel sepolcro, verso del quale tu corri.
11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.	11 Mi volsi ad altra parte, e osservai come sotto del sole né la corsa è serbata pei lesti di gamba, né la guerra pei valorosi, né il pane pei sapienti, né le ricchezze pei dotti, né il favore pei bravi artefici: ma l'occasione, ed il caso ha luogo in tutte le cose.
12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.	12 L'uomo non sa il suo fine, ma come i pesci son presi all'amo, e gli uccelli al laccio, così sono sorpresi gli uomini dal tempo cattivo, che lor sopraggiunge a un tratto.
13 This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:	13 Vidi ancora sotto del sole una sorta di saggezza, ch'io reputo grandissima:
14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:	14 Era una piccola città poco popolata: un re grande andò a campo sotto di lei, e aperse trinciera, e alzò de' fortini attorno, e strinse l'assedio.
15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.	15 E vi si trovò dentro un pover uomo, ma saggio, il quale col suo sapere liberò la città, ma nessuno di poi si ricordò di quel pover nomo.
16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.	16 Or io concludeva, che val più la sapienza, che la fortezza: ma come mai la saggezza di quel pover uomo fu disprezzata, e non fu tenuto conto di sue parole?
17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.	17 Le parole de' saggi si ascoltano in silenzio, più che le grida di uno che regna tra gli stolti.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.	18 Val più la sapienza, che le armi guerriere, e chi in una sola cosa difetta, perde molti vantaggi.
