KING JAMES BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.	1 Los nombres de los israelitas que llegaron con Jacob a Egipto, cada uno con su familia, son los siguientes:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,	2 Rubén, Simeón, Leví y Judá,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,	3 Isacar, Zabulón y Benjamín,
4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.	4 Dan y Neftalí, Gad y Aser.
5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.	5 Los descendientes de Jacob eran, en total, setenta personas, José ya estaba en Egipto.
6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.	6 Después murieron José y sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación.
7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.	7 Pero los israelitas fueron fecundos y se multiplicaron, hasta convertirse en una muchedumbre numerosa y muy fuerte, que llenaba el país.
8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.	8 Mientras tanto, asumió el poder en Egipto un nuevo rey, que no había conocido a José.
9 And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:	9 El dijo a su pueblo: «El pueblo de los israelitas es más numeroso y fuerte que nosotros.
10 Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.	10 Es preciso tomar precauciones contra él, para impedir que siga multiplicándose. De lo contrario, en caso de guerra se pondrá de parte de nuestros enemigos, combatirá contra nosotros y se irá del país»
11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.	11 Entonces los egipcios pusieron a Israel a las órdenes de capataces, para que lo oprimieran con trabajos forzados. Así Israel construyó para el Faraón las ciudades de almacenamiento de Pitom y Ramsés.
12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.	12 Pero a medida que aumentaba la opresión, más se multiplicaba y más se expandía. Esto hizo que la presencia de los israelitas se convirtiera en un motivo de inquietud.
13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:	13 Por eso, los egipcios redujeron a los israelitas a la condición de los esclavos,
14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.	14 y les hicieron insoportable la vida, forzándolos a realizar trabajos extenuantes: la preparación de la arcilla, la fabricación de ladrillos y toda clase de tareas agrícolas.
15 And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:	15 Además, el rey de Egipto se dirigió a las parteras de las mujeres hebreas –una de ellas se llamaba Sifrá y la otra Puá–
16 And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.	16 y les ordenó: «Cuando asistan durante el parto a las mujeres hebreas, observen bien el sexo del recién nacido: si es varón, mátenlo, y si es una niña, déjenla vivir».
17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.	17 Pero las parteras tuvieron temor de Dios, y en lugar de acatar la orden que les había dado el rey de Egipto, dejaban con vida a los varones.
18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?	18 El rey las mandó llamar y les preguntó: «Por qué han obrado así y han dejado con vida a los varones?».
19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.	19 Ellas le respondieron: «Por que las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias: tienen mucha vitalidad, y antes que llegue la partera, ya han dado a luz».
20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.	20 Por eso Dios fue bondadoso con las parteras. El pueblo creció cada vez más y se hizo muy poderoso,
21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.	21 y como ellas habían obrado con temor de Dios, él les concedió una familia numerosa.
22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.	22 Entonces el Faraón dio esta orden a su pueblo: «Arrojen al Nilo a todos los varones recién nacidos, pero dejen con vida a las niñas».
