KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?1 Why, LORD, do you stand at a distance and pay no heed to these troubled times?
The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.2 Arrogant scoundrels pursue the poor; they trap them by their cunning schemes.
For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth.3 The wicked even boast of their greed; these robbers curse and scorn the LORD.
The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.4 In their insolence the wicked boast: "God doesn't care, doesn't even exist."
His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them.5 Yet their affairs always succeed; they ignore your judgment on high; they sneer at all who oppose them.
He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity.6 They say in their hearts, "We will never fall; never will we see misfortune."
His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.7 Their mouths are full of oaths, violence, and lies; discord and evil are under their tongues.
He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor.8 They wait in ambush near towns; their eyes watch for the helpless. to murder the innocent in secret.
He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net.9 They lurk in ambush like lions in a thicket, hide there to trap the poor, snare them and close the net.
He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.10 The helpless are crushed, laid low; they fall into the power of the wicked,
He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it.11 Who say in their hearts, "God pays no attention, shows no concern, never bothers to look."
Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble.12 Rise up, LORD God! Raise your arm! Do not forget the poor!
Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it.13 Why should the wicked scorn God, say in their hearts, "God doesn't care"?
Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.14 But you do see; you do observe this misery and sorrow; you take the matter in hand. To you the helpless can entrust their cause; you are the defender of orphans.
Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till thou find none.15 Break the arms of the wicked and depraved; make them account for their crimes; let none of them survive.
The LORD is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land.16 The LORD is king forever; the nations have vanished from God's land.
LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:17 You listen, LORD, to the needs of the poor; you encourage them and hear their prayers.
To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.18 You win justice for the orphaned and oppressed; no one on earth will cause terror again.
